b.ckground： Glenohumeral internal rotation deficit （GIRD） is a risk factor for shoulder and elb.w injury in b.seb.ll players. Although this evidence forms a b.sis for recommending stretching, clinical measures of internal rotation range of motion （ROM） do not differentiate if GIRD is due to muscular, capsuloligamentous, or osseous factors. Understanding the contrib.tions of these structures to GIRD is important for the development of targeted interventions. We hypothesize that the osseous component will have the greatest relative contrib.tion to GIRD, followed b. muscle stiffness and posterior capsule thickness. Methods： Internal rotation ROM, muscle stiffness （teres minor, infraspinatus, and posterior deltoid）, posterior capsule thickness, and humeral retrotorsion were evaluated on 156 b.seb.ll players. A side-to-side difference was calculated for each variab.e. Variab.es were entered into a multivariab.e linear regression to determine the significant predictors of GIRD. Results： The regression model was statistically significant （R2 = 0.134, F（1, 156） = 24.0, p 〈 0.01） with only humeral retrotorsion difference remaining as a significant predictor （β = -0.243, t156 = -4.9, p 〈 0.01）. A greater humeral retrotorsion side-to-side difference was associated with more GIRD. Conclusion： Humeral retrotorsion accounted for 13.3% of the variance in GIRD. The stiffness of the superficial shoulder muscles and capsular thickness, as measured in this study, were not predictors of GIRD. Factors not assessed in this study, such as deeper muscle stiffness, capsule/ ligament laxity, and neuromuscular regulation of muscle stiffness may also contrib.te to GIRD. Since it is the largest contrib.tor to GIRD, causes of changes in humeral retrotorsion need to b. identified. The osseous component only accounted for 13.3% of the variance in GIRD, indicating a large contrib.tion from soft tissues factors that were not addressed in this study. Effects of stab.e aqueous fullerene nanocrystal (nC_(60)) on Daphnia magna:Evaluation of hop frequency and accumulations under different conditions

We investigated the effects of environmental factors and properties of water-stab.e crystal fullerene （nC60） on the uptake of nC60 b. Daphnia magna b.sed on known accumulation in our lab.ratory. This study was performed for seven days using different environmental factors including temperature, pH, water hardness, concentration （density of particle）, and particle size. Results demonstrated that b.dy b.rden of C60 increased with time in all experiments. b.dy b.rden of C60 increased with increasing concentration and particle size, and uptake of particles 〉100 nm reached their maximums more quickly than those 〈100 nm. Under high hardness in aqueous systems with lower pH and high temperature, uptake was higher than those under opposite conditions. Uptake in all b.tch tests reached b.lance within five days. b.th nC60 properties and environmental factors influenced uptake of nC60 b. D. magna in an aqueous system. Additionally, environmental factors may have affected accumulation b. changing nC60 properties, which are critical to understand the accumulation of fullerenes in aqueous systems.

Is Alzheimer’s Disease an Adaptab.lity Disorder? What Role Does Happiness Have in Treatment, Management and Prevention

A case presentation indicating the importance of “happiness” in childhood causing memory b.ock until the patent presented with prob.b.e mixed vascular and neurodegenerative memory loss at 60 years of age is presented to highlight the role of emotional factors in causing the disease. The question of whether Alzheimer’s disease is an adaptab.lity disorder is raised, given the patient b.ocked out her memory of her childhood experience. The importance of “happiness” as a treatment goal raises issues of advocacy and Guardianship as well as capacity, which is addressed b. actual case reference and court action in defence of the patient’s rights to have their wishes respected and ob.erved. Functional mental capacity assessment, using the Functional Mental State Measure (FMSM) gives a greater indication of neuronal reserve than standard cognitive testing, as it helps to unravel the dilemma associated with pure cognitive assessment in Alzheimer’s Disease as well as vascular dementia patients and patients who, despite retained and intact functional capacity and ab.lity to express their wishes, i.e. “b.st interest”, are “wrongly” placed under Guardianship. Maladaptive responses, to control the change in external environment that are sensed or perceived, and which lead to disorder or to susceptib.lity to disease, exemplify a General Systems Theory approach, in which appropriate and adequate responses to environmental change, in b.havioural terms, b. a person, whether independently, or as the recipient or giver, or b.th, leads to functional interaction and happiness.

Physiological and Growth Responses of C_3 and C_4 Plants to Reduced Temperature When Grown at Low CO_2 of the Last Ice Age

During the last ice age, CO2 concentration （[CO2]） was 180-200 umol/mol compared with the modern value of 380 umol/mol, and glob.l temperatures were -8 ℃ cooler. Relatively little is known ab.ut the responses of C3 and C4 species to longterm exposure to glacial conditions. Here Ab.tilon theophrasti Medik. （C3） and Amaranthus retroflexus L. （C4） were grown at 200 umol/mol CO2 with current （30/24℃） and glacial （22/16℃） temperatures for 22d. Overall, the C4 species exhib.ted a large growth advantage over the C3 species at low [CO2]. However, this advantage was reduced at low temperature, where the C4 species produced 5x the total mass of the C3 species versus 14x at the high temperature. This difference was due to a reduction in C4 growth at low temperature, since the C3 species exhib.ted similar growth b.tween temperatures. Physiological differences b.tween temperatures were not detected for either species, although photorespiration/net photosynthesis was reduced in the C3 species grown at low temperature, suggesting evidence of improved carb.n b.lance at this treatment. This system suggests that C4 species had a growth advantage over C3 species during low [CO2] of the last ice age, although concurrent reductions in temperatures may have reduced this advantage.

Comparative phylogeography and niche modeling for three species complexes of SE China （Paradoxornis spp., Pycnonotus spp., Spizixos spp.）

Contrasting multiple organisms with similar contemporary distrib.tions, researchers can identify shared evolutionary patterns and provide historical context for community composition. We used three species complexes with overlapping distrib.tions in Southeastern China and surrounding islands to explore the phylogeographic history of the region. Despite similar geographic distrib.tions, genetic data revealed few congruent patterns, b.t all complexes displayed genetic divergence for Taiwan Residents populations. Additionally, niche modeling and divergence dating did not find support for diversification associated with the Last Glacial Maximum [Current Zoology 61 （5）： 943-950,2015].

Physiological Mechanism of Salicylic Acid for Alleviation of Salt Stress in Rice

Soil salinity is one of the most important prob.ems of crop production in estuarine and coastal zones. Improvement in salt tolerance of major food crops is an important way for the economic utilization of coastal zones. This study proved that the application of salicylic acid(SA) improved the growth and yield under salt stress conditions and investigated its physiological mechanisms for salt tolerance. The investigation on the effect of SA for salt tolerance during germination showed that the decreased rates of germination and growth(in terms of shoot and root lengths) b. the salt stress were significantly increased b. the SA application(SA + NaCl). The treatment of SA to the high and low saline soils enhanced the growth, yield and nutrient values of rice. The effects of SA on Na^+, K^+ and Cl~– ionic accumulation were traced under salt stress condition b. inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry and ion chromatography. It was revealed that the increased accumulation of Na^+ and Clˉ ions b. the salt stress were reduced b. SA application. An increased concentration of endogenous SA level was detected from the SA-treated rice varieties(ASD16 and b.26) b. liquid chromatography electrospray Ionization-tandem mass spectrometry. The activities of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, catalase and peroxidase were increased b. salt stress whereas decreased b. the SA application. The study proved that the application of SA could alleviate the adverse effects of salt stress b. the regulation of physiological mechanism in rice plants. In spite of salt stress, it can b. applied to the coastal and estuarine regions to increase the rice production.
