Carcinogenesis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma:an alternate hypothetical mechanism

Current proposed mechanisms implicate both early and latent Epstein-Barr virus(EBV)infection in the carcinogenic cascade,whereas epidemiological studies have always associated nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC)with early childhood EBV infection and with chronic ear,nose,and sinus ***,most patients with NPC present with IgA antibody titers to EBV capsid antigen(VCA-lgA),which can precede actual tumor presentation by several *** early childhood EBV infection indeed constitutes a key event in NPC carcinogenesis,one would have to explain the inability to detect the virus in normal nasopharyngeal epithelium of patients at a high risk for EBV *** is perhaps possible that EBV resides within the salivary glands,instead of the epithelium,during *** claim is indirectly supported by observations that the East Asian phenotype shares the characteristics of an increased susceptibility to NPC and immature salivary gland morphogenesis,the latter of which is influenced by the association of salivary gland morphogenesis with an evolutionary variant of the human ectodysplasin receptor gene(EDAR),*** the immature salivary gland represents a more favorable nidus for EBV is uncertain,but in patients with infectious mononucleosis,EBV has been isolated in this anatomical *** presence of EBV-induced lymphoepitheliomas in the salivary glands and lungs further addresses the possibility of submucosal spread of the *** to the fact that the fossa of Rosen Muller contains a transformative zone active only in the first decade of life,one might be tempted to speculate the possibility of an alternative carcinogenic cascade for NPC that is perhaps not dissimilar to the model of human papillomavirus and cervical cancer.

Background:the current World Health Organization(WHO) classification of nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC) con?veys little prognostic *** study aimed to propose an NPC histopathologic classification that can poten?tially be used to predict prognosis and treatment ***:We initially developed a histopathologic classification based on the morphologic traits and cell differentia?tion of tumors of 2716 NPC patients who were identified at sun Yat?sen University Cancer Center(sYsUCC)(training cohort).then,the proposed classification was applied to 1702 patients(retrospective validation cohort) from hospitals outside sYsUCC and 1613 patients(prospective validation cohort) from *** efficacy of radiochemotherapy and radiotherapy modalities was compared between the proposed *** used Cox proportional hazards models to estimate hazard ratios(HRs) with 95% confidence intervals(CI) for overall survival(Os).Results:the 5?year Os rates for all NPC patients who were diagnosed with epithelial carcinoma(EC;3708 patients),mixed sarcomatoid?epithelial carcinoma(MsEC;1247 patients),sarcomatoid carcinoma(sC;823 patients),and squamous cell carcinoma(sCC;253 patients) were 79.4%,70.5%,59.6%,and 42.6%,respectively(P tivariate models,patients with MsEC had a shorter Os than patients with EC(HR = 1.44,95% CI = 1.27–1.62),sC(HR = 2.00,95% CI = 1.76–2.28),or sCC(HR = 4.23,95% CI = 3.34–5.38).Radiochemotherapy significantly improved survival compared with radiotherapy alone for patients with EC(HR 49–0.75),and possibly for those with sCC(HR = 0.67,95% CI = 0.56–0.80),MsEC(HR = 0.58,95% CI = 0..74–1.28).= 0.63;95% CI = 0.40–0.98),but not for patients with sC(HR = 0.97,95% CI = 0Conclusions:the proposed classification offers more information for the prediction of NPC prognosis compared with the WHO classification and might be a valuable tool to guide treatment decisions for subtypes that are associ?ated with a poor prognosis.

the field of two-dimensional(2D)magnets has expanded rapidly during the past several years since the first demonstration of intrinsic 2D magnetism in atomically thin CrI_(3) and Cr_(2)Ge_(2)te_(6) in 2017.2D transition metal chalcogenides(tMCs),a class of strongly correlated materials,have exhibited a wide variety of novel electronic and optical properties,and more recently ***,we review recent experimental progress achieved in the growth of 2D magnetic tMC materials using chemical vapor deposition and molecular beam epitaxy *** examples include the demonstration of room temperature intrinsic and extrinsic ferromagnetism in monolayer Vse_(2),Mnse_(2),Cr_(3)te_(4),V-doped Wse_(2),and so on.A brief discussion on the origin of the exotic magnetic properties and emergent phenomena is also ***,we summarize the remaining challenges and future perspective on the development of 2D magnetic materials for next-generation spintronic devices.

Ultrafast 3D imaging is indispensable for visualizing complex and dynamic biological *** scanning-based techniques necessitate an inherent trade-off between acquisition speed and space-bandwidth product(sBP).Emerging single-shot 3D wide-field techniques offer a promising alternative but are bottlenecked by the synchronous readout constraints of conventional CMOs systems,thus restricting data throughput to maintain high sBP at limited frame *** address this,we introduce EventLFM,a straightforward and cost-effective system that overcomes these challenges by integrating an event camera with Fourier light field microscopy(LFM),a state-of-theart single-shot 3D wide-field imaging *** event camera operates on a novel asynchronous readout architecture,thereby bypassing the frame rate limitations inherent to conventional CMOs *** further develop a simple and robust event-driven LFM reconstruction algorithm that can reliably reconstruct 3D dynamics from the unique spatiotemporal measurements captured by *** results demonstrate that EventLFM can robustly reconstruct fast-moving and rapidly blinking 3D fluorescent samples at kHz frame ***,we highlight EventLFM’s capability for imaging of blinking neuronal signals in scattering mouse brain tissues and 3D tracking of GFP-labeled neurons in freely moving *** believe that the combined ultrafast speed and large 3D sBP offered by EventLFM may open up new possibilities across many biomedical applications.

Electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction(HER)and overall water splitting(OWs)for renewable energy generation have recently become a highly promising and sustainable strategy to tackle energy crisis and global warming arising from our overreliance on fossil ***,tremendous research breakthroughs have been made in 2D carbon-based heterostructured electrocatalysts in this *** heterostructures are distinguished by their remarkable electrical conductivity,exposed active sites,and mechanical ***,with fundamental mechanisms of electrocatalytic OWs summarized,our review critically emphasized on state-of-the-art 2D carbon nanosheet-,graphene-,and graphdiyne-based heterostructured electrocatalysts in HER and OWs since ***,the three emerging carbonaceous substrates tend to be incorporated with metal carbides,phosphides,dichalcogenides,nitrides,oxides,nanoparticles,single atom catalysts,or layered double ***,fascinating structural engineering and facile synthesis strategies were also unraveled to establish the structure-activity relationship,which will enlighten future electrocatalyst developments toward ameliorated HER and OWs ***,computational results from density functional theory simulations were highlighted as well to better comprehend the synergistic effects within the ***,current stages and future recommendations of this brand-new electrocatalyst type were concluded and discussed for advanced catalyst designs and future practical applications.

Mechanical forces are key regulators of cellular behavior and function,affecting many fundamental biological processes such as cell migration,embryogenesis,immunological responses,and pathological *** force sensors and imaging techniques have been developed to quantify these otherwise invisible forces in single cells and in ***,current techniques rely heavily on high-resolution microscopy and do not allow interrogation of optically dense tissue,reducing their application to 2D cell cultures and highly transparent biological ***,we introduce DEFORM,deformable microlaser force sensing,a spectroscopic technique that detects sub-nanonewton forces with unprecedented spatio-temporal *** is based on the spectral analysis of laser emission from dye-doped oil microdroplets and uses the force-induced lifting of laser mode degeneracy in these droplets to detect nanometer *** validation by atomic force microscopy and development of a model that links changes in laser spectrum to applied force,DEFORM is used to measure forces in 3D and at depths of hundreds of microns within tumor spheroids and late-stage Drosophila *** furthermore show continuous force sensing with single-cell spatial and millisecond temporal resolution,thus paving the way for non-invasive studies of biomechanical forces in advanced stages of embryogenesis,tissue remodeling,and tumor invasion.
