Polygynous males can change their mating tactics across their lifetime, but information is scarce on the flexibility of this trait within a given season and the relative costs and benefits of using different tactics. Here, we monitored individually marked male reindeer Rangifer tarandus and classified their mating tactics as harem-defense, sneaking, or mixed. The costs of the male reproductive effort were assessed using both direct （i.e. percentage of body mass lost） and indirect measures （i.e. activity patterns such as feeding, standing, and walking）, while mating group size and reproductive success were recorded as mating ef- fort benefits. Our results show that reindeer males may switch between the harem-defense and sneaking tactics throughout the same breeding season, providing further support to the notion that reproductive tactics are flexible in ungulates. The costs and benefits of male mating effort vary according to the mating tactic, reaching the highest values in harem-holders and the lowest values in sneaking males. Moreover, males who switched between the sneaking tactic and the harem-defence tactic tended to achieve higher mating success than males who consistently used the least costly tactic. Indeed, all harem-holders successfully sired offspring, whereas only two out of three mixed-tactic males sired one calf, and sneaking males did not sire any calves. In conclusion, our results show that reindeer males can modulate their mating efforts during the same breeding season by switching between the most costly harem-defense tactic and the least costly sneaking tactic, suggesting individual solutions to the balance between reproductive effort and mating opportunities [Current Zoology 61 （5）： 802-810, 2015].

Effect of Age at First Calving on First Lactation Milk Yield in Holstein Cows from Costa Rican Specialized Dairy Herds

In order to determine the effect of age at first calving (AFC) at 305-d milk yield, a historical prospective longitudinal study of 46,029 pure specialized dairy Costa Rican Holstein animals was carried out between 2000 and 2010. Data on purebred specialized dairy Holstein cows enrolled in the program VAMPP Bovino 3.0 were included. Information was analyzed by using descriptive statistics and mixed linear models. The effect of the AFC was adjusted to the ecological zone, season of birth, year of birth, inbreeding index, and type of parturition and parity number of the dam at birth. The average AFC for the animals that were part of the study was 30.7 mo (SD: 6.8, 95% CI: 30.6 - 30.7). The average total milk production in the first lactation was5188.0 kg(95% CI: 5153.4 - 5223.2), whereas the 305-d corrected milk yield resulted in5288 kg(95% CI: 5253.7 - 5323.2). Cows with AFC less than 26 mo and between 26.0 and 33.6 mo, produced -354.8 kg/305-d (P < 0.0001) and -105.6 kg/305-d (P = 0.0117) respectively, compared with cows calving over 33.6 mo. It is likely that the observed effect of the AFC on the topmost dairy lactation affects the productive life of the cow within the herd. Further studies are required to prove this hypothesis.

Control in Beach and Dune Sands of the Gulf of Mexico and the Role of Nearby Rivers

A sedimentological, petrographic, and geochemical study of beach, dune, and river sands was carried out along the northwestern Gulf of Mexico. The main goal of this work is to show how beach and dune sands are controlled texturally, compositionally, and chemically by the nearby rivers for each beach location using a particle size analyser, a polarized microscope, a X-ray fluorescence and ICP mass spectrometer to obtain the following: grain-size values from one river (Carrizal River) are similar in range to their counterpart beach sands but not similar to the dune sands (Barra del Tordo). Rivers (Panuco and Carrizal) are compositionally controlling the quartz and feldspar contents of their counterpart beach and dune sands (i.e., Playa Miramar and Barra del Tordo). Rivers (Soto La Marina River) are directly influencing the composition of the beach sands (La Pesca) based upon the total quartz content, beach and dune sands. The concentration of magnetite grain fractions (Barra del Tordo beach and dune sands) is not under the influence of the nearby river (Carrizal River). In this case the compositional influence of beach and dune sands is related to sediment discharges by other fluvial systems, redistribution of the beach and dune sands along the coast and deflation/winnowing of light minerals. The Eu positive anomaly in the beach and dune sands from the three sites (i.e. Playa Miramar, Barra del Tordo, La Pesca) is linked to an increase in the P(plagioclase)/K(potash feldspar) ratio. The (La/Lu)cn highest ratio for river sands (Carrizal River) suggests quartz enrichment compared to their beach and dune sands counterparts. The (Gd/Yb)cn ratio for one river (i.e., Carrizal River) indicates that it is low in heavy rare earth elements. HREE compared to their beach and dune sands counterparts indicates less concentration of heavy minerals as potential carriers of HREE seawards.

Critical limb ischemia is a medical condition that decreases blood flow and limb oxygen supply;this disease in its late stages of progression leads to only two possible options: either surgical bypass revascularization or limb amputation. We investigated a novel method using autologous transplantation of progenitor cells derived from mobilized peripheral blood bone marrow mononuclear cells to evaluate its long-term effect as a cell therapy to induce neo-angiogenesis and restore blood flow in the affected ischemic limbs. A total of 20 ischemic limbs from critical limb ischemia diagnosed patients, non candidates to surgical revascularization were transplanted with autologous progenitor cells by either intramuscular combined with intravenous (group A) or intramuscular (group B) procedure. Patients were monitored during 31 months. Treatment efficacy was evaluated according to the following parameters: ankle brachial index which increased at a range of 0.29-1.0 in group A and 0.40-0.90 in group B;pain-free walking distance which increased at a range of 50-600 m in group A and 50-300 m in group B;and blood perfusion (measured by Laser Doppler) which increased at a range of 48-299 in group A and 135-225 in group B. We achieved 90% treated ischemic limbs free of amputation in both transplanted groups. Results here described provide a safe, efficient and minimally invasive therapy with progenitor cells to induce angiogenesis and preserve limbs from amputation in CLI diagnosed patients.

Objective: To determinate the recovery of total polyphenolic compounds content,in vitro antioxidant activity and HPLC/ESI/MS characterization of extract from Nephelium lappaceum L.(Mexican rambutan).Methods: The rambutan husk extract was obtained by aqueous extraction and a polyphenolic fraction was recovered using Amberlite XAD-16. The total polyphenolic compounds content was determined by the Folin Ciocalteu and butanol-HCI *** vitro antioxidant activity was performed using ABTS and ferric reducing antioxidant power ***: Mexican rambutan husk showed a total polyphenolic content of 582 mg/g and an evident antioxidant activity by ABTS and ferric reducing antioxidant power *** HPLC/ESI/MS assay allowed the identification of 13 compounds, most of which belong to ellagitannins. Geraniin, corilagin and ellagic acid were present in the sample;the mineral composition was also ***: Rambutan husk cultivated in Mexico is a promising source for the recovery of added value bioactive compounds with antioxidant activity, which have potential applications as bioactive antioxidant agents for the treatment of diseases.

为了回应1910年墨西哥革命后大众的需求^([1]),胡安·奥戈尔曼(juan O'Gorman)构建了一系列的学术主张。其中最早提出的是一种严格的建筑功能主义。后来,他发现这种主张是无法实现的,因为建筑毕竟还是需要依靠美学判断,更糟糕的是其主张被墨西哥城投机的开发商所利用。这直接导致了他在1936年放弃建筑转而从事绘画。20世纪40年代晚期重返建筑后,他开始寻求与场地中的文脉要素对话,并通过转向与整体造型艺术^([2])的结合,在更大的范围内寻求与社会政治的对话。然而,由于无法解决纯粹的功能性与向大众传递清晰的社会信息^([3])之间的矛盾,他再次放弃了建筑职业,并开始尝试以绘画形式与墨西哥宏大历史展开对话。
