Seasonal size-segregated PM10 and PAH concentrations in a rural area of.sugarcane agriculture versus a coastal urban area in Southeastern f.orida, USA

Airborne particulate matter （PM） is of.health and environmental concern not only in highly urbanized areas, but also in rural areas that are used f.r intensive agricultural purposes, In this study, PM size- segregated samples were collected simultaneously f.r 12 months in a small town （Belle Glade, f.orida）, which is the center of.a vast sugarcane growing area and at Delray Beach, a coastal city in Palm Beach County, f.orida. During the winter sampling period, when sugarcane f.liage is burned just bef.re harvest- ing to reduce the amount of.plant matter to be handled, PM10 levels were 50% or higher than otherwise measured, indicating that sugarcane harvesting and processing is a major local source f.r PM10. f.r the rest of.the year, PM10 levels at both sites are similar, suggesting that ambient PM levels at both sites are impacted by the major urban centers in Southern f.orida. During late July and early August, the PM10 levels at both sites were substantially elevated and revealed the typical red-brownish color of.Saharan dust. This has been reported to occur f.equently with suitable meteorological conditions over the Atlantic Ocean coupled with a Sahara dust storm event. During the sugarcane harvesting season at Belle Glade, the concentrations of.PAHs associated with PM10 were up to 15 times higher than those measured during the summer growing season, indicating a substantially higher exposure of.the rural population to these of.en mutagenic and carcinogenic compounds.

Merging bound states in the continuum in an open acoustic resonator

Bound states in the continuum （BICs） are perf.ctly localized resonances despite embedding in the continuum ***,an isolated BIC is very sensitive to the structure ***,we report merging acoustic BICs in a single open resonator,robust against the structure *** f.nd that both symmetry-protected BIC and f.iedrich-Wintgen BIC are sustained in a single coupled waveguide-resonator *** varying the height and length of.the resonator,these two BICs move toward each other and merge into a single one at a critical *** to an individual BIC,the merged BIC is robust against f.brication error because its Q-f.ctor is proportional to ΔL-4,whereΔL embodies the structure *** essence of.this extraordinary phenomenon is perf.ctly explained by the two-and three-level approximations of.the ef.ective nonHermitian ***,we present direct experimental demonstrations of.the moving and merging of.BICs in a coupled 3D waveguide-resonator,which are evidenced by the vanishing of.the linewidth of.f.no resonance in the transmission *** results may f.nd exciting applications in designing high-quality acoustic sources,sensors and f.lters.

Reaction Kinetics of.Ozonation of.Trichloroethylene and Benzene in Gas and Liquid Phases

The kinetics of.ozonation reactions of.trichloroethylene (TCE) and benzene in gas and liquid phases at 101.3 kPa and 298 K was investigated in this paper. The ozonation of.TCE is f.rst order with respect to the ozone concentration and one and half.order to TCE in the gas phase with the average rate constant 57.30 (mol·L-1)-1.5·s-1, and the TCE ozonation in aqueous medium is f.rst order with respect to both ozone and trichloroethylene with the average rate constant 6.30 (mol·L-1)-1·-1. The ozonation of.benzene in the gas phase is f.rst order in ozone but independent of.the benzene concentration with the average reaction rate constant 0.0011s-1. The overall kinetics of.reaction between ozone and benzene in aqueous solution is f.und to be f.rst order with one-half.order in both ozone and bezene, with the average reaction rate constant 2.67s-1. It is f.und that the ozonation rate of.pallutants is much quicker than that of.self.decomposition of.ozone in both gas and aqueous phase.

Rolling route f.r ref.ning grains of.super light Mg-Li alloys containing Sc and Be

Pioneering work on Sc or/and Be added Mg-Li alloys with ref.ned grains was initiated. Various rolling-based thermo-mechanical treatments on these Mg-Li alloys were carried out. f.ur Mg-Li alloys were prepared by vacuum melting process. A unique route f.r producing f.ne grains was applied which concluded solution treatment at 350 ℃, cold rolling with 60% thickness reduction and 250 ℃ annealing, successively.

Regulatory T cells （Tregs） expressing f.rkhead/winged-helix transcription f.ctor f.xp3 represent a distinct lineage of.lymphocytes which play a central role in protecting the host f.om autoimmune diseases. However, Tregs also pose a major problem to anti-tumor immunity. Growing body of.evidence f.om both laboratory and clinical investigations has demonstrated that expansion and accumulation of.these immunosuppressive cells correlates with advanced tumor growth and predicts poor disease prognosis. How tumor development subverts normal self.tolerance f.nction of.Tregs thereby thwarts host anti-tumor immunity remains elusive. This review will discuss our current knowledge in understanding the dynamics and plasticity of.f.xp3~ Treg activation and induction in tumor bearing hosts and their interaction with various antigen presenting cells （APCs） in tumor microenvironment leading to the establishment of.active local and systemic immune suppression. Blind Signal Reception in Downlink Generalized Spatial Modulation Multiuser MIMO System Based on Minimum Output Energy

This paper considers downlink multiuser multiple-input-multiple-output system with parallel spatial modulation scheme, in which base station transmitter antennas are separated into K groups corresponding to K user terminals. Generalized spatial modulation is employed, in which a subset(more than single antenna) of.transmit antenna array are activated and the activating pattern corresponds to specif.c spatial symbol. Dif.erent f.om existing precoding-based algorithms, we develop a two-stage detection scheme at each user terminal: In the pre-processing stage, a minimax algorithm is proposed to identif. the indices of.active antennas, where the key idea is that the minimum output energy of.the detector is maximized; A constrained minimum output energy algorithm is proposed in the post-processing stage to mitigate multiuser interf.rence and extract temporal symbols. Compared with existing precoding-based algorithms, the complexity is signif.cantly reduced. Moreover, the proposed algorithm is semi-blind,in which only a small subset of.channel state inf.rmation is required to identif. active antennas as well as eliminate multiuser interf.rence. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is near-f.r resistant and the spectral ef.iciency is extensively increased compared to the conventional spatial modulation scheme.

Prediction of.Soil Depth f.om Digital Terrain Data by Integrating Statistical and Visual Approaches

Inf.rmation about the spatial distribution of.soil attributes is indispensable f.r many land resource management applications; however, the ability of.soil maps to supply such inf.rmation f.r modern modeling tools is questionable. The objectives of.this study were to investigate the possibility of.predicting soil depth using some terrain attributes derived f.om digital elevation models （DEMs） with geographic inf.rmation systems （GIS） and to suggest an approach to predict other soil attributes. Soil depth was determined at 652 f.eld observations over the A1-Muwaqqar Watershed （70 km2） in Jordan. Terrain attributes derived f.om 30-m resolution DEMs were utilized to predict soil depth. The results indicated that the use of.multiple linear regression models within small watershed subdivisions enabled the prediction of.soil depth with a dif.erence of.50 cm f.r 77% of.the f.eld observations. The spatial distribution of.the predicted soil depth was visually coincided and had good correlations with the spatial distribution of.the classes amalgamating three terrain attributes, slope steepness, slope shape, and compound topographic index. These suggested that the modeling of.soil-landscape relationships within small watershed subdivisions using the three terrain attributes was a promising approach to predict other soil attributes.

Modelling of.Gettering by Mechanical Damage of.Metallic Impurities in Silicon

Reducing the concentration of.the metallic impurities present in silicon-based electronic components plays a vital role in manuf.ctures. Gettering by induced mechanical damage is one of.the methods used in neutralizing these impurities. To simulate this type of.gettering, we explicitly include the role of.the traps due to mechanical damage, based on the mechanism of.kick-out. In our model, we choose the essential parameters including concentration of.impurities, thickness, temperature, time, etc. The dif.usion coef.icient and equilibrium concentration of.the silicon interstitials estimated f.om the literature have been adjusted to be in good agreement with the experimental data.
