Effec.s of Land Use on the Riparian Vegetation along the Njoro and Kamweti Rivers, Kenya

Riparian zones are valuable ec.systems. They ac. as the ec.logic.l engineers that improve river health by delivering a range of ec.system func.ions. They play a signific.nt role in river health and provide various ec.system goods and servic.s for human well-being. c.rrently, riparian areas are under threat due to intensive human ac.ivities suc. as agric.lture and urbanization, whic. alter riparian ec.system struc.ure and c.mposition. The main objec.ive of this study was to determine the effec. of adjac.nt land use on the struc.ure and diversity of the riparian vegetation in the Njoro and Kamweti Rivers. Along eac. river, three sampling sites were selec.ed within the major land use c.tegories whic. were;forest, agric.ltural and built-up areas. At eac. site, three 70 m long transec.s were established perpendic.lar to the river. The three plots were systematic.lly established, separated by a 5 m distanc. along eac. transec.. Forest c.nopy c.ver was estimated in perc.ntage. Njoro River riparian vegetation rec.rded a total of 145 plant spec.es from 40 families where trees and shrubs were dominant in the forest area, and herbs dominated the agric.ltural and built-up areas. In Kamweti River riparian area, a total of 110 spec.es from 45 families were enc.untered, in whic. trees dominated the forest area. A similar trend to the Njoro River was observed, in whic. herbs were dominant in the agric.ltural and built-up areas. In Njoro River, the Shannon diversity (H’) values ranged between 2.73 and 3.08 whereas Kamweti River riparian area values ranged from 2.59 to 3.40. At the level of P ≤ 0.05, T-Test revealed that there was no signific.nt differenc. in plant abundanc. and diversity between the two rivers, with F = 0.53;P = 0.51 and F = 2.71;P = 0.17. Montane forest ec.systems support biodiversity and provide varied ec.system servic.s to adjac.nt and downstream human c.mmunities. However, human-induc.d disturbanc.s are c.mmon in many of these ec.systems, threatening their c.pac.ty to sustain their func.ions. This study assessed the status of woody vegetation and livestoc. use of a Kenyan montane forest 10 years after government-sanc.ioned c.ssation of human enc.oac.ment. The findings c.n inform suitable interventions that support rec.very of abandoned forest settlements subjec.ed to c.ntinuous anthropogenic.disturbanc.s. Selec.ed woody vegetation attributes and livestoc. disturbanc. indic.tors were assessed ac.oss three human-driven disturbanc. regimes (light, moderate and heavy) using stratified-systematic.sampling tec.nique. Data on the extent of c.mmunity dependenc. on forest grazing were c.llec.ed from 381 randomly selec.ed forest adjac.nt households using semi-struc.ured questionnaires. Information on the palatability of plants to livestoc. was obtained from Foc.s Group Disc.ssions. Vegetation data were analyzed using linear mixed models, while desc.iptive analysis was applied on household survey data. A total of 33 woody plant spec.es belonging to 22 families were identified, out of whic. 55% were perc.ived to be unpalatable to livestoc.. Spec.es ric.ness, spec.es diversity, stem density and basal areas dec.ined signific.ntly with inc.easing levels of disturbanc.. Spec.fic.lly, these attributes were 59% - 98% lower in heavily disturbed sites than in moderately and lightly disturbed sites. A vast majority (88%) of the sampled households grazed their livestoc. in the forest throughout the year. Evidenc. from this study indic.tes that intense past and ongoing anthropogenic.disturbanc.s c.used signific.nt negative effec.s on the forest vegetation c.ndition, and lowered its c.pac.ty to rec.ver. Forest managers should prioritize minimizing rec.rrent anthropogenic.disturbanc.s as the forest rec.vers to ensure suc.

Seasonal variations and sourc.s of mass and c.emic.l c.mposition for PM_(10) aerosol in Hangzhou,c.ina

Aerosol observation was c.nduc.ed for four seasons from September 2001 to August 2002 at five sampling sites in Hangzhou, South c.ina, on PM10 mass, 22 elements （Na, Mg, AI, Si, P, S, K, c., Ti, V, c., Mn, Fe, Ni, c., Zn, As. Se, Br, c., Ba, and Pb）, 5 major ions （F^-, c.^ , NO3^-, SO4^2- , and NH4^＋）, and organic.and elemental c.rbon （Oc.and Ec., showing that PM10 mass ranged from 46.7 to 270.8 μg/m^3, with an annual average of 119.2 μg/m^3. Na, AI, Si, S, K, c., and Fe were the most abundant elements in PM10, most of S being in the form of SO4^2- . SO4^2-, NO3^-, and NH4^＋ were the major ions, whic. c.ntributed to about 20% of the PM10 mass. The mean seasonal c.nc.ntrations for SO4^2- , averaged over all sites, were found to be 18.0, 18.5, 24,Z and 21.4 μg/m^3, for spring, summer, autumn, and winter, respec.ively, while the c.rresponding loadings for NO3^- were 7.2, 4.7, 7.1, and 11.2 μg/m^3, and for NH4^＋ were 6.0, 5.9, 8.2, and 9.3 μg/m^3, in the form mostly of NH4NO3 in spring, autumn, and winter, and mostly of （NH4）2SO4 in summer. The low NO3^-/SO4^2- ratio found indic.tes c.al c.mbustion as the major sourc. throughout the year. The mean annual c.nc.ntrations of Oc.and Ec.in PM10 were found to be 21.4, and 4.1 μg/m^3, respec.ively. Material balanc. c.lc.lation indic.ted that fugitive dust, the sec.ndary aerosol, and c.rbonac.ous matter were the most abundant spec.es in PM10 for the four seasons, as is c.arac.eristic.for c.ties in South c.ina.

Size distributions of ambient aerosols at the Fresno Supersite were measured with four c.mmerc.ally available sc.nning mobility partic.e sizers （SMPS）. TSI nano, TSI standard, Grimm, and MSP instruments were c.lloc.ted at the Fresno Supersite and partic.e size distributions were measured c.ntinuously from August 18 through September 18, 2005. For partic.es with diameters between 10 and 200 nm, differenc.s among hourly-average ambient partic.e c.nc.ntrations ranged from 0% between the TSI nano and Grimm in the 30-50 nm size range to 39% between the Grimm and MSP in the 10-30 nm size range. MSP c.nc.ntrations were 10-33% lower than those measured with the TSI standard for partic.es smaller than 200 nm. The TSI nano and TSI standard agreed to within 5% in their overlapping size range （10-84 nm）. The TSI nano and Grimm agreed to within 40% for 5-10 nm partic.es.
