Aphids are major insect pests in agriculture and forestry *** attacks by natural enemies,many aphids release an alarm pheromone to protect their *** most aphids,the main component of the aphid alarm pheromone(AAP)is the sesquiterpene hydrocarbon(E)-β-farnesene(Eβf).However,the mechanisms behind its biosynthesis and regulation remain poorly *** this study,we used the bird cherry–oat aphid Rhopalosiphum padi,which is an important wheat aphid,to investigate the regulatory mechanisms of Eβf *** results showed that Eβf biosynthesis occurs during the mature embryo period and the molting period of the 1st-and 2nd-instar *** provide the prerequisite material for Eβf production and *** on transcriptome sequencing,RNAi analysis,hormone treatments,and quantitative measurements,we found that the biosynthesis of Eβf utilizes acetyl coenzyme A produced from fatty acid degradation,which can be suppressed by juvenile hormone but it is promoted by 20-hydroxyecdysone through the modulation of fatty acid *** is the first systemic study on the modulation of Eβf production in *** results of our study provide insights into the molecular regulatory mechanisms of AAP biosynthesis,as well as valuable information for designing potential aphid control strategies.

Single-shot coherent diffraction imaging of isolated nanosized particles has seen remarkable success in recent years,yielding in-situ measurements with ultra-high spatial and temporal *** progress of high-repetition-rate sources for intense X-ray pulses has further enabled recording datasets containing millions of diffraction images,which are needed for the structure determination of specimens with greater structural variety and dynamic *** size of the datasets,however,represents a monumental problem for their ***,we present an automatized approach for finding semantic similarities in coherent diffraction images without relying on human expert *** introducing the concept of projection learning,we extend self-supervised contrastive learning to the context of coherent diffraction imaging and achieve a dimensionality reduction producing semantically meaningful embeddings that align with physical *** method yields substantial improvements compared to previous approaches,paving the way toward real-time and large-scale analysis of coherent diffraction experiments at X-ray free-electron lasers.

While much attention has been given to bio-robotics in recent years, not much of this has been given to the challenging subject of locomotion in slippery conditions. This study begins to rectify this by proposing a biomimetic approach to generating the friction required to give sufficient propulsive force on a slippery substrate. We took inspiration from a successful biological solution-that of applying hair-like structures to the propulsive appendages, similar to the setae found in nereid polychaetes living in muddy habitats. We began by examining the morphology and the mean locomotion parameters of one of the most common nereids.. Nereis diversicolor. following this study, we designed and fabricated a robotic system with appendages imitating the biological shape found in the worm. A flexible control system was developed to allow most of the locomotion parameters observed in the real worm to be applied to the robot. Experiments on three different natural substrates ranging from fine sand to gravel showed that, whereas a plate attached to the appendage generated most thrust on a small particle substrate, a bundle of artificial setae attached to the appendage generated most thrust on a large particle substrate. On all types of substrate tested, an appendage without any attachment did significantly worse than one with. This suggests that hair-like structures can be advantageous.

The correlation of single-particle imaging and absorption spectroscopy made the development of sizing curves possible and enabled rapid size determination of semiconductor nanocrystals based solely on optical *** increasing demand and production of such materials has resulted in a question of comparability between existing models and adequate volume-weighted size-determining measurement ***-angle X-ray scattering(SAXS)is a well-established method for obtaining nanostructural information from particle systems while operating sample quantities up to a commercial scale with a large amount of statistically based *** work utilizes laboratory SAXS to characterize cadmium selenide nanocrystals with band edge energies between 1.97 and 3.08 *** evaluation of the scattering patterns is based on an indirect fourier transformation(IfT),while dimensional parameters are derived from the model-free pair distance distribution functions(Dmode and Dg),as well as the modeled volume(Dv)and number(Dn)-weighted size-density *** find that comparable data from D̅n agree well with existing X-ray diffraction(XRD)and with transmission electron microscopy(TEM)results described in literature;this qualifies SAXS as an equivalent integral characterization *** based on an estimate,the radius of gyration yields equivalent accurate ***,corresponding volume-weighted data are shown that can be useful when transferring information to other *** parametrization represents the largest estimated size of the sample and implies that particles interact and deviate from the spherical morphology,whereas Dv demonstrates results not considering such effects.A full set of the parameters discussed quantifies the quality of a sample.

The formation of long-range ordered aperiodic molecular films on quasicrystalline substrates is a new challenge that provides an opportunity for further surface functionalization. This aim can be realized through the smart selection of molecular building blocks, based on symmetry-matching between the underlying quasicrystal and individual molecules. It was previously found that the geometric registry between the C60 molecules and the 5- and 10-fold surfaces was key to the growth of quasiperiodic organic layers. However, an attempt to form a quasiperiodic C60 network on i-Ag-In-Yb substrates was unsuccessful, resulting in disordered molecular films. Here we report the growth of 5-fold symmetric corannulene C20H10 molecules on the 5-fold surfaces of i-Ag-In-Yb quasicrystals. Low-energy electron diffraction （LEED） and scanning tunneling microscopy （STM） revealed long-range quasiperiodic order and 5-fold rotational symmetry in self-assembled corannulene films. Recurrent decagonal molecular rings were seen, resulting from the decoration of specific adsorption sites with local pentagonal symmetry by corannulenes, adsorbed with their bowl-openings pointing away from the surface. They were identified as （Ag, In）-containing rhombic triacontahedral （RTH） duster centers and pentagonal Yb motifs, which cannot be occupied simultaneously due to steric hindrance. It is proposed that symmetry-matching between the molecule and specific substrate sites drives this organization. Alteration of the molecular rim by the introduction of CH substituents appeared to increase molecule mobility on the potential energy surface and facilitate trapping at these specific sites. This finding suggests that rational selection of molecular moiety enables the templated self-assembly of molecules leading to an ordered aperiodic corannulene layer.

Novel visualization methods and strategies are necessary to cope with the deluge of datasets present in any scientific field to make discoveries and find answers to previously unanswered *** methods and strategies should not only present scientific findings as images in a concise way but also need to be effective and expressive,which often remain ***,we present Versus,a tool to enable easy image quality assessment and image ranking,utilizing a two-alternative forced choice methodology(2AfC)and an efficient ranking algorithm based on a binary *** tool provides a systematic way of setting up evaluation experiments via the web without the necessity to install any additional software or require any programming ***,Versus can easily interface with crowdsourcing platforms,such as Amazon’s Mechanical Turk,or can be used as a stand-alone system to carry out evaluations with *** demonstrate the use of Versus by means of an image evaluation study,aiming to determine if hue,saturation,brightness,and texture are good indicators of uncertainty in three-dimensional protein *** from the power of crowdsourcing,we argue that there is demand and also great potential for this tool to become a standard for simple and fast image evaluations,with the aim to test the effectiveness and expressiveness of scientific visualizations.

Contemporary attackers,mainly motivated by financial gain,consistently devise sophisticated penetration techniques to access important information or *** growing use of Internet of Things(IoT)technology in the contemporary convergence environment to connect to corporate networks and cloud-based applications only worsens this situation,as it facilitates multiple new attack vectors to emerge *** such,existing intrusion detection systems suffer from performance degradation mainly because of insufficient considerations and poorly modeled detection *** address this problem,we designed a blended threat detection approach,considering the possible impact and dimensionality of new attack surfaces due to the aforementioned *** collectively refer to the convergence of different technology sectors as the internet of blended *** proposed approach encompasses an ensemble of heterogeneous probabilistic autoencoders that leverage the corresponding advantages of a convolutional variational autoencoder and long short-term memory variational *** extensive experimental analysis conducted on the TON_IoT dataset demonstrated 96.02%detection ***,performance of the proposed approach was compared with various single model(autoencoder)-based network intrusion detection approaches:autoencoder,variational autoencoder,convolutional variational autoencoder,and long short-term memory variational *** proposed model outperformed all compared models,demonstrating f1-score improvements of 4.99%,2.25%,1.92%,and 3.69%,respectively.
