Effects of experimental season of prescribed fire and nutrient addition on structure and function of previously grazed grassland

Aims Understanding the drivers of grassland structure and function fol-lowing livestock removal will inform grassland restoration and ***,we investigated the effects of fire and nutri-ent addition on structure and function in a subtropical semi-native grassland recently released from grazing in south-central *** examined responses of soil nutrients,plant tissue nutrients,bio-mass of live,standing dead and litter,and plant species composi-tion to experimental annual prescribed fire applied during different seasons(wet season *** season),and nutrient additions(N,P and N+P)over 9 *** Experimental plots were set up in a randomized block split-plot design,with season of prescribed fire as the main treatment and nutrient addition as the subplot *** cover data were collected annually from 2002 to 2011 and plant tissue and plant biomass data were collected in 2002-2006 and *** nutrients were analyzed in 2004,2006 and *** Findings Soil total phosphorus(P)levels increased substantially with P addition but were not influenced by prescribed *** of P and N led to increased P and N concentrations in live plant tissues,but prescribed fire reduced N in live *** of tissue N were higher in all plots at the beginning of the exper-iment,an effect that was likely due to grazing activity prior to removal of *** tissue N steadily declined over time in all plots,with annually burned plots declining faster than unburned *** fire was an important driver of standing dead and litter biomass and was important for main-taining grass biomass and percent *** addition was also important:the addition of both N and P was associated with greater live biomass and woody *** of grazing,lack of prescribed fire,and addition of N+P led to a reduction of grass biomass and a large increase in biomass of a woody *** prescribed fire promoted N loss from the system by reducing

Disordered multicomponent systems attract great interest due to their engineering design flexibility and subsequent rich space of ***,detailed characterization of the structure and atomic correlations remains challenging and hinders full navigation of these complex spaces.A lattice cluster expansion is one tool to obtain configurational and energetic *** in theory a cluster expansion can be applied to any system of any dimensionality,the method has primarily been used in binary systems or ternary *** we apply cluster expansions in high-component ionic systems,setting up the largest cluster expansion ever attempted to our *** doing so,we address and discuss challenges specific to high-component ionic systems,namely charge state assignments,structural relaxations,and rank-deficient *** introduce practical procedures to make the fitting and analysis of complex systems tractable,providing guidance for future computational studies of disordered ionic systems.

Environmental Impacts of the Yangtze Three Gorges Project: An Overview of the Chinese-German Research Cooperation

The construction of the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River in China has a great influence on the ecosystems involved. In order to investigate these environmental effects in the Yangtze catchment area as well as downstream of the dam, Forschungszentrum Julich has organized a research network for the Chinese and Germaa partners. In the research fields of （1） interaction water/ sediment/contaminants, （2） vegetation/biodiversity, （3） changing land use/erosion/mass movements, and （4） atmosphere, the partners have accumulated a great deal of expertise in handling major issues and also in developing models and recommendations for action. The following provides an overview of the research network and the research tasks. On the German side, five projects in research field （3） have been in operation since 2008. The results are reported in contributions by Ehret et al., Jaehnig and Cai, Schonbrodt et al., and Seeber et al.. Another five projects in research field （1） have started by September 2010. The research tasks undertaken in these five projects are presented below.

What is the quantitative risk of gastric cancer in the first-degree relatives of patients? A meta-analysis

AIMTo quantify the risk of gastric cancer in first-degree relatives of patients with the *** comprehensive literature search was performed. Case-control trials comparing the frequency of a positive family history of gastric cancer in patients with gastric cancer, vs non-gastric cancer controls were retrieved. Studies with missed or non-extractable data, studies in children, abstracts, and duplicate publications were excluded. A meta-analysis of pooled odd ratios was performed using Review Manager 5.0.25. We performed subgroup analysis on Asian studies and a sensitivity analysis based on the quality of the studies, type of the outcome, sample size, and whether studies considered only first-degree ***-two relevant studies out of 612 potential abstracts (n = 80690 individuals) were included. 19.0% of the patients and 10.9% of the controls had at least one relative with gastric cancer (P he pooled relative risk for the development of gastric cancer in association with a positive family history was 2.35 (95%CI: 1.96-2.81). The Cochran Q test for heterogeneity was positive (P he three outlier studies with the highest relative risks, heterogeneity remained significant (P he result was not different among Asian studies as compared to others and remained robust in several sensitivity analyses. In the 26 studies which exclusively analysed the history of gastric cancer in first-degree relatives, the relative risk was 2.71 (95%CI: 2.08-3.53; P h a first-degree relative affected with gastric cancer have a risk of about 2.5-fold for the development of gastric cancer. This could be due to genetic or environmental factors. Screening and preventive strategies should be developed for this high-risk population.

Aims Nectar is one of the most common floral rewards offered to pol-linators by *** on the plant species,nectar is offered openly or in tubes of various lengths restricting accessibility of this resource for flower visitors with short *** attract-ing pollinators that match floral morphology increases pollination efficiency,flowers could profit from signaling nectar-tube depth to *** flower colors are important signals in plant-pol-linator communication,we investigated whether and which differ-ent chromatic or achromatic aspects of flower color might indicate nectar-tube depth or whether flower colors facilitate the differen-tiation between flowers with long nectar tubes by means of high chromatic *** To this end,we collected flower reflectance spectra of 135 grassland plant *** analyzed flower colors as raw reflectance spectra in principal component analysis(PCA)and in the color space of *** Findings The correlation between flower colors and tube depths was *** the bee’s point of view,blue flowers had on average deeper tubes than green,blue-green and UV-green flowers potentially allow-ing insects to predict tube depths based on blue *** purity did not correlate with nectar-tube depth,nor did the chromatic uniqueness of flower colors in the honeybee color *** wavelength showed a significant but very weak correlation with tube *** achromatic green contrast decreased with increasing tube depth as did brightness;thus deep tubes were less conspicuous than shallow *** components resulting from PCA did not or only slightly correlate with tube *** results illustrate that flower colors may have a certain potential to indicate tube depth,*** accessibility,from a bee’s perspective.

Soil respiration in paludified forests of European Russia

Soil respiration studies in paludified forests of the European part of Russia are quite rare in comparison with those of open peat bogs,which make long-term observations in this region highly *** this study,soil CO2 emissions were measured by the close chamber method in different microlandscapes of paludified *** four summer seasons with different environments,soil respiration ranged from 1078 to 248 mg CO2 m^-2 h^-1 in a paludified spruce forest site with coarse woody debris to 659–820 mg CO2 m^-2 h^-1 in a paludified boggy pine *** most intensive soil respiration was observed during the hot summer of 2013 and the lowest in the hot and humid summer of *** total soil CO2 emissions in paludified forests in 2015–2016 were approximately 2000–3000 g CO2 *** the year,the lowest CO2 emission values were observed from November to April(14–84 mg CO2 m^-2 h^-1)and the maximum were in July and August(522–1205 mg CO2 m^-2 h^-1).The contributions of CO2 emissions in the cold November–April period were 6–8.5%.The impacts of temperature on soil respiration were higher(r2=0.45–0.57)than those of groundwater levels(r^2=0.17–0.49).Soil respiration in the paludified spruce forest and in the pine bog generally were higher than emissions from ecosystems with similar hydrothermal conditions in the boreal zone.

In situ mass spectrometry of autoimmune liver diseases

Primary biliary cirrhosis(PBC),primary sclerosing cholangitis(PSC)and autoimmune hepatitis(AIh)are the major forms of autoimmune liver diseases each characterized by the destruction of a specific liver cell type and the presence of differing *** took a proteomic approach utilizing in situ matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry(MALDI MS)to obtain profiles directly from liver samples of patients with PBC,PSC,AIh and *** ability to precisely localize the region for acquisition of MALDI MS allowed us to obtain profiles from bile ducts,inflammatory infiltrates and hepatocytes from each biopsy *** tools developed to identify peaks and compare peaks across diseases and cell types were used to develop models to classify the *** an initial set of testing samples from PBC patients and controls,we identified unique peaks present in bile ducts,inflammatory infiltrates and hepatocytes that could classify samples in a validation cohort with 88–91%***,profiles of PSC and AIh did not differ significantly from *** of proteins in these peaks may represent novel autoantigens or effector *** findings illustrate the potential of a proteomic approach to autoimmune diseases with in situ MALDI MS.

Lipid and polymer stabilized microbubbles are used in medicine as contrast agents for ultrasound imaging and are being developed for the delivery of water soluble drugs to diseased areas of the ***,many new therapeutics exhibit poor water solubility or stability,which has led to the requirement for the development of effective hydrophobic drug delivery *** study presents a new method to produce microbubbles coated with an oil layer capable of encapsulating hydrophobic drugs and suitable for targeted,triggered drug *** new method utilizes highly controllable flow-focusing microfluidics with lipid oil nanodroplets self-assembling and spreading at gas–aqueous *** layer inside microbubbles were produced with diameters of 2.4±0.3μm(s.d.,1.6μm)and at concentrations up to 10^(6) bubbles per *** mechanism of oil layer inside microbubble assembly and stability were characterized using methods including contact angle measurements,quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring and fluorescence resonance energy transfer imaging.
