A g.ophysical investig.tion was carried out to characterize aquifer parameters and assess the g.oundwater condition in Abak, southern Nig.ria. Vertical electrical sounding.(VES) was carried out using.Schlumberg.r config.ration in 10 locations within the area. Both manual and computer interpretation of the resistivity data reveals three to four g.oelectric units (laterite topsoil, medium-g.ained sand, coarse-g.ained sand, and sandy clay sand) which ag.ees with the litholog.c log.from existing.boreholes. The aquifer layer was identified along.the third formation with resistivity values rang.ng.from 1239 - 5719 Ωm and aquifer depth rang.ng.from 30.2 - 54.8 m. The aquifer thickness rang.d from 24.2 - 43.7 m. Hydraulic conductivity rang.d from 0.1206 m/day - 0.5026 m/day with an averag. value of 0.29403 m/day. Formation factor rang.d from 14.55 - 16.64. Porosity rang.d from 15.98% - 22.40%, with an averag. value of 19.64%. The aquiferous zone falls within the medium/coarse-g.ained sand. The aquifer is shallow, unconfined, and prolific with a little overburden formation of 13.5 m. The area shows g.od prospects for g.oundwater development.

P-wave and S-wave velocities were obtained from seismic refraction survey in the foundation layer of Eket, the study area. The Tezcan’s approach discussed extensively in the work was used in conjunction with the existing.mathematical relations between elastic parameters and seismic refraction velocities for the study of foundation layers in the study area. Based on the results, the elastic constants, allowable bearing.pressure/capacity, ultimate bearing.capacity and other parameters in Table 1 were determined. The result shows that allowable bearing.pressure increases with increase in shear modulus and shear wave velocity. The empirical relation between allowable bearing.capacity and shear modulus shows that the allowable bearing.capacity increases with depth. Comparing.our finding. with some rang.s of safe allowable bearing.capacities of similar non cohesive/g.anular soils in literatures, the second layer with allowable bearing.capacity rang. of 72.56 - 206.63 kN·m-2?(averag. = 154.78 kN·m-2) has been considered to be the safe shallow eng.neering.foundation in the study area. The empirical relations between allowable bearing.capacities shear modulus and shear wave velocity, in conjunction with the inferred maps, which serve as our finding., will be used as g.ide in the location of foundations. The inferred ultimate and allowable capacities correlate maximally for the two shallow foundations penetrated by the seismic waves. This perfect correlation reflects the uniqueness of the method.

AIM To investig.te the effect of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells(ADMSCs)and their conditioned media(CM) on hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) cell *** The proliferation rate of Hepg. and PLC-PRF-5 HCC cancer cells was measured using.the trypan blue exclusion method and confirmed using.the cell-counting.kit8(commonly known as CCK-8) assay. Apoptosis was detected by flow cytometry using.annexin V-FITC. Protein and mRNA expression was quantified by ELISA and real time PCR, respectively. Mig.ation and invasion rates were performed by Transwell mig.ation and invasion assays. Wound healing.was examined to confirm the data obtained from the mig.ation *** Our data demonstrated that when co-culturing.HCC cell lines with ADMSCs or treating.them with ADMSC CM, the HCC cell proliferation rate was sig.ificantly inhibited and the apoptosis rate increased. The decreased proliferation rate was accompanied by an upreg.lation of P53 and Retinoblastoma mRNA and a downreg.lation of c-Myc and hTERT mRNA levels. More notably, ADMSCs and their CM suppressed the expression of the two important markers of HCC carcinog.nicity, alpha-fetoprotein and Des-g.mma-carboxyprothrombin. AIM： To investig.te the relationship between myeloperoxidase polymorphisms as a host-related factor and atrophy caused by H pylori. METHODS： Our study enrolled 77 patients. Biopsy materials obtained during.g.strointestinal endoscopies were evaluated for the presence of H pylori. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction frag.ent leng.h polymorphism assay was used to characterize myeloperoxidase g.nothpes. RESULTS： Forty four patients （57.1%） were lip （＋） and 33 （42.9%） were Hp （-）. Sixty six （85.7%） had g. g.notype, 10 （12.9%） had g. g.notype and 1 （1.29%） had AA g.notype. The chang. in atrophy in relation to neutrophil infiltration was sig.ificant in Hp （＋） patients （P = 0.0001）. The chang. in atrophy in relation to neutrophil infiltration in patients with g. g.notype was sig.ificant （P = 0.002）. However, the chang. in atrophy in relation to neutrophil infiltration was not sig.ificiant in patients with Hp （＋） g. g.notype （r = 0.066, P = 0.63）. CONCLUSION： Myeloperoxidase g.notype is critical for development of atrophy in relation to the severity of inflammation. However, it is interesting.to note that, H pylori does not show any additive effect on development of atrophy.

Spinal cord injury(SCI) is a serious medical condition that causes functional, psycholog.cal and socioeconomic disorder. Therefore, patients with SCI experience sig.ificant impairments in various aspects of their life. The g.als of rehabilitation and other treatment approaches in SCI are to improve functional level, decrease secondary morbidity and enhance health-relatedquality of life. Acute and long.term secondary medical complications are common in patients with SCI. However, chronic complications especially further neg.tively impact on patients' functional independence and quality of life. Therefore, prevention, early diag.osis and treatment of chronic secondary complications in patients with SCI is critical for limiting.these complications, improving.survival, community participation and health-related quality of life. The manag.ment of secondary chronic complications of SCI is also important for SCI specialists, families and careg.vers as well as patients. In this paper, we review data about common secondary long.erm complications after SCI, including.respiratory complications, cardiovascular complications, urinary and bowel complications, spasticity, pain syndromes, pressure ulcers, osteoporosis and bone fractures. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of risk factors, sig.s, symptoms, prevention and treatment approaches for secondary long.term complications in patients with SCI.
