Experimental validation of adsorption filter model under dynamic VOC concentrations:Prediction of long-term efficiency

Indoor volatile organic compound(VOC)concentrations are often dynamic because the ventilation and emission rates of VOC usually *** filters used for air purification may operate with a capacity that fluctuates with unsteady VOC concentrations in *** the dynamic interactions between adsorption filters and indoor air is crucial for predicting their performance under real-world *** study presents a numerical model of partially reversible adsorption equilibrium coupled with a mass transfer model to create a predictive model for adsorption efficiency in environments with dynamic VOC concentrations.A honeycomb adsorption filter for benzene adsorption was simulated and tested,including the breakthrough and purging curve and the long-term efficiency in an experimental chamber with dynamic *** results reveal that the curve generated with the partially reversible adsorption equilibrium model closely aligns with the measured ***,the model was coupled with a chamber model and the simulation results were compared with those calculated using the filter model with a single adsorption *** VOCs were emitted intermittently in the chamber and there was sufficient ventilation,the concentration peaks in the chamber derived from the models with different assumptions on adsorption reversibility were significantly different from each ***,it was observed that the reversible adsorption capacity of the filter was crucial for long-term operation in rooms with dynamic *** the reversible adsorption capacity constituting only 6.7%of the total adsorption capacity of the tested filter,it contributes to a significant“peak shaving and valley filling”effect,even when the irreversible adsorption capacity is *** adsorption reversibility should be taken as an important parameter for selecting adsorbents for dynamic concentration conditions.

Cerium oxide inclusion nucleation mechanism based on classical nucleation theory and two-step nucleation

It is challenging to assess the mechanism responsible for the nucleation of inclusions in metals at high *** present work therefore systematically investigates the nucleation of cerium oxide inclusions according to classical nucleation theory and a two-step nucleation *** nucleation rates and nucleation radii of these inclusions are obtained,and the results demonstrate a considerable difference between theoretical and experimental *** the basis of a two-step nucleation mechanism,(CeO_(2))_(n) and(Ce_(2)O_(3))_(n)(n=1-6)clusters were constructed and the thermodynamic properties of both these clusters and of cerium oxide nanoparticles were *** addition,the entropies and heat capacity changes of cerium oxides were determined using first principles calculations and are found to be consistent with literature *** present data indicate that the cerium oxide inclusion nucleation pathway can be summarized as[Ce]+[O]→(CeO_(2))n/(Ce_(2)O_(3))_(n)→(Ce_(2)O_(3))_(n)→(Ce_(2)O_(3))_(2)→core(Ce_(2)O_(3)crystal)-shell((Ce_(2)O_(3))_(2) cluster)nanoparticles→(Ce_(2)O_(3))bulk.

Migration and distribution characteristics of soil heavy metal(loid)s at a lead smelting site

Heavy metal(loid)s contamination is a constant issue at smelting *** is essential to investigate the spatial distribution and migration characteristics of heavy metal(loid)s in the soil for environmental management and remediation strategies of non-ferrous smelting *** this study,203 soil samples from 57 sites were collected in a typical lead smelting *** findings demonstrated that there were significant Pb,Zn,Cd,and As contamination in soil *** spatial distribution of heavy metal(loid)s showed strong spatial heterogeneity,the contaminated soil areas of Pb,As,Cd,and Zn were 99.5%,98.9%,85.3%,and 72.4%,***,Cd,and As contamination of the soil reached a depth of 5 m,which migrated from the surface to deep soil *** leaching contents of Zn,Pb,and As decreased obviously in 3-4 m soil layer,but the leaching content of Cd was still high,which indicated the high migration of *** the increase of depth,the proportion of acid soluble fraction of heavy metal(loid)s decreased,and the residual fraction *** acid soluble fraction of Cd accounted for a higher proportion,and As mainly existed in reducible and residual fractions in *** to the calculation of the migration factor,the migration of heavy metal(loid)s in soils were ordered as Cd>Zn>Pb>*** outcomes are advantageous for risk reduction and site remediation for non-ferrous metal smelting sites.

Exploring the mechanisms of calcium carbonate deposition on various substrates with implications for effective anti-scaling material selection

The unexpected scaling phenomena have resulted in significant damages to the oil and gas industries,leading to issues such as heat exchanger failures and pipeline clogging. It is of practical and fundamental importance to understand the scaling mechanisms and develop efficient anti-scaling strategies. However,the underlying surface interaction mechanisms of scalants(e.g., calcite) with various substrates are still not fully understood. In this work, the colloidal probe atomic force microscopy(AFM) technique has been applied to directly quantify the surface forces between calcite particles and different metallic substrates,including carbon steel(CR1018), low alloy steel(4140), stainless steel(SS304) and tungsten carbide,under different water chemistries(i.e., salinity and p H). Measured force profiles revealed that the attractive van der Waals(VDW) interaction contributed to the attachment of the calcium carbonate particles on substrate surfaces, while the repulsive electric double layer(EDL) interactions could inhibit the attachment behaviors. High salinity and acidic p H conditions of aqueous solutions could weaken the EDL repulsion and promote the attachment behavior. The adhesion of calcite particles with CR1018 and4140 substrates was much stronger than that with SS304 and tungsten carbide substrates. The bulk scaling tests in aqueous solutions from an industrial oil production process showed that much more severe scaling behaviors of calcite was detected on CR1018 and 4140 than those on SS304 and tungsten carbide, which agreed with surface force measurement results. Besides, high salinity and acidic p H can significantly enhance the scaling phenomena. This work provides fundamental insights into the scaling mechanisms of calcite at the nanoscale with practical implications for the selection of suitable antiscaling materials in petroleum industries.

As an effective strategy to improve the properties of electrocatalysts,magnetic field-assisted electrocatalytic water splitting has attracted increasing attention ***,the corresponding enhancements mostly depend on the exertion of an external magnetic field during electrochemical reactions,which results in a high cost of industrial production,and makes the magnetic field manipulation of electrocatalysis become a challenging *** this work,instead of the external magnetic field,a bias magnetic field is self-supplied by the remanence state of a ferromagnetic electrocatalyst of *** to the assistance of this bias magnetic field,the FePt film in the remanence state shows the overpotential of 229 mV during hydrogen evolution reaction,which is much lower than that in its demagnetization state(283 mV).Our findings demonstrate that the remanence in ferromagnetic electrocatalysts can improve the catalytic performance,which is attributed to the decrease in domain walls.

Two-way shape memory effect in a Ti-Zr-Nb-Ta high-temperature shape memory alloy

The two-way shape memory effect in a Ti-18.5Zr-10Nb-3.5Ta high-temperature shape memory alloy was investigated.X-ray diffraction measurem ent shows that the alloy is composed of orthorhombicα"-martensite.ωphase is not found in Ti-18.5Zr-10Nb-3.5Ta alloy due to the suppressing effect of Ta ***α"-martensite laths are found in the transmission electron microscope observation;after the bending deformation,there appear a lot of *** alloy exhibits a shape memory strain of 3.8%aud a high reverse martensite transformation start temperature of 464 *** maximum two-way shape memory strain of 1.2%is obtained in the alloy with the prebending training strain of 10%.The mechanism can be ascribed to the effect of internal stress field caused by dislocations.

Somatostatin,a naturally produced neuroprotective peptide,depresses excitatory neurotransmission and exerts anti-proliferative and anti-inflammatory effects on the *** this review,we summarize the progress of somatostatin treatment of diabetic retinopathy through analysis of relevant studies published from February 2019 to February 2023 extracted from the PubMed and Google Scholar *** neuroprotection,which occurs as a consequence of declined expression or dysregulation of retinal somatostatin in the very early stages of diabetic retinopathy,triggers retinal neurovascular unit impairment and microvascular *** replacement is a promising treatment for retinal neurodegeneration in diabetic *** pre-clinical and clinical trials of somatostatin analog treatment for early diabetic retinopathy have been *** one such trial(EUROCONDOR),topical administration of somatostatin was found to exert neuroprotective effects in patients with pre-existing retinal neurodysfunction,but had no impact on the onset of diabetic ***,we concluded that somatostatin restoration may be especially beneficial for the growing population of patients with early-stage *** order to achieve early prevention of diabetic retinopathy initiation,and thereby salvage visual function before the appearance of moderate non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy,several issues need to be *** include the needs to:a)update and standardize the retinal screening scheme to incorporate the detection of early neurodegeneration,b)identify patient subgroups who would benefit from somatostatin analog supplementation,c)elucidate the interactions of somatostatin,particularly exogenously-delivered somatostatin analogs,with other retinal peptides in the context of hyperglycemia,and d)design safe,feasible,low cost,and effective administration routes.

Accelerated reconstruction of ZIF-67 with significantly enhanced glucose detection sensitivity

Research on metal-organic framework(MOF)-based non-enzymatic glucose sensors usually ignores the impact of the surface reconstruction degree of MOF on the activity of catalyzing glucose *** this work,we choose zeolitic imidazolate framework-67(ZIF-67),which is commonly used in glucose sensing,as a representative to investigate the influence of reconstruction degree on its structure and glucose catalytic *** employing the electrochemical activation strategy,the activity of ZIF-67 in catalyzing glucose gradually increased with the prolongation of the activation time,reaching the optimum after 2 h *** detection sensitivity of the activated ZIF-67 was 19 times higher than that of the initial ZIF-67,and the limit of detection(LOD)was lowered from 7 to 0.4μ*** findings demonstrate that the oxidation degree of ZIF-67 deepened rapidly with continuously activation and was basically reconstructed to CoOOH after 2 h activation,accompanied by a morphological change from cuboctahedral to ***,theoretical investigation revealed that ZIF-67 is not suitable as a stable glucose sensor electrode since the adsorbed glucose molecules hasten the dissociation of ligands and the breaking of Co-N bond in ***,our work has important implications for the rational design of next-generation MOF-based glucose sensors.

Unraveling role of double-exchange interaction in electrochemical water oxidation by external magnetic field

Double-exchange(DE) interaction plays an important role in electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction(OER).However,precise achievement of DE interaction often requires foreign dopants or vacancy engineering,leading to destabilization of the catalysts and deterioration of *** contrast,the utilization of environmentally friendly,contactless,and continuously adjustable magnetic fields to study the OER process is profitable to avoid aforementioned interference factors and further elucidate the direct relationship_(0.5)between DE interaction and OER ***,by using cobalt hydroxide carbonate(Co(OH)(CO_(3))·xH_(2)O,CoHC) nanostructures as a proof-of-concept study,external magnetic fields are carefully implemented to verify the role of DE interaction during water oxidation *** studies reveal that external magnetic fields effectively enhance the reaction rate of the catalyst,the overpotential decreases from 386 to 355 mV(100 mA·cm^(-2)),while Tafel slopes drastically decline from 93 to 67 mV·dec^(-1)(1.0 T).Moreover,magnetic field increment exhibits robust *** in situ Raman and impedance measurements under external field,it can be found that magnetic field promotes the electron migration between Co^(2+) and Co^(3+) in the CoHC catalysts with the assistance of DE interactions,thus boosting the OER efficiency.
