This paper presents the development of the blood flow simulation in two dimensions over the real geometry of the femoral artery. The Navier-Stokes equations are solved using the finite element method, to obtain the distributions of the blood pressure and flow velocity in multiple instants of time and different places of the femoral artery and thus determine the current condition of the blood vessels. The velocity field shows a laminar behavior,where, the velocity is higher in the center of the artery and decreases as the blood flow approaches artery walls. In spite of all artery and blood flow properties not being considered, the values of pressure and velocity obtained are within the normal ranges. Finally the model is used to verify if there exist irregularities in the blood flow in both healthy subjects and sick patients.

Hatching asynchrony in birds is considered an adaptation to facilitate brood reduction because under conditions of food scarcity, the smallest nestling usually dies soon after hatching, thereby minimizing parental effort. However, in species with extreme hatching asynchrony, the last hatchlings paradoxically experience a very low probability of survival and death can take so long that it can hardly be considered an adaptation. Here, we propose and experimentally tested a new adaptive hypothesis explaining the brood reduction paradox, namely the“Male Manipulation Hypothesis”. Our hypothesis suggests that by inducing asynchronous hatching,females increase the feeding requirements of the brood, which will induce males to increase provisioning effort. In addition, females may extend the period of male manipulation by feeding the smallest nestling just enough to sustain life. Our study showed that male common blackbirds(Turdus merula) increased their effort(i.e., number of food items per hour) in experimental asynchronous broods compared to synchronous broods, while females reduced their contribution, as predicted by the hypothesis.

A high-current pulse forming network (PFN) has been developed for applications to artificial solar-wind generation. It is switched by staticinduction thyristor (SIThy) and is capable of generating pulsed current of ~9.7 kA for a time duration of ~1 ms. The SIThy switch module ismade that it can be controlled by an optical signal and it can be operated at elevated electrical potential. The experiments reported in this paperused two switch modules connected in series for maximum operating voltage of 3.5 kV. The experimental results have demonstrated a pulsedhigh-current generator switched by semiconductor devices, as well as the control and operation of SIThy for pulsed power application.

Spinal muscular atrophy(SMA)is caused by dysfunction of the alpha motor neurons of the spinal *** is an autosomal recessive disease associated to the SMN1 gene,located in the subtelomeric region of 5q13.A paralog SMN2 gene is located at the centromeric region of the same chromosome,which apparently originated by an ancestral inverted duplication occurring only in *** exon sequence differs in two nucleotides in exon 7 and exon 8,which leads to an SMN2 transcript that lacks exon 7 and results in a truncated ***(10%)of the SMN2 transcripts avoids the splicing of exon 7 but most of the copies are *** a disease scenario,the more SMN2 copies the higher possibility to restore at least partly the effects of SMN1 *** therapeutic approaches are being developed to increase the expression of *** determine the number of SMN1 and SMN2 copies,the methodology must distinguish accurately between both *** this work,we present the results obtained using multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification(MLPA)in 60 SMA suspected patients/carriers derived from different regions of *** 32 of these DNA samples we found alterations in *** these,16 presented a heterozygous deletion(carrier status)and 14 an homozygous deletion(patient status)in exon 7 and 8 of *** one case,exon 7 was found homozygously deleted but exon 8 presented a single copy,and in another case,exon 7 was found heterozygously deleted while exon 8 was *** half of the patients(7/15)presented a normal diploid number of SMN2 while the other half(8/15)presented an increased *** this work we showed how a probe-based methodology such as MLPA was able to distinguish between the paralog genes and determine the amount of copies in DNA samples from suspected patients/carriers of SMA.

AIM:To describe the safety and efficacy of patterned laser trabeculoplasty(PLT)as an adjunctive treatment in primary open angle glaucoma(POAG)and ocular hypertension(OHT)after 18-month follow-up in Hispanic ***:A single-center,retrospective study was *** patients with OHT or POAG undergoing PLT from June 2016 to August 2016 were included in the *** parameters were intraocular pressure(IOP),the number of IOP-lowering medications,best corrected visual acuity(BCVA),laser parameters and postoperative adverse *** efficacy outcome measures were the proportion of eyes achieving an IOP reduction≥20%at 18 mo versus baseline medicated IOP or a reduction in the number of medications while maintaining IOP ***:From 40 PLT-treated eyes(mean baseline IOP 20.3±1.7 mm Hg),24 patients were analyzed(age 63.4±7.3 y).The mean IOP reductions from baseline across visits(months 1,3,6,9,12,and 18)ranged from 14.1%to 20.8%.Success rate after 18-month follow-up was 61.7%with a mean IOP of 16±3.2 mm Hg(P<0.001).The number of glaucoma IOP-lowering medications per eye(preoperative 2.1±1.1 and postoperative 2.3±1.1,P=0.86)and the mean BCVA(preoperative 0.10±0.22 and postoperative 0.11±0.22 logMAR,P=0.42)remained *** events comprised transitory IOP spikes in 4 eyes(10%)and peripheral anterior synechiae in 7 eyes(17.5%).CONCLUSION:Mid-term results of PLT show that this procedure may be an efficacious and safe technique to approach medically uncontrolled OHT or POAG patients.

AIM:To determine if the presence H pylori or its viru- lence affect toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and TLR5 mRNA expression levels. METHODS:For the in vivo assays, gastric biopsies were obtained from 40 patients and H pylori status was determined. For the in vitro assays, human gastric adenocarcinoma mucosal cells (AGS) were cultured in the presence or absence of twelve selected H pylori strains. H pylori strains isolated from culture-positive patients and selected strains were genotyped for cagA and vacA. The cDNA was obtained from mRNA extracted from biopsies and from infected AGS cells. TLR4 and TLR5 mRNA levels were examined by real-time PCR. RESULTS: The presence of H pylori did not affect the mRNA levels of TLR4 or TLR5 in gastric biopsies. The mRNA levels of both receptors were not influenced by the vacA status (P > 0.05 for both receptors) andthere were no differences in TLR4 or TLR5 mRNA levels among the different clinical presentations/histological fi ndings (P > 0.05). In the in vitro assay, the mRNA levels of TLR4 or TLR5 in AGS cells were not influenced by the vacAs1 status or the clinical condition as-sociated with the strains (P > 0.05 for both TLR4 and TLR5). CONCLUSION: The results of this study show that the mRNA levels of TLR4 and TLR5 in gastric cells, both in vivo and in vitro, are independent of H pylori colonization and suggest that vacA may not be a significant player in the first step of innate immune recognition mediated by TLR4 or TLR5.

Effect of age on visual and refractive results after LASIK: mechanical microkeratome versus femtosecond laser

AIM: To evaluate the effect of age on visual and refractive results after laser in situ keratomileusis(LASIK) obtained with a mechanical microkeratome or a femtosecond ***: Retrospective, nonrandomized, cohort study. A total of 3826 eyes were included in the study(1725 eyes treated with mechanical LASIK and 2101 eyes treated with femtosecond LASIK). The relationship between patient age and the 3-month postoperative visual and refractive results of both procedures were analyzed by linear regression ***: Three months postoperatively, we found a significant correlation between age and the postoperative spherical equivalent(SE; r2=0.004, P=0.006), efficacy(r2=0.006, P=0.001), and safety indexes(r2=0.05, P=0.0001) in the mechanical LASIK group. On the other hand, we found a significant correlation between age and the postoperative SE(r2=0.02, P=0.0001) and the efficacy index(r2=0.01, P=0.0001) but not the safety index in the femtosecond laser group. Mechanical LASIK provided slightly but significantly better efficacy and predictability in patients 18 to 40 years of age and femtosecond LASIK did so in patients older than 40 years of age. The femtosecond laser provided better safety results than the mechanical microkeratome in both age groups. CONCLUSION: A tendency toward undercorrection and less predictability is found with aging after myopic LASIK regardless of whether the flap was created with a mechanical microkeratome or a femtosecond laser. However, femtosecond laser provides significantly betteroutcomes in terms of efficacy, safety and predictability compared to mechanical microkeratome for the correction of myopia in patients over 40 y.
