Anisotropy characterization of upper shanghai clays: Shear strength and small-strain stiffness

Comprehensive investigations have been conducted to study the structure and overconsolidation of upper Shanghai clays, i.e. Layers 2–6 clays, typically located at depths of 30–40 m. However, limited information is available on their anisotropy, and even less is known about the correlation between structure, overconsolidation, and anisotropy. In this study, the undrained anisotropy characteristics of shear strength and small-strain shear stiffness in upper Shanghai Layers 2–6 clays were thoroughly assessed using a series of K0-consolidated undrained triaxial compression (TC) and triaxial extension (TE) tests (K0 is the coefficient of lateral earth pressure at rest). The effective stress paths, shear strength, and small-strain shear stiffness from the undrained TC and TE tests demonstrate the anisotropic behaviors in upper Shanghai clays. Analyses of data from upper Shanghai clays and other clays worldwide indicate that the shear strength anisotropy ratio (Ks) converges at 0.8 as the overconsolidation ratio (OCR) and plasticity index (Ip) increase, while the small-strain shear stiffness anisotropy ratio (Re) converges at 1.0. The influence of OCR on Ks and Re is more pronounced than that of Ip and sensitivity (St). Nevertheless, no clear correlation between Ks and Re is observed in upper Shanghai clays.

The alpine ecosystem has great potential for carbon *** organic carbon(SOC)and total nitrogen(TN)are highly sensitive to climate change,and their dynamics are crucial to revealing the effect of climate change on the structure,function,and services of the ***,the spatial distribution and controlling factors of SOC and TN across various soil layers and vegetation types within this unique ecosystem remain inadequately *** this study,256 soil samples in 89 sites were collected from the Three River Headwaters Region(TRHR)in China to investigate SOC and TN and to explore the primary factors affecting their distribution,including soil,vegetation,climate,and geography *** results show that SOC and TN contents in 0-20,20-40,40-60,and 60-80 cm soil layers are 24.40,18.03,14.04,12.40 g/kg and 2.46,1.90,1.51,1.17 g/kg,respectively;with higher concentrations observed in the southeastern region compared to the northwest of the ***-way analysis of variance reveals that SOC and TN levels are elevated in the alpine meadow and the alpine shrub relative to the alpine steppe in the 0-60 cm soil *** structural equation model explores that soil water content is the main controlling factor affecting the variation of SOC and ***,the geography,climate,and vegetation factors notably indirectly affect SOC and TN through soil ***,it can effectively improve soil water and nutrient conditions through vegetation restoration,soil improvement,and grazing management,and the change of SOC and TN can be fully understood by establishing monitoring networks to better protect soil carbon and nitrogen.

Dynamic Collaborative Data Download in Heterogeneous Satellite Networks

Low-earth-orbit(LEO)satellite network has become a critical component of the satelliteterrestrial integrated network(STIN)due to its superior signal quality and minimal communication ***,the highly dynamic nature of LEO satellites leads to limited and rapidly varying contact time between them and Earth stations(ESs),making it difficult to timely download massive communication and remote sensing data within the limited time *** address this challenge in heterogeneous satellite networks with coexisting geostationary-earth-orbit(GEO)and LEO satellites,this paper proposes a dynamic collaborative inter-satellite data download strategy to optimize the long-term weighted energy consumption and data downloads within the constraints of on-board power,backlog stability and time-varying ***,the Lyapunov optimization theory is applied to transform the long-term stochastic optimization problem,subject to time-varying contact time and on-board power constraints,into multiple deterministic single time slot problems,based on which online distributed algorithms are developed to enable each satellite to independently obtain the transmit power allocation and data processing decisions in ***,the simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed scheme over benchmarks,e.g.,achieving asymptotic optimality of the weighted energy consumption and data downloads,while maintaining stability of the on-board backlog.

Investigations of liquid-liquid transitions in metallic melts by fast differential scanning calorimetry

Liquid-liquid transition in metallic melts is an intriguing phenomenon often confused with liquid-liquid separation, oxidation or precipitation. Here, we employ a state-of-the-art ultrafast chip-based differential scanning calorimeter to investigate the thermal behavior of six metallic melts, ranging from unary to quinary systems, at temperatures above their liquidus. Calorimetric signals of liquid-liquid transition vary across systems: Sn melts showed no direct endothermic or exothermic events, though liquid-liquid transition influenced solidification and melting temperatures, while Yb-Zn melts exhibited an exothermic peak during cooling,indicating liquid-liquid transition. Thermal signals in other systems including Li, Pd-Ni-P, Yb-Mg-Zn-Cu and Au-Ag-Pd-Cu-Si,are primarily driven by compositional changes. Our in-situ analysis provides new insights into the structural and compositional evolution of metallic melts, offering significant implications for the design and processing of novel materials.

Impacts of Land–Atmosphere Coupling on Summer Extreme Hot-Humid Compound Events over Southern Eurasia under Different Sea Surface Temperature Backgrounds

Land-atmosphere coupling and sea surface temperature(SST) anomalies both have essential impacts on weather and climate extremes. Based on the ERA5 reanalysis dataset and the CESM1.2.2 model, this study investigates the influence of land-atmosphere coupling on summer extreme hot-humid events(EHHE) over southern Eurasia under different SST backgrounds. The results suggest that coupling causes near-surface air temperature increases that exceed 0.5℃. From 1961 to 2020, the frequency of EHHE has continuously increased, and is closely related to soil moisture anomalies in the northern Indian Peninsula(IDP) and the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River(YRB). Numerical simulations further demonstrate that land-atmosphere coupling raises the risk of EHHE by 25.4%. In a typical El Ni?o SST background state, intensified land-atmosphere coupling tends to produce notable increases in the frequency of EHHE. The dominant processes that land-atmosphere coupling affects the EHHE variations are evidently different between these two *** surface thermal anomalies predominate in the IDP, while moisture conditions are more critical in the YRB. When warm SST anomalies exist, dry soil anomalies in the IDP are prominent, and evaporation is constrained, increasing sensible heat flux. Positive geopotential height anomalies are significant, combined with adiabatic warming induced by descending motion and a noticeable warm center in the near-surface atmosphere. The southward shift of the westerly jet enhances divergence over YRB. The anticyclonic circulation anomalies over the western Pacific are conducive to guiding moisture transport to the YRB, providing a favorable circulation background for the development of summer EHHE.

With the wide application of electromagnetic wave,a high performance electromagnetic shielding material is urgently needed to solve the harm caused by electromagnetic *** cross-linking strategy is adopted in this ***(PAM)was synthesized by in-situ polymerization of acrylamide(AM)*** obtained PAM was blended with polyethylene glycol(PEG)to prepare PAM/PEG hydrogels and form rigid support ***,the modified carbon nanotubes(S-CNTs)were incorpor-ated into sodium alginate(SA)and PAM/***,Na+was used to trigger SA self-assembly,which significantly improved the mechanical properties and electrical conductivity of the hydrogels,and prepared PAM/PEG/SA/S-CNTs-Na hydrogels with high tough-ness and strong electromagnetic interference(EMI)shielding efficiency(SE).The results showed that the compressive strength of PAM/PEG/SA/S-CNTs-Na hydrogel was 19.05 MPa,which was 7.69%higher than that of PAM/PEG hydrogel(17.69 MPa).More en-couraging,the average EMI SE of PAM/PEG/SA/S-CNTs-Na hydrogels at a thickness of only 3 mm and a CNTs content of 16.53wt%was 32.92 dB,which is 113.21%higher than that of PAM/PEG hydrogels(15.44 dB).
