Redox homeostasis refers to the balance between the production of reactive oxygen species(ROS)as well as reactive nitrogen species(RNS),and their elimination by *** is linked to all important cellular activities and oxidative stress is a result of imbalance between pro-oxidants and antioxidant *** stress perturbs many cellular activities,including processes that maintain the integrity of *** acids are highly reactive and therefore particularly susceptible to *** DNA damage response detects and repairs these DNA *** DNA repair processes are therefore essential for maintaining cellular viability,but they decline considerably during *** damage and deficiencies in DNA repair are increasingly described in age-related neurodegenerative diseases,such as Alzheimer’s disease,Parkinson’s disease,amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Huntington’s ***,oxidative stress has long been associated with these ***,both redox dysregulation and DNA damage increase significantly during aging,which is the biggest risk factor for neurodegenerative ***,the links between redox dysfunction and DNA damage,and their joint contributions to pathophysiology in these conditions,are only just *** review will discuss these associations and address the increasing evidence for redox dysregulation as an important and major source of DNA damage in neurodegenerative *** these connections may facilitate a better understanding of disease mechanisms,and ultimately lead to the design of better therapeutic strategies based on preventing both redox dysregulation and DNA damage.

The impact of personality on the success of prospecting behavior in changing landscapes

Personality can play a large role in dispersal decisions, influencing how each individual estimates and values ex- pected costs versus benefits of ventnring out to explore the unknown. we contrast the impact of persistence on fitness using deci- sion theory models to examine the relative success of prospecting movement （which is a widespread behavior used by animals to explore available breeding habitat before determining where to settle） in different landscapes among individuals with different personalities. while evaluating trends in the costs and benefits of movement we provide a quantifiable measure of the impacts of relative tenacity in prospecting behavior on fitness gains/losses. Our model results predict that, regardless of landscape composi- tion, individuals with greater tenacity in prospecting strategy have reduced fitness gains relative to individuals who are more willing to both initiate novel strategies, but then also abandon the new strategy rapidly if initial search does not seem fruitful. we show that fitness gains from choosing an appropriate prospecting strategy （i.e. abandoning poor habitat or staying in rich habitat） can be very high, indicating a potentially large influence from personality on fitness. Importantly, the model predicts that relative fitness gains are highly dependent on the availability of high quality habitat in the landscape, even if the difference under varying fitness outcomes between poor and rich habitat was substantial

Diagnostic accuracy of tests for Helicobacter pylori in an Alaska Native population

AIM： TO evaluate the accuracy of two non-invasive tests in a population of Alaska Native persons. High rates of Helicobacter pylori （H. pylon] infection, H. pyIori treatment failure, and gastric cancer in this population necessitate documentation of infection status at multiple time points over a patient＇s *** test, 13C urea breath test （UBT）, and immunoglobulin G antibodies to H. pylori in serum. The performances of 13C-UBT and antibody test were compared to a gold standard defined by a positive H. pylori test by culture or, in case of a negative culture result, by positive histology and a positive rapid urease test.RESULTS： The sensitivity and specificity of the 13C- UBT were 93% and 88%, respectively, relative to the gold standard. The antibody test had an equivalent sensitivity of 93% with a reduced specificity of 68%. The false positive results for the antibody test were associated with previous treatment for an H. pylorlinfection [relative risk （RR） = 2.8]. High levels of antibodies to H. py/or/were associated with chronic gastritis and male gender, while high scores in the 13C-UBT test were associated with older age and with theH. pylori bacteria load on histological examination （RR = 4.4）. CONCLUSION： The 13C-UBT outperformed the antibody test for H. pylori and could be used when a noninvasive test is clinically necessary to document treatment outcome or when monitoring for reinfection.

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted global mobility.‘Lockdowns’and travel bans have been used as control measures by international ***,the ways that we use buildings have also been impacted by these ***,this paper explores the roles of heritage sites in a post-COVID-19 pandemic *** research is part of the Urban Heritage and Community Resilience:Conservation,Tourism,and Pandemic project,and it employs methods such as semistructured interviews,participant observations,archival research,and focus group discussions(FGDs).This paper is based on semistructured interviews conducted with one hundred eighteen participants across ten popular heritage sites in Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar,*** fndings confrm the debated claim in postdisaster studies asserting that some of these Acehnese heritage sites,especially those imbued with religious values,have become places of ***,during the pandemic,these sites have facilitated community resilience by helping people feel closer to *** practising Acehnese Muslims,prayer at home is culturally acceptable,but praying at the mosque,which is one of the essential heritages of the Acehnese,has contributed to and strengthened the sense of community ***,visitation and participation in heritage sites that include experiencing the sense of place and conducting religious and cultural activities is integral to community resilience.

Targeting inflammation to reduce brain injury in growth restricted newborns:a potential treatment?

Introduction： Intrauterine growth restriction （IUGR） is commonly caused by placental insufficiency, resulting in a chronic hypoxic environment and subsequent abnormal fetal development. The developing brain is particularly vulnerable to IUGR conditions. Multiple causal factors associated with brain injury in fetal growth restriction include the timing of placental insufficiency, onset and subsequent severity of fetal compromise, fetal cerebrovascular response and the redistribution of brain blood flow. Although a significant proportion of IUGR infants exhibit adverse long-term neu- rological outcomes, relatively few studies have focused on the mechanisms of brain injury in the IUGR neonate. Clini- cal imaging studies of IUGR infants demonstrate alterations in grey matter and white matter volume and structure （Tolsa et al., 2004; Esteban et al., 2010; Padilla et al., 2015）. Cortical grey matter volume is reduced by up to 28% compared with control infants （Tolsa et al., 2004） and both white and grey matter show structural changes （Esteban et al., 2010）. These structural changes persist at 1 year of age and are associated with significant developmental disabilities （Tolsa et al., 2004;

A comparison of the ballistic behaviour of conventionally sintered and additively manufactured alumina

Production of ceramic armour solutions on-demand/in-theatre would have significant logistical and military ***,even assuming that such technologies could be successfully deployed in the field,such near net-shape manufacturing technology is relatively immature compared to conventional sintering of *** this study,the ballistic performance of a series of additively manufactured(AM)/rapidly-prototyped(RP)alumina tiles of 97.2%of the density of Sintox FATM were investigated using both forward-and reverse-ballistic *** experiments,undertaken with compressed gasguns,employed the depth-of-penetration technique and flash X-ray as primary diagnostics to interrogate both efficiency of penetration and projectile-target interaction,*** RP alumina was found to exhibit useful ballistic properties,successfully defeating steel-cored(AP)7.62×39 mm BXN rounds at velocities of up-to c.a.850 m/s,while exhibiting comparable failure modes to conventionally sintered armour-grade Sintox ***,where awas introduced into the RP material failure modes changed dramatically with performance dropping below that of conventionally sintered ***,the results from both sets of experiments were complimentary and clearly indicated the potential of such RP materials to play an active role in provision of real-world body armour solutions provided quality control of the RP material can be maintained.

Objective:To detect some common microbial agents of vaginal discharge and improve the current syndromic management of abnormal vaginal ***:A prospective study of female genital swabs collected from obstetrics and gynecology units of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital,Kano,Nigeria and an analysed of microscopy,culture and sensitivity in the medical microbiology and parasitology laboratory of this hospital were conducted from December 2007 to December *** on epidemiologic indices were collected from the patients,using structured interviewer-administered ***:Eight hundred and forty Candida species were detected,constituting 60%(n=840) of 1 400 female genital discharge samples of microbial etiology in a total of 2 000 female genital samples *** distribution of vaginal candidiasis was tbe highest in young adults aged 21 to 30 years with 43%(n=360) of the total 840 cases. Pregnant women that presented with vaginal candidiasis constituted 40%(n=360) of the total 840 *** risk groups included the immuno-suppression with 24%(n=202),group on hormonal therapy with 15%(n=126) and broad spectrum antibiotics users with 16%(n=134).Conclusions: The results show that Candida is the most common cause of vaginitis and vulvo-vaginal candidiasis followed by *** in the young adults aged 21 to 30 years,pregnant mothers, immuno-suppression,contraceptive and broad spectrum antibiotic *** management of vaginal candidiasis and vulvo-vaginal candidiasis is recommended especially among the risk groups in order to avoid complications and reduce HIV transmission.

Objective:To investigate the prevalence of pathogens of abnormal vaginal discharges and to improve the current syndromic management of abnormal vaginal ***:A prospective study of pathogens of abnormal vaginal discharge was carried out from December 2007 to December *** of female genital swabs were collected from Obstetrics and Gynecology Units of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital,Kano,Nigeria,and analyzed by microscopy,culture and sensitivity test in Medical Microbiology Laboratory of Aminu Kano Teaching ***:Microorganisms were detected in 70%(1 400) of a total 2 000 female genital swabs *** species peaked with 42.0%(840),followed by Gardnerella vaginalis,a pathogen of bacteria vaginosis with 26.0%.The distribution of abnormal vaginal discharge was highest in young adults aged from 21 to 30 ***:The commonest Microorganisms of infective vaginal discharge were Candida species,followed by Gardnerella vaginalis,a pathogen of bacterial *** discharge was prevalent among young adults. we recommend prevention,early diagnosis and prompt treatment of infected female,especially among the young,sexually active group in order to reduce the menace of HIV transmission.
