Temporal Stability and Transferability of Non-motorized and Total Trip Generation models

Transportation systems provide a means for moving people and the goods from which they are spatially separated. Of the two means of surface transportation, the motorized mode is used extensively for utilitarian travel in developed countries. The increasing reliance on motorized travel has contributed to increased traffic congestion, air pollution, and greenhouse emissions. Non-motorized travel has recently received significant attention as a means to reduce congestion and environmental problems and improve human health. However, non-motorized modeling is generally underdeveloped. This study investigated some changes in non-motorized and total travel and the characteristics of the traveling public in 1990, 1995, 2001, and 2009 using a national travel survey. The study also investigated the temporal transferability of linear-regression trip generation models for non-motorized and total travel under such changes. High-income households made fewer non-motorized trips in 1990 and 1995 compared to 2001 and 2009. Persons aged 50 and over showed an increased demand for non-motorized travel, whereas children aged 0 - 15 showed a decreasing preference for non-motorized travel over time. Regarding temporal stability, only the coefficient for single-adult households with no children was stable across all of the analysis years. For both non-motorized and total travel, most model parameter estimates were stable short term but not long term. In general, the total travel models transferred better than non-motorized models, both short term and long term. Despite not finding universal stability in model parameter estimates, the models were marginally able to replicate travel in 2009 relative to the locally estimated 2009 model.

Effects of Obesity and Smoking on Survival in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

Background: Obesity is an emerging leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the US and the relationship between obesity, tobacco, and survival in NSCLC is unclear. methods: Data (n = 87,631) were obtained from linkage of the 1996-2007 Florida Cancer Data System to the Agency for Health Care Administration database providing procedure and diagnoses codes. Survival time was calculated from date of diagnosis to date of death. Smoking status was categorized as never, current, and former. Obesity (yes/no) = ICD9 code BmI > 30 kg/m2, cachexia = ICD9 code “wasting syndrome”, & non-obese = non-obese & non cachectic. Cox proportional regression models used to predict survival;demographic, clinical, treatment factors, & comorbidities were included in adjusted models with smoking status and obesity as the main factors. Results: The majority of patients (pts) were either former (49%) or current (40%) smokers, & non-obese (88%). 6.8% of pts were obese & 4.8% of pts were cachectic. There were significant differences between survival curves and median survival (months) for obese vs. non-obese vs. cachectic pts. (20 vs 10 vs. 7.9;P mer and current smokers had shorter median survival than never smokers (10.8 & 9.2 vs. 11.9;P model was former (HR 1.08;P mokers compared to never. The genus Pterostemon Schauer (Iteaceae), is a group of three species restricted in distribution to mexico. It includes: Pterostemon mexicanus Schauer, P. rotundifolius Ramírez, and P. bravoanus J. Jiménez-Ram. & martínez Gordillo. On the basis of field observations and herbarium specimens, we review the morphology (vegetative and reproductive), and distribution to give an updated taxonomic treatment for the genus. Additionally the utility of morphological characters is evaluated for taxomic use, and detailed taxonomic descriptions and ecological associations are given for each species.

The title compound, [N-(2-pyridylmethyl)-(L)-alanine]Co(III) thiocyanate (1) was obtained from the reaction of Co(OOCH3)2·H2O with the tridentate reduced Schiff base ligand, N-(2-pyridylmethyl)-(L)-alanine (L) and NH4SCN and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV-visible, TGA and single- crystal X-ray diffraction. Structural and spectroscopic analyses reveal [Co(L)2)]SCN to be monomeric with Cobalt(III) adopting a pseudo-octahedral geometry, coordinating to two reduce Schiff base ligands. In the crystal lattice, the thiocyanate anion forms an intermolecular SCN···HNamine hydrogen bond, while adjacent monomers are linked by intermolecular Ocarboxyl···HNamine···H-bonds to form a supramolecular network. This work is therefore undertaken in an attempt to construct coordination framework structures of varying properties using the mixed-ligand strategy involving reduced Schiff bases and the thiocyanate ion.

Assessment of Dietary Habits and Nutritional Status of Women of Childbearing Age in Cameroon: A Cross Sectional Study

Background: malnutrition due to poor feeding habits, is still a serious public health issue in Cameroon. The objective of this study was to assess the dietary patterns and nutritional status of women of childbearing age in various geographical settings in Cameroon so as to propose intervention strategies. methods: In a cross sectional study conducted from January 2014 to August 2015, women aged 14 - 49 years were randomly selected from the capital city Yaounde and four regions of Cameroon. Anthropometric measures were collected for nutritional status assessment. Data on diet habits and socio-demographic parameters were collected. Results: 608 women of reproductive age with average age 34.68 ± 0.39 years made up the study. Dietary patterns assessment revealed that, most study participants had a frequent intake of carbohydrate rich foods and fats and oils rich foods;but an infrequent intake of protein rich foods and vitamin and minerals rich foods in a week. Nutritional status assessment revealed that, 2.1% were underweight, 28.6% had a normal weight, 30.8% overweight, and 38.5% obese. The grass field regions presented the highest prevalence of underweight, overweight and obesity. Higher malnutrition levels were linked to low intakes of pulses and beans;milk and dairy products;vegetables and fruits food groups. Conclusion: Women of the study population had an unhealthy dietary pattern and a poor nutritional status. Therefore, strategies such as nutritional education are warranted and should be age and region specific, so as to target specific groups of women and ensure adequate nutritional status and health.
