INTRODUCTION Liver cancer,primary hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)or hepatoma has become the third leading cause of death from cancer worldwide.[1,2]In 2008,the GLOBOCAN reported 746,300 new cases of HCC diagnosed worldwide with 695,900 HCC-related deaths and a 1.07 incidence to mortality ratio making it the third most fatal cancer world-wide with the vast majority(84%)of cases concentrated in the developing countries in Asia and Africa.[2,3]HCC is a disparate cancer preferentially afflicting the middle to lower socio-economic segment of the world.[4]The economic cost of HCC is staggering with global expense estimated at$895.2 billion a year only followed by cardiac($753.2 billion)and cerebrovascular disease($298.2 billion).

AIM To evaluate the effect of body mass index(BMI) on short-term functional outcome and complications in primary total knee arthroplasty. METHODS All patients undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty at a single institution between 2007 and 2013 were identified from a prospective arthroplasty database. 2180 patients were included in the study. Age, gender, BMI, pre- and post-operative functional scores [Western Ontario and Mc Master University Arthritis Index(WOMAC) and Sf-36], complications and revision rate were recorded. Patients were grouped according to the WHO BMI classification. The functional outcome of the normal weight cohort(BMI formed comparing all five WHO BMI groups; Normal weight, overweight, class 1 obese, class 2 obese and class 3 *** With a mean age of 67.89(28-92), 2180 primary total knee replacements were included. 64.36%(1403) were female. The mean BMI was 31.86(18-52). Ninty-three percent of patients were either overweight or obese. Mean follow-up 19.33 mo(6-60 mo). There was no significant difference in pre or post-operative WOMAC score in the normal weight(BMI 0.05). Sub-group analysis revealed significantly worse WOMAC scores in class 2 obese 30.80 compared to overweight 25.80(P ficantly worse Sf-36 scores in class 2 obese 58.16 compared to overweight 63.93(P ficial infections, 9(0.41%) deep infections and 19(0.87%) revisions overall with no complications or revisions in the normal weight cohort(BMI functional outcome was not influenced by BMI comparing normal weight individuals with BMI > 25. Patients should not be denied total knee arthroplasty based solely on weight alone.

Numerical simulation of stepped channel flow was conducted using turbulence models based on the VOf technique. Stepped channel flow is a complicated air-water two-phase flow with free surface, which can be divided into three flow regimes： skimming flow, nappe flow and transition flow. The characteristics of skimming flow over mild stepped channel was investigated, including friction factors, air concentration profiles velocity field, clear-water and bulked depths, static pressure, etc. Smooth channel flow was also simulated to compare the hydraulic characteristics of the stepped channel flow with the smooth one. Comparisons between the computed and the measured were made. furthermore, comparison of the computed air concentration with Straub and Anderson＇s data was also performed. The fluent 6.1 software was employed to conduct this numerical simulation work.

CdS nanorods have been sorted by length using a density gradient ultracentrifuge rate separation method. The fractions containing longer rods showed relatively stronger oxygen-related surface trap emission, while the shorter ones had dominant band-edge emission. These results suggest that the final length distribution of CdS nanorods is not a result of random nucleation and growth, but is related to the local synthesis conditions. Inspired by these findings, different synthesis environments （N2, air, and 02） have been employed in order to tailor the length distribution. In addition to the rod length, the photoluminescence properties of CdS nanorods can also be manipulated. Increasing the oxygen partial pressure significantly changed the growth behavior of CdS nanorods by improving the anisotropic growth.

Nanofluids are considered as interesting alternatives to conventional coolants. It is well known that traditional fluids have limited heat transfer capabilities when compared to common metals. It is therefore quite conceivable that a small amount of extremely fine metallic particles placed in suspension in traditional fluids will considerably increase their heat transfer performances. A numerical investigation into the heat transfer enhancement capabilities of coolants with suspended metallic nanoparticles inside a radial, laminar flow cooling configuration is presented. Temperature dependant nanofluid properties are evaluated from experimental data available in recent literature. Results indicate that considerable heat transfer increases are possible with the use of relatively small volume fractions of nanoparticles. Generally, however, these are accompanied by considerable increases in wall shear-stress. Results also show that predictions obtained with temperature variable nanofluid properties yield greater heat transfer capabilities and lower wall shear stresses when compared to predictions using constant properties.

Cuttlebone signifies a special class of ultra-lightweight cellular natural material possessing unique chemical, mechanical and structural properties, which have drawn considerable attention in the literature. The aim of this paper is to better understand the mechanical and biological roles of cuttlebone. first, the existing literature concerning the characterisation and potential applications inspired by this remarkable biomaterial is critiqued. Second, the finite element-based homogenisation method is used to verify that morphological variations within individual cuttlebone samples have minimal impact on the effective me- chanical properties. This finding agrees with existing literature, which suggests that cuttlebone strength is dictated by the cut- tlefish habitation depth. Subsequently, this homogenisation approach is further developed to characterise the effective me- chanical bulk modulus and biofluidic permeability that cuttlebone provides, thereby quanti lying its mechanical and transporting functionalities to inspire bionic design of structures and materials for more extensive applications. finally, a brief rationale for the need to design a biomimetic material inspired by the cuttlebone microstructure is provided, based on the preceding inves- tigation.
