Uncovering the genetic diversity of Giardia intestinalis in isolates from outbreaks in New Zealand

Background:Giardia intestinalis is one of the most common causes of diarrhoea worldwide. Molecular techniques have greatly improved our understanding of the taxonomy and epidemiology of this parasite. Co-infection with mixed (sub-) assemblages has been reported, however, Sanger sequencing is sometimes unable to identify shared subtypes between samples involved in the same epidemiologically linked event, due to samples showing multiple dominant subtypes within the same outbreak. Here, we aimed to use a metabarcoding approach to uncover the genetic diversity within samples from sporadic and outbreak cases of giardiasis to characterise the subtype diversity, and determine if there are common sequences shared by epidemiologically linked cases that are missed by Sanger ***:We built a database with 1109 unique glutamate dehydrogenase (gdh) locus sequences covering most of the assemblages of G. intestinalis and used gdh metabarcoding to analyse 16 samples from sporadic and outbreak cases of giardiasis that occurred in New Zealand between 2010 and ***:There is considerable diversity of subtypes of G. intestinalis present in each sample. The utilisation of metabarcoding enabled the identification of shared subtypes between samples from the same outbreak. Multiple variants were identified in 13 of 16 samples, with Assemblage B variants most common, and Assemblages E and A present in mixed ***:This study showed that G. intestinalis infections in humans are frequently mixed, with multiple subtypes present in each host. Shared sequences among epidemiologically linked cases not identified through Sanger sequencing were detected. Considering the variation in symptoms observed in cases of giardiasis, and the potential link between symptoms and (sub-) assemblages, the frequency of mixed infections could have implications for our understanding of host–pathogen interactions.

This present study was conducted to evaluate the metabolic effects of isolated fi ber of carrot supplementation in *** properties of fi ber were *** groups were as follows:animals fed a standard diet,control group;high fi ber supplementation(70 mg);low fi ber supplementation(35 mg);for 12 *** samples were collected at the time of sacrifi *** weights of heart,liver,kidneys and spleen of the experimental rats with respect to body weight were *** kits were used to determine serum glucose concentration,lipid profi le(cholesterol,HDL-cholesterol,triglycerides),and the two main aminotransferases glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase(GOT)/glutamate-pyruvate transaminase(GPT).A histopathological assay was performed on the heart,liver,and spleen tissues of *** with fi ber favors weight loss in female((242.03±23.73)-(197.81±10.45)g);and male rats((262.50±32.21)-(213.96±12.56)g and induces a decrease in glucose levels in the supplemented *** the exception of total high-density lipoprotein cholesterol,the other lipid fractions decrease signifi cantly in rats *** supplementation did not induce changes in the dissected organs of the supplemented *** conclusion supplementation of fiber,improves glucose control,lower plasma lipid concentrations and reduced body weight in normal rats.

Changes in culm surface temperature with maturity of the bamboo species Guadua angustifolia

We used thermal images of bamboo culms of Guadua angustifolia Kunth to analyze the relationship between culm surface temperature and maturity, driven by the hypothesis that young culms may exhibit lower surface temperatures than old ones. The culm surface temperature shows small but constant differences between three age classes of 1, 2, and 3 years. Our findings indicate that surface temperature may be applied as an additional indi- cator to support the determination of maturity of guadua culms besides the visual assessment of the culms.

For a bipartite graph G on m and n vertices, respectively, in its vertices classes, and for integers s andt such that 2≤ s ≤ t, 0≤ m-s ≤ n-t, andre＋n≤ 2s＋t-1, we prove that if G has at least mn- （2（m - s）＋ n - t） edges then it contains a subdivision of the complete bipartite K（s,t） with s vertices in the m-class and t vertices in the n-class. Furthermore, we characterize the corresponding extremal bipartite graphs with mn- （2（m - s）＋ n - t ＋ 1） edges for this topological Turan type problem.

The effect of chemical composition and processing parameters on the formation of acicular ferrite and/or bainite has been *** particular,this paper deals with the influence that N through its combination with V,as V(C,N) precipitates,has on the decomposition of ***,the intragranular nucleation potency of V(C,N) precipitates is analyzed through the continuous cooling transformation diagrams (CCT) of two C-Mn-V steels with different contents of *** reported in this work allow us to conclude that acicular ferrite can only be achieved alloying with vanadium and nitrogen,meanwhile bainite is promoted in steels with a low level of *** is concluded that higher strength values are obtained in acicular ferrite than in bainitic steel but a similar brittle-ductile transition temperature (BDT),and lower values of impact absorbed energy (KV) has been recorded in nitrogen-rich steel.

Traditionally,food sustainability has been considered solely in the stage of agricultural ***,globalization,the expansion of the food production industry,and the emergence of supermarket chains that control the retail food market require specific significant changes in supply chains in the food sector and,therefore,we need to address the economic,social,and environmental impacts of these *** the other hand,social selling has increased rapidly in recent years,with a further boom,following current events related to the coronavirus disease(COVID-19).This explosion of social sales,where there are usually no control and regulation entities,can bring problems associated with mishandling *** this paper,we expose how Blockchain technology supports the traceability of social sales by validating the data provided by the chain participants such as digital health passports,production and transport data in the sale process;the proposed solution generates recommendations on productmanagement considering the agreements previously made by the network *** evaluate the proposed smart contracts,we useHyperledger Caliper,obtaining an average throughput of 12.6 transactions per second and an average latency of 0.3 s for the asset update *** also use a study case to evaluate the proposed project platform’s selling-transport stage using Internet of Things(IoT)sensors.

At least 20-40% of annual losses of avocado crops are caused by pathogenic *** chemical treatments of these diseases are inefficient,cause environmental pollution and are increasingly restricted by international *** work aimed to assess the biocontrol capacity of a bacterial extract to protect avocado fruits and plants from pathogen *** from the bacterial isolate Serratia ***5.1 were obtained from liquid fermentations in a biorreactor.A body rot postharvest infection model with Colletotrichum gloeosporioides on fruits was ***,packaging conditions were simulated using the bacterial extract and the commercial fungicide prochloraz as a positive ***,seedlings infections with Phytophthora cinnamomi were performed on two types of avocado(West Indian race and ***).The Area Under Disease Progress Curve(AUDPC) was recorded using the bacterial extract and a commercial product with fosetyl-aluminium as *** bacterial extract significantly reduced infections by *** on injured avocado fruits at 31.1 μg mL^-*** fruits were also protected against body rot infections at the same concentration and showed no significant differences with the commercial *** the other hand,AUDPC in the seedlings was significantly reduced with the extract treatment at 3 μg mL^-1 compared to the ***,a possible phytotoxicity effect of the extract was evidenced in the seedlings and confirmed by pathogen recovery and tests on Raphanus sativus ***,formulations of the extracts(emulsion and emulsifiable concentrate) were prepared,and bioactive stability was assessed for 8 *** emulsion formulates demonstrated very stable bioactivity against *** extract and the emulsion formulate showed promising results for the control of avocado *** bioproducts based on this type of active principles could be developed for the benefit of avocado industry.

Fast preparation route to high-performances textured Sr-doped Ca_3Co_4O_9 thermoelectric materials through precursor powder modification

This work presents a short and very efficient method to produce high performance textured Ca_3Co_4O_9 thermoelectric materials through initial powders modification. Microstructure has shown good grain orientation, and low porosity while slightly lower grain sizes were obtained in samples prepared from attrition milled powders. All samples show the high density of around 96% of the theoretical *** similar characteristics are reflected in, approximately,the same electrical resistivity and Seebeck coefficient values for both types of samples. However, in spite of similar power factor(PF) at low temperatures, it is slightly higher at high temperature for the attrition milled samples. On the other hand, the processing time reduction(from 38 to 2 h) when using attrition milled precursors, leads to lower mechanical properties in these samples. All these data clearly point out to the similar characteristics of both kinds of samples, with a drastic processing time decrease when using attrition milled precursors, which is of the main economic importance when considering their industrial production.

In the last few years,much more information on the anterolateral complex of the knee has become *** has now been demonstrated how it works in conjunction with the anterior cruciate ligament(ACL)controlling anterolateral rotatory *** studies have shown that the anterolateral complex(ALC)has a role as a secondary stabilizer to the ACL in opposing anterior tibial translation and internal tibial *** is of utmost importance that surgeons comprehend the intricate anatomy of the entire anterolateral aspect of the *** most studies have only focused on the anterolateral ligament(ALL),the ALC of the knee consists of a functional unit formed by the layers of the iliotibial band combined with the anterolateral joint *** interest has also been given to imaging evaluation using magnetic resonance and several studies have targeted the evaluation of the ALC in the setting of ACL *** are inconsistent with a lack of association between magnetic resonance imaging evidence of injury and clinical *** ACL reconstruction may not always reestablish knee rotatory stability in patients with associated ALC *** such cases,additional procedures,such as anterolateral reconstruction or lateral tenodesis,may be *** are several techniques available for ALL *** options include the iliotibial band,gracilis or semitendinosus tendon autograft,or allograft.
