The province of British Columbia, Canada, has established an Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) to protect the most suitable soil landscapes for agriculture. Increases in population and urbanization have resulted in development challenges on ALR lands. The metro Vancouver area is the most productive agricultural area in British Columbia as well as the most rapidly growing urban region. The increase in impervious areas has decreased the amount of arable land for soil-based agriculture and altered the hydrological cycle. Analysis using a combination of aerial imagery and GIS found that impervious areas comprise about 10 percent of the ALR within metro Vancouver. Farm residences and greenhouses have the largest effect on reducing the soil surface for water infiltration. This decrease in area has negatively influenced the ecosystem heath of the region, as well as, decreasing the amount of agricultural land for soil based agriculture and both surface and groundwater dynamics.

Our objective is to evaluate different pharmacologic strategies for VTE （venous thromboembolism） prophylaxis following orthopedic surgery at a tertiary academic medical center. This was a retrospective, observational study assessing the efficacy and safety of different strategies for VTE prophylaxis in elective total knee arthroplasty and total hip arthroplasty surgery patients. We evaluated warfarin at two different INR （international normalized ratio） goal ranges （1.5-2.5 and 1.8-2.3） and aspirin 325 mg once or twice daily. The main efficacy outcome was a composite of symptomatic deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism. The main safety outcome was incidence of major or minor bleeding. From January 2010 to June 2010, there were 190 patients in the warfarin group with INR range 1.5-2.5, 214 patients in the warfarin group with INR range 1.8-2.3, and 48 patients in the aspirin group. Of the three strategies, two primary events occurred in each of the warfarin groups （1.6% vs. 1.4%; P = 0.31）. There were no primary events in the aspirin group. Rates of major or minor bleeding were 4.2% in warfarin group INR 1.5-2.5 and 4.7% in warfarin group 1NR 1.8-2.3 （P = 0.19）, and 2.1% in the aspirin arm （P = 0.29）. There were no differences in the incidence of VTE in any of the treatment arms.

Natural selection processes are constantly influencing vegetation community composition. In the presence of anthropogenic contaminants additional forces act as filters controlling persistence of naturally occurring species. Classical species diversity and richness metrics can miss subtle changes under disturbance regimes while species composition and functional characteristics may be able to detect them. Our study was designed to investigate legacy impacts of explosives contaminated soils in an experimental minefield on vegetative communities using ecological metrics. As hypothesized, species diversity and richness showed no change in the presence of explosive compounds while species composition provided clear separation of groups and functional trait dominance was also observed to change. Overall, presence of anthropogenic contaminates have led to community composition and functional shifts for vegetation after initial contamination. The responses in species composition and functional diversity/richness were a result of new tolerant species filling open niches in contaminated plots. more work is needed to confirm this in varied systems and in the presence of diverse contaminants.

Aggregate extraction in the Lower Fraser Valley of British Columbia, Canada, has affected the soil water storage of the Pepin Creek watershed. Although local government has set regulations for aggregate extraction projects to avoid negative environmental impacts, the gradual loss of soil materials and associated changes in vegetative cover has led to an alteration of the water balance within the watershed, which may affect surface or groundwater levels, and aquatic habitats. The study assessed the effects of aggregate extraction on the water storage of the Pepin Creek watershed and estimated that 25% of the surface area of the Canadian portion of the watershed has been affected by aggregate mining with an estimated loss of water storage of 10%. Evapotranspiration has decreased as a result of the removal of the vegetative cover. Precipitation has remained relatively constant over the study period but the annual discharge measured at Pepin Creek has decreased. Recommendations for enhancing environmental monitoring to better measure and understand ecological functions of the watershed during aggregate extraction are provided.

AIm To consolidate the present evidence of effectiveness in renal functioning and graft survival following early introduction of mammalian target of rapamycin(m TOR) inhibitors with or without calcineurin inhibitors(CNIs) in renal transplant *** We analysed the current literature following PROSPERO approval describing the role of immunosuppressive agent, m TOR inhibitors as an alternative to CNI within six months of renal transplant by searching the Pub med, EmBASE, Cochrane, Crossref, and Scopus using me SH terms. RESULTS Six articles of early withdrawal of CNI and introduction of m TOR-inhibitors within six months of renal transplantation were sought. Glomerular filtration rate(GFR) and serum creatinine were significantly better in m TOR inhibitor group with equivalent survival at 12 mo, even though Biopsy Proven Acute rejection was significantly higher in m TOR-inhibitor group. CONCLUSION The evidence reviewed in this meta-analysis suggests that early introduction m TOR-inhibitors substantial CNI minimization. The m TOR inhibitors such as everolimus and sirolimus, due to their complementary mechanism of action and favourable nephrotoxicity profile; better glomerular filtration, lower serum creatinine with equivalent survival. Having said that, due to the higher rejection rate, may influence the use of these regimens to patients with moderate to high immunological risk patients.
