Early life investment in antlers and body growth reflects adult performance in roe deer population under supplementary feeding conditions

Recent research has challenged the idea that cervid antlers are such costly traits,supporting the assertion early-life antler investment is an honest signal of adult phenotypic quality.However,inferences were made based on antler measurements while growing(velvet)and thus,studies on fully-formed clean antlers are needed to avoid possible bias caused by the inter-individual variation in antler growth phenology.We studied a semi-captive population of European roe deer inhabiting a sub-Mediterranean area(Valsemana research station)and living under optimal conditions(ad libitum food supply and veterinary care).Based on repeated measurements taken from 146 individuals,we assessed whether allocation to secondary sexual traits during early life affected body mass or antler development during adulthood.Furthermore,we evaluated which body measurements better predicted future male quality.Additionally,using 488 individuals,we described age-class-specific variation in male body measurements and assessed the decline in antler size between adult and senescent stages(i.***.magnitude of senescence).Results agree with the assertion that there is no negative effect of a high investment in antler during early life on adult antler size or body mass,but we suggest the use of clean antlers as a more robust and reliable measure.The variables that better predicted body mass during adulthood were yearling body mass and body size at 6 months.Antler score between 10 and 18 months resulted in the best indicator of adult antler size.Finally,we support the idea that the magnitude of senescence in antler size is smaller in environments with higher resource availability during winter.

High penetration of renewable energy sources(RES)leads to new challenges for protection devices.Protection schemes are typically designed according to the dynamic behavior of rotating machines as generation sources,while the RES dynamic response,mainly governed by inverters,is not considered.Consequently,some relevant algorithms of transmission line protection are experiencing challenges because of the fact that magnitude and phase angle com-parison,amount of negative-sequence,and short-circuit current level are affected by the RES.Therefore,an in-depth study of this issue is necessary,one which considers the main causes and new methodological criteria solutions.This work presents an extensive literature review of the evaluation of electrical protection performance and the effects of RES connected to a power grid through inverters.Bibliographic data on many representative publications related to this topic are obtained to show the current research lines and their proposed solutions.In addition,this work identi-fies the main protection functions affected and describes the new protection schemes that consider RES.Finally,an analysis and discussion of the selected bibliography are presented.

Melanins represent one of the most ancient and important group of natural macromolecular pigments.They have multiple biological roles in almost all organisms across the Phyla,examples being photoprotection,anti-oxidative action,radical scavenger activity,and heavy metal removal.From the biomedical point of view,melanocytes are involved in the origin of melanoma tumors,and the main therapeutic advances for their treatment have been revised in Part 1 of this review.The chemical structure of eumelanin is a biological concern of great importance,and therefore,exploring theoretical molecular models and synthesis mechanisms will be here described,as well as molecular orbital features and supramolecular organization,which are responsible for the key properties that make these biological pigments so important,and so fascinating.Ultimately,this updated overview is devoted to describe present structural models and physico-chemical characteristics of eumelanin,in order to explain and utilize melanin properties on which new photothermal and ultrasonic protocols for melanoma treatment can be devised and applied.

Biodegradable Additive for the Construction Industry

This paper presents the patent of a new additive for the construction industry,which is obtained from the biomass residues of the wood industry.This additive is biodegradable and has fluidifying,foaming,plasticizing and stabilizing properties.When the additive is mixed with cement binder compositions,cement mortar and concrete,lightweight,flame-retardant cellular materials,thermal and acoustic insulators are obtained.

All Roads Lead to Auxin: Post-translational Regulation of Auxin Transport by Multiple Hormonal Pathways

Auxin is a key hormonal regulator,that governs plant growth and development in concert with other hormonal pathways.The unique feature of auxin is its polar,cell-to-cell transport that leads to the formation of local auxin maxima and gradients,which coordinate initiation and patterning of plant organs.The molecular machinery mediating polar auxin transport is one of the important points of interaction with other hormones.Multiple hormonal pathways converge at the regulation of auxin transport and form a regulatory network that integrates various developmental and environmental inputs to steer plant development.In this review,we discuss recent advances in understanding the mechanisms that underlie regulation of polar auxin transport by multiple hormonal pathways.Specifically,we focus on the post-translational mechanisms that contribute to fine-tuning of the abundance and polarity of auxin transporters at the plasma membrane and thereby enable rapid modification of the auxin flow to coordinate plant growth and development.

Bigger or long-winged male common crossbills exhibit redder carotenoid-based plumage coloration

Carotenoid-based ornaments are often considered reliable(honest)individual condition signals because their expression implies physiological costs unaffordable for low-quality animals(handicap signals).Recently,it has been suggested that efficient cell respiration is mandatory for producing red ketocarotenoids from dietary yellow carotenoids.This implies that red colorations should be entirely unfalsifiable and independent of expression costs(index signals).In a precedent study,male common crossbills,Loxia curvirostra,showing a red plumage reported higher apparent survival than those showing yellowish-orange colors.The plumage redness in this species is due to ketocarotenoid accumulation in feathers.Here,we correlated the male plumage redness(a 4-level visual score:yellow,patchy,orange,and red)and the body morphology in more than 1,ooo adult crossbills captured in 3 Iberian localities to infer the mechanisms responsible for color evolution.A principal component analysis summarized morphometry of 10 variables(beak,wing,tarsus length,etc.).The overall body size(PC1)and the length of flight feathers regarding body size(Pc3)showed significant positive relationships with plumage redness.Plumage redness was barely correlated with bill shape measures,suggesting no constraint in acquiring carotenoids from pine cones.However,large body sizes or proportionally long flying feathers could help carotenoid acquisition via social competition or increased foraging ranges.Proportionally longer flight feathers might also be associated with a specific cell respiration profile that would simultaneously favor flying capacities and enzymatic transformations needed for ketocarotenoid synthesis.Such a phenotypic profile would agree with the hypothesis of ketocarotenoid-based colors acting as individual quality index signals.

Data is becoming increasingly personal.Individuals regularly interact with a variety of structured data,ranging from SQLite databases on the phone to personal sensors and open government data.The“digital traces left by individuals through these interactions”are sometimes referred to as“small data”.Examples of“small data”include driving records,biometric measurements,search histories,weather forecasts and usage alerts.In this paper,we present a flexible protocol called LoRaCTP,which is based on LoRa technology that allows data“chunks”to be transferred over large distances with very low energy expenditure.LoRaCTP provides all the mechanisms necessary to make LoRa transfer reliable by introducing a lightweight connection setup and allowing the ideal sending of an as-long-as necessary data message.We designed this protocol as communication support for small-data edge-based IoT solutions,given its stability,low power usage,and the possibility to cover long distances.We evaluated our protocol using various data content sizes and communication distances to demonstrate its performance and reliability.

An unsupervised pattern recognition methodology based on factor analysis and a genetic-DBSCAN algorithm to infer operational conditions from strain measurements in structural applications

Structural Health Monitoring(SHM) suggests the use of machine learning algorithms with the aim of understanding specific behaviors in a structural system. This work introduces a pattern recognition methodology for operational condition clustering in a structure sample using the well known Density Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise(DBSCAN) algorithm.The methodology was validated using a data set from an experiment with 32 Fiber Bragg Gratings bonded to an aluminum beam placed in cantilever and submitted to cyclic bending loads under 13 different operational conditions(pitch angles). Further, the computational cost and precision of the machine learning pipeline called FA + GA-DBSCAN(which employs a combination of machine learning techniques including factor analysis for dimensionality reduction and a genetic algorithm for the automatic selection of initial parameters of DBSCAN) was measured. The obtained results have shown a good performance, detecting 12 of 13 operational conditions, with an overall precision over 90%.
