Mastoid obliteration and reconstruction techniques:A review of the literature

Objective To review the published literature related to the different obliteration and reconstruction techniques in the management of the canal wall down *** A PubMed(Medline)and LILACS databases as well as crossed references search was performed with the following Mesh terms:“cholesteatoma”,“cholesteatoma-middle ear”,“otitis media”,“otitis media,suppurative”,“mastoiditis”,“mastoidectomy”,“canal wall down mastoidectomy”,“radical mastoidectomy”,“mastoid obliteration”and crossed *** criteria were adult patients subject to mastoid cavity obliteration and posterior canal wall *** technique and materials used,anatomic and functional results,complications,recurrence rates,and changes in quality of life,were analyzed.A total of 94 articles were screened,38 were included for full-text detailed *** Twenty-one articles fulfilled the inclusion *** and materials used for canal wall reconstruction,tympanoplasty,and ossiculoplasty were varied and included autologous,biosynthetic,or *** results were reported in 16 studies and were *** studies reported improvement in the quality of life using the GBI ***-up time ranged from 1 to 83 *** articles used imaging studies to evaluate postoperative disease *** highest recurrence rate reported for cholesteatoma after obliteration was 19%.The most frequently reported complications were retraction pockets and transient *** Plenty of techniques combining grafts and other materials have been used to overcome mastoidectomy cavity *** far,it is still not possible to standardize an ideal *** available level of evidence for this topic is low and limited.

Amphibians and Reptiles of Luzon Island, Philippines: the Herpetofauna of Pantabangan-Carranglan Watershed, Nueva Ecija Province, Caraballo Mountain Range

We present detailed species accounts for fifty-nine(59) species of amphibians and reptiles(17 frogs, 14 skinks, 3 agamids, 6 gekkonid lizards, 2 varanids, and 17 snakes) from Pantabangan-Carranglan Watershed, which lies within the Caraballo Mountain Range, whose biota is poorly-known. This was also the first extensive survey of herpetofauna within the watershed. Together with data from previous literature reviews, our records bring the total number of species of amphibians and reptiles for the Caraballo Mountain Range to 66. Forty-two(42) species from the area were Philippine endemics, with 25 species recorded only from Luzon faunal region. Seven species of herpetofauna are associated with unresolved taxonomic issues(new species and species complexes needing taxonomic partitioning, e.g. splitting of species groups). Two species recorded from the area were rarely represented in museum collections. Major distributional and elevational range extensions were recorded for several species. Comparison with Luzon’s other mountain ranges showed that the Caraballo Mountain Range is similar, in terms of species composition, to the northern Sierra Madre and Cordillera Mountain Ranges. The result of this survey showed the Caraballo Mountain Range and its mountains as a possible new center of herpetofaunal diversity and endemicity within Luzon. The importance of the Caraballo Mountain Range as an important biogeographic link merits further study.

AIM:To examine the detection rate of viable Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis(MAP) in patients with inflammatory bowel disease [Crohn's disease(CD) and ulcerative colitis(UC)].METHODS:Thirty patients with CD(15 with at least one NOD2/CARD15 mutation),29 with UC,and 10 with no inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).were tested for MAP by polymerase chain reaction(specific IS900 fragment) and blood ***:MAP DNA was detected in all original blood samples and 8-wk blood cultures(CD,UC and non-IBD).Positive MAP DNA status was confirmed by dot blot *** 69 cultures were negative by acid-fast Ziehl-Neelsen *** MAP,in spheroplast form,was isolated from the 18-mo blood cultures of all 30 CD patients,one UC patient,and none of the non-IBD *** association was found between positive MAP cultures and use of immunosuppressive drugs or CDassociated single nucleotide ***:MAP is widely present in our area and MAP DNA can be recovered from the blood of CD,UC and non-IBD ***,MAP spheroplasts were only found in CD patients.

Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis function during perinatal depression

Abnormal function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal （HPA） axis is an important pathological finding in pregnant women exhibiting major depressive disorder. They show high levels of cortisol pro- inflammatory cytokines, hypothalamic-pituitary peptide hormones and catecholamines, along with low dehydroepiandrosterone levels in plasma. During pregnancy, the TH2 balance together with the immune system and placental factors play crucial roles in the development of the fetal allograft to full term. These factors, when altered, may generate a persistent dysfunction of the HPA axis that may lead to an overt transfer of cortisol and toxicity to the fetus at the expense of reduced activity of placental 1113-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2. Epigenetic modifications also may contribute to the dysregulation of the HPA axis. Affective disorders in pregnant women should be taken seriously, and therapies focused on preventing the deleterious effects of stressors should be implemented to promote the welfare of both mother and baby.

Subterranean estuaries are highly dynamic in processing dissolved inorganic nitrogen(DIN).Here we investigate DIN turnover in surface sediments(0–20 cm depth)at the higher,medium and lower intertidal of a seepage face,i.e.,the outer “mouth”of the subterranean estuary,during four consecutive seasons in Sanggou Bay,*** the studied period,ammonium(NH_(4)^(+))and nitrite(NO_(2)^(-))concentrations in the sampled porewaters did not vary significantly with depth or *** contrast,peaks in porewater nitrate(NO_(3)^(-))concentration and decreases in δ^(15)N-NO_(3)^(-) and δ^(18)O-NO_(3)^(-) were observed in the 15–20 cm depth(bottom)sediment,particularly during summer and *** with NO_(3)^(-) production,the sediment total nitrogen was also markedly peaking in the bottom layer of the studied seepage *** with abundant heterotrophic microbes in the sediment,this NO_(3)^(-) accumulation was linked to a reaction chain including organic matter decomposition,ammonification and *** winter,porewater enrichment in total nitrogen occurred closer to the surface of the seepage face but triggered also active NO_(3)^(-) *** pattern reinforced the importance of pelagic organic matter supply on NO_(3)^(-) *** the shallower depths of the seepage face(<12 cm),active net NO3removal occurred except in *** isotopic fractionation(δ^(15)N-NO_(3)^(-) and δ^(18)O-NO_(3)^(-) and metagenomic results revealed denitrification as the main pathway for NO_(3)^(-) *** assimilation from benthic primary producers may also consume a fraction of NO_(3)^(-) at the sediment water *** NO_(3)^(-) production and removal significantly varied in magnitude with season(13.6 to 6.2 nmol cm^(-3)h^(-1)).Substrate supply was the key driver for nitrate cycling,as evidenced by the high NO3production rate in spring by comparison to *** highest NO_(3)^(-) turnover rates were found in summer,suggesting the comb

Growth and development of komatsuna (<i>Brassica rapa</i>L. Nothovar) in NFT (nutrient film technique) system, as influenced by natural mineral

The cultivation of komatsuna (Brassica rapa L. Nothovar) was carried out hydroponically using a nutrient film technique (NFT) system inside a greenhouse, applying a quartz porphyry (QP) treated nutrient solution. Quartz porphyry is a natural mineral containing many substances that easily ionize with water to improve water quality. Different growth attributes of komatsuna such as leaf length, leaf width and plant fresh weight increased in plants that received QP treated nutrient solution. The coefficient of variation was smaller for QP treated nutrient solution plants when compared to the control. High light intensity, long duration of solar radiation and higher temperatures in the summer (July-Aug.) promoted plant growth compare to winter (Dec.-Feb.). In contrast, plants grown in the winter accumulated more fresh weight compare to plants grown in the summer. Results also showed that the rapid exchange of ion in the nutrient solution due to the QP treatment enabled the solution to maintain the ion balance, and thus plants grew uniformly and vigorously. The cations Na+ and Ca2+ and the anions Cl- and were dominant and made the media saline. There was a decrease of Na+ ion concentration in the recirculating nutrient solution (NFT) due to ion exchange by QP. Results suggest that water treatment with QP could be used for production of high quality vegetables.

Challenges and Needs of National Swimming Federations in the Promotion of Health

This study focuses on the current challenges faced by the National Swimming Federations （NFs） with respect to challenges and needs of their NFs in the promotion of health in their domestic population and elite athletes. A descriptive transversal survey was circulated among the FINA NFs requesting information regarding these challenges and needs. The response rate was 64.9% （135 of the 208 NFs）. A similarity study was conducted （pairing measures method of Rogers-Tanimoto） to obtain 8 groups of NFs organized according to the degree to which their responses were similar to those of the other NFs. The lack of financial resources （95%） was identified as the most significant barrier to health promotion among the NFs. The least common challenges faced by the NFs were the relative importance of swimming as a sport （52%） and the lack of evidence based and best practice guidelines （51%）. Conclusion： Although many NFs face some common barriers to promoting health, those barriers are more significant in some NFs. Therefore, the means to overcome them will vary from NF to NF.

Hyperpycnal (over density) flows and deposits

A hyperpycnal flow forms when a relatively dense land-derived gravity flow enters into a marine or lacustrine water reservoir. As a consequence of its excess of density, the incoming flow plunges in coastal areas, generating a highly dynamic and often long-lived dense underflow. Depending on the characteristics of the parent flow(flow duration and flow rheology) and basin salinity, the resulting deposits(hyperpycnites) can be very *** to flow duration, land-derived gravity flows can be classified into short-lived or long-lived flows. Shortlived gravity flows last for minutes or hours, and are mostly related to small mountainous river discharges, alluvial fans, collapse of natural dams, landslides, volcanic eruptions, j?kulhlaups, etc. Long-lived gravity flows last for days,weeks or even months, and are mostly associated with medium-to large-size river *** the rheology of the incoming flow, hyperpycnal flows can be initiated by non-Newtonian(cohesive debris flows), Newtonian supercritical(lahars, hyperconcentrated flows, and concentrated flows) or Newtonian subcritical flows(pebbly, sandy or muddy sediment-laden turbulent flows). Once plunged, non-Newtonian and Newtonian supercritical flows require steep slopes to accelerate, allow the incorporation of ambient water and develop flow transformations in order to evolve into a turbidity current and travel further basinward. Their resulting deposits are difficult to differentiate from those related to intrabasinal turbidites. On the contrary, long-lived Newtonian subcritical flows are capable of transferring huge volumes of sediment, freshwater and organic matter far from the coast even along gentle or flat slopes. In marine settings, the buoyant effect of interstitial freshwater in pebbly and sandy hyperpycnal flows can result in lofting due to flow density reversal.
