Jaffe-Campanacci syndrome resulted in amputation: A case report

BACKGROUND Jaffe-Campanacci syndrome(JCS)is a very rare syndrome.The treatment of JCS is more conservative,and most authors recommend that no surgery should be done in asymptomatic patients.The conventional concept holds that the natural course of non-ossifying fibromas(NOFs)grows with the development of bones,and the osteolytic region gradually stops expanding and self-healing through bone ossifying around the lesion and ossification within the lesion.But in this case,the bone lesions were potentially biologically aggressive,which led to severe limb deformities and pain.CASE SUMMARY We present the case of a 5-year-old girl with JCS presenting with not only NOF sand café-au-lait macules,but also showed features not mentioned before,severe limb pain,and at last resulted in amputation.She was admitted to our hospital after presenting with claudication and mild pain over her right thigh,which worsened when stretching or being touched.Skin examination revealed multiple café-au-lait macules on the neck,arm,axilla,and torso,including the nipples and perineum.Radiographs revealed multiple lytic lesions in the proximal part of the right humerus,distal part of the right clavicle,proximal and distal parts of the right femur,and proximal parts of the right tibia and fibula.Curettage and biopsy were performed on the distal part of the right femur.At the age of 7,the girl was re-admitted to our hospital for a pathological fracture in the middle in the right femur and underwent Intralesional excision,internal fixation,bone grafting,and spica casting.At the age of 10,the girl came to our hospital again for severe pain of the right leg.Amputation from the middle level of the right femur was performed.We present the case of a 5-year-old girl with JCS presenting with not only NOFs and café-au-lait macules,but also showed features not mentioned before,severe limb pain,and at last resulted in amputation.She was admitted to our hospital after presenting with claudication and mild pain over her right thigh,which worsened when stretchi

Solid-state atomic hydrogen as a broad-spectrum RONS scavenger for accelerated diabetic wound healing

Hydrogen therapy shows great promise as a versatile treatment method for diseases associated with the overexpression of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species（RONS）. However, developing an advanced hydrogen therapy platform that integrates controllable hydrogen release, efficient RONS elimination, and biodegradability remains a giant technical challenge. In this study, we demonstrate for the first time that the tungsten bronze phase H0.53WO3（HWO） is an exceptionally ideal hydrogen carrier, with salient features including temperature-dependent highly-reductive atomic hydrogen release and broad-spectrum RONS scavenging capability distinct from that of molecular hydrogen. Moreover, its unique p H-responsive biodegradability ensures post-therapeutic clearance at pathological sites. Treatment with HWO of diabetic wounds in an animal model indicates that the solid-state atomic H promotes vascular formation by activating M2-type macrophage polarization and anti-inflammatory cytokine production, resulting in acceleration of chronic wound healing. Our findings significantly expand the basic categories of hydrogen therapeutic materials and pave the way for investigating more physical forms of hydrogen species as efficient RONS scavengers for clinical disease treatment.

In 2015, a group of mathematicians at the University of Washington, Bothell, discovered the15th pentagon that can cover a plane, with no gaps and overlaps. However, research on its containment measure theory or geometric probability is limited. In this study, the Laplace extension of Buffon’s problem is generalized to the case of the 15th pentagon. In the solving process, the explicit expressions for the generalized support function and containment function of this irregular pentagon are derived.In addition, the chord length distribution function and density function of random distance of this pentagon are obtained in terms of the containment function.

Level pinning of anti-PT-symmetric circuits for efficient wireless power transfer

Wireless power transfer(WPT) technology based on magnetic resonance(a basic physical phenomenon)can directly transfer energy from the source to the load without wires and other physical contacts, and has been successfully applied to implantable medical devices, electric vehicles, robotic arms and other fields.However, due to the frequency splitting of near-field coupling, the resonant WPT system has some unique limitations, such as poor transmission stability and low efficiency. Here, we propose anti-resonance with level pinning for high-performance WPT. By introducing the anti-resonance mode into the basic WPT platform, we uncover the competition between dissipative coupling and coherent coupling to achieve novel level pinning, and construct an effective anti-parity-time(anti-PT)-symmetric non-Hermitian system that is superior to previous PT-symmetric WPT schemes. On the one hand, the eigenvalue of the anti-PT-symmetric system at resonance frequency is always pure real in both strong and weak coupling regions, and can be used to overcome the transmission efficiency decrease caused by weak coupling, as brought about by, for example, a large size ratio of the transmitter to receiver, or a long transmission distance.On the other hand, due to the level pinning effect of the two kinds of coupling mechanisms, the working frequency of the system is guaranteed to be locked, so frequency tracking is not required when the position and size of the receiver change. Even if the system deviates from the matching condition, an efficient WPT can be realized, thereby demonstrating the robustness of the level pinning. The experimental results show that when the size ratio of the transmitter coil to the receiver coil is 4.29(which is in the weak coupling region), the transfer efficiency of the anti-PT-symmetric system is nearly 4.3(3.2) times higher than that of the PT-symmetric system when the matching conditions are satisfied(deviated). BACKGROUND Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2(MEN2)is a rare,autosomal dominant endocrine disease.Currently,the RET proto-oncogene is the only gene implicated in MEN2A pathogenesis.Once an RET carrier is detected,family members should be screened to enable early detection of medullary thyroid carcinoma,pheochromocytoma,and hyperparatitity.Among these,medullary thyroid carcinoma is the main factor responsible for patient mortality.Accordingly,delineating strategies to inform clinical follow-up and treatment plans based on genes is paramount for clinical practitioners.CASE SUMMARY Herein,we present RET proto-oncogene mutations,clinical characteristics,and treatment strategies in a family with MEN2A.A family study was conducted on patients diagnosed with MEN2A.DNA was extracted from the peripheral blood of family members,and first-generation exon sequencing of the RET protooncogene was conducted.The C634Y mutation was identified in three family members spanning three generations.Two patients were sequentially diagnosed with pheochromocytomas and bilateral medullary thyroid carcinomas.A 9-yearold child harboring the gene mutation was diagnosed with medullary thyroid carcinoma.Surgical resection of the tumors was performed.All family members were advised to undergo complete genetic testing related to the C634Y mutation,and the corresponding treatments administered based on test results and associated clinical guidelines.CONCLUSION Advancements in MEN2A research are important for familial management,assessment of medullary thyroid cancer invasive risk,and deciding surgical timing.

Modularized sulfur storage achieved by 100% space utilization host for high performance lithium-sulfur batteries

Popularization of lithium-sulfur batteries(LSBs) is still hindered by shuttle effect and volume expansion.Herein, a new modularized sulfur storage strategy is proposed to solve above problems and accomplished via employing 100% space utilization host material of cobalt loaded carbon nanoparticles derived from ZIF-67. The modular dispersed storage of sulfur not only greatly increases the proportion of active sulfur,but also inhibits the occurrence of volume expansion. Meanwhile, 100% space utilization host material can greatly improve the conductivity of the cathode, provide a larger electrolyte wetting interface and effectively suppress the shuttle effect. Moreover, loaded cobalt particles have high catalytic activity for electrochemical reaction and can effectively improve the redox kinetics. The cell with new cathode host material carbonized at 650 ℃(ZIF-67(650 ℃)) exhibits superior rate performance and can maintain a high specific capacity of 950 m Ah/g after 100 cycles at 0.2 C, showing a good cycle stability.

Macrophages,a heterogeneous population of innate immune cells,exhibit remarkable plasticity and play pivotal roles in coordinating immune responses and maintaining tissue homeostasis within the context of metabolic diseases.The activation of inflammatory macrophages in obese adipose tissue leads to detrimental effects,inducing insulin resistance through increased inflammation,impaired thermogenesis,and adipose tissue fibrosis.Meanwhile,adipose tissue macrophages also play a beneficial role in maintaining adipose tissue homeostasis by regulating angiogenesis,facilitating the clearance of dead adipocytes,and promoting mitochondrial transfer.Exploring the heterogeneity of macrophages in obese adipose tissue is crucial for unraveling the pathogenesis of obesity and holds significant potential for targeted therapeutic interventions.Recently,the dual effects and some potential regulatory mechanisms of macrophages in adipose tissue have been elucidated using single-cell technology.In this review,we present a comprehensive overview of the intricate activation mechanisms and diverse functions of macrophages in adipose tissue during obesity,as well as explore the potential of drug delivery systems targeting macrophages,aiming to enhance the understanding of current regulatory mechanisms that may be potentially targeted for treating obesity or metabolic diseases.

Effect of health education based on information-motivationbehavioral skills model on patients with unilateral vestibular dysfunction

BACKGROUND Vestibular dysfunction(VH)is a common concomitant symptom of late peri-pheral vestibular lesions,which can be trauma,poisoning,infection,heredity,and neurodegeneration,but about 50%of the causes are unknown.The study uses the information-motivation-behavioral skills(IMB)model for health education,effectively improve the quality of life,increase their self-confidence,reduce anxiety and depression,and effectively improve the psychological state of patients.AIM To explore the effect of health education based on the IMB model on the degree of vertigo,disability,anxiety and depression in patients with unilateral vestibular hypofunction.METHODS The clinical data of 80 patients with unilateral vestibular hypofunction from January 2019 to December 2021 were selected as the retrospective research objects,and they were divided into the control group and the observation group with 40 cases in each group according to different nursing methods.Among them,the control group was given routine nursing health education and guidance,and the observation group was given health education and guidance based on the IMB model.The changes in self-efficacy,anxiety and depression,and quality of life of patients with unilateral VH were compared between the two groups.RESULTS There was no significant difference in General Self-Efficacy Scale(GSES)scale scores between the two groups of patients before nursing(P>0.05),which was comparable;after nursing,the GSES scale scores of the two groups were higher than those before nursing.The nursing group was higher than the control group,and the difference was statistically significant(P0.05).After nursing,the HADS score,anxiety,and depression subscale scores of the two groups of patients were lower than those before nursing,and the nursing group was lower than the control group,and the difference was statistically

Circadian disturbance induces erectile dysfunction by impairing endothelial function

In order to explore the impact of circadian disturbance on erectile function,we randomly divided 24 adult male rats into groups of control(light on at 8:00 a.***.and off at 8:00 p.m.),dark/dark(DD;constant dark),light/light(LL;constant light),and shift dark/light(DL;light off at 8:00 a.***.and on at 8:0o p.m.).Four weeks later,erectile function was measured and corpora cavernosa were harvested for analysis.The maximum intracavernous pressure(mlcP)and mCP/mean arterial pressure(MAP)ratio in the DD,LL,and DL groups were significantly lower than that in the control group.The LL and DL groups showed significantly attenuated endothelial nitric oxide synthase(eNOS),while DD,LL,and DL showed reduced neuronal nitric oxide synthase(nNOS)at both mRNA and protein levels.The production of nitric oxide(NO)and cyclic guanosinemonophosphate(cGMP)was inhibited by altered light/dark cycles to varying degrees.Circadian disturbance impaired endothelial function and contributed to erectile dysfunction.For the core circadian elements,mRNA expression of circadian locomotor output cycles kaput(Clock)and brain/muscle aryl-hydrocarbon receptor nuclear translocator-like protein 1(Bmal1)was elevated in the DL group,but their protein expression was not significantly changed.DD,LL,and DL increased period 1(Per1)and Per3 levels,while LL and DL increased PER1 levels.No significant difference was found for Per2levels,and PER2 and PER3 concentrations were not significantly changed.Moreover,LL and DL significantly increased cryptochrome-1(CRY1)and CRY2 at both mRNA and protein levels.The altered light/dark rat model showed that circadian disturbance contributed to erectile dysfunction probably by impairing endothelial function.Meanwhile,the core circadian elements were detected in the corpora cavernosa,but these were disrupted.However,which circadian element regulates erectile function and how it works need further analysis.
