This paper presents the first work of its kind within the confines of the study area. It unravels the distribution of the layers of conductive sand and their depths of interaction between freshwater from fresh sands and saltwater within the conductive layers in the coastal region of Akwa Ibom State (Nigeria) around the Gulf of Guinea. Vertical electrical sounding (VES) data whose fidelity was achieved by constraining the data by the available nearby logged borehole information during interpretation was the method applied. In the western region of the study area, the ferruginized and saline water layer is found within the depth range of 22 to 75 m deep. In the northern zone, conductive sandy layer is found within 50 to 210 m and in the eastern zone, the saline and ferruginized sandy layer is found within the depth of 88.5 m and above. Generally, the horizontal and vertical cross sections of the subsoil and the flow regime from water table depths have been delineated. With these information, water can be tapped in the area with caution and the flow direction determined can be used as input parameter in detailed contamination study.

Tuberculosis has traditionally been found to occur with weight loss or at least failure to gain weight. Atypical and unusual presentations of various types of tuberculosis have been reported but limited data is available on tuberculosis in well-nourished children with no weight loss. Two case reports from our experience highlight well-nourished children with histologically diagnosed tuberculosis that presented with atypical symptoms and no evidences of weight loss. The usefulness of histological diagnosis cannot be overemphasized. This report aims to highlight this unusual presentation of tuberculosis so as to increase the index of suspicion for early diagnosis and hence, prompt treatment of tuberculosis in this group of children.

目的建立检测香烟主流烟雾多环芳烃(PAH)测定方法,评价吸烟对PAH作业工人职业危害。方法采用标准化吸烟机工作程序收集主流烟雾中的颗粒物,经二甲基甲酰胺溶液、异辛烷分步提取,硅胶柱净化,然后用高效液相色谱技术分离检测主流烟雾中PAH9个组分。结果在选定条件下,该方法具有良好的线性、精密度和准确度。应用于实际样品检测,20个品牌国产香烟主流烟雾中总PAH平均含量为714.8ng/支。结论本方法适合于检测香烟主流烟雾中PAH含量;建立了将香烟主流烟雾PAH含量换算为8h平均吸入浓度从而评价吸烟对PAH作业工人职业危害的影响。

Missed Opportunities for Intermittent Preventive Treatment among Pregnant Women, in a Secondary Health Facility, Cross River State, Nigeria

The study determined the magnitude and contributory factors for missed opportunities for the administration of IPTp （intermittent preventive treatment for malaria prevention）, during pregnancy among pregnant women attending a secondary health facility in Calabar. This study was a descriptive survey. Exit interviews were carried out on all pregnant and post natal women who attended the antenatal clinic of a secondary health facility for two weeks in November 2008. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The mean age of respondents was 27.0 ± 5.4, mean parity was 2.4 ± 1.5, mean clinic attendance 4.9 ± 4.0 while mean gestational age at booking was 18.6± 7.7. The prevalence of missed opportunity among the pregnant women was 59.1% for IPTpl ＆ 56.0% for IPTp2; among pregnant PLWHA （people living with HIV/AIDS）, it was 100% for IPTp3, 70% for IPTp2 ＆ 80.0% for IPTpl. Factors accountable for missed opportunity include non-availability of SP （sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine）, lack of supervision, failure to prescribe medication, late booking and lack of knowledge. More women significantly received IPTp2 compared to IPTpl （P = 0.001）. Discussion： The findings establish the need for making SP available in the ANC （antenatal clinic）, educating health workers about current schedule and procedures for administration and early mobilization of pregnant mothers for ANC.

Characterization of LDPE Reinforced with Calcium Carbonate—Fly Ash Hybrid Filler

The synergetic effect of calcium carbonate (CC)-fly ash (FA) hybrid filler particles on the mechanical and physical properties of low density polyethylene (LDPE) has been investigated. Low density polyethylene is filled with varying weight percentages of FA and CC using melt casting. Composites are characterized for mechanical, thermal, microstructural and physical properties. Results show that the flexural strength increases with increases in FA content of the hybrid filler. It is evident from the study that to achieve optimum density a certain combination of both fillers need to be used. The optimum combination of CC and FA for a higher density (1.78 g/cm3) is found to be at 20 wt% FA and 30 wt% CC. An increase of 7.27% in micro-hardness over virgin polyethylene is obtained in composites with 10 wt% FA and 40 wt% CC. The presence of higher amount of CC is seen to be detrimental to the crystallinity of composites. X-ray, FTIR and DSC results show that composite with 45 wt% CC and 5 wt% FA exhibits a typical triclinic polyethylene structure indicating that the composite is amorphous in nature. There was the synergy between FA and CC fillers on flexural strength and crystallinity of composite. However, the fillers show the antagonistic effect on energy at peak and micro-hardness.

Application of Iterative Approaches in Modeling the Efficiency of ARIMA-GARCH Processes in the Presence of Outliers

The study explored both Box and Jenkins, and iterative outlier detection procedures in determining the efficiency of ARIMA-GARCH-type models in the presence of outliers using the daily closing share price returns series of four prominent banks in Nigeria (Skye (Polaris) bank, Sterling bank, Unity bank and Zenith bank) from January 3, 2006 to November 24, 2016. The series consists of 2690 observations for each bank. The data were obtained from the Nigerian Stock Exchange. Unconditional variance and kurtosis coefficient were used as criteria for measuring the efficiency of ARIMA-GARCH-type models and our findings revealed that kurtosis is a better criterion (as it is a true measure of outliers) than the unconditional variance (as it can be depleted or amplified by outliers). Specifically, the strength of this study is in showing the applicability and relevance of iterative methods in time series modeling.

An economically-important trait in poultry for which gene identification continues to be a challenge is immune response. The objective of the study was to quantitate the expression of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II BLB2 gene at cytolytic and latent immune response stages in Nigerian indigenous chickens. A total of 108 Nigerian indigenous chickens (NIC) were sourced across the South-western states in Nigeria. The birds were inoculated with sheep red blood cells (SRBC), after which blood samples were obtained (5 days post-inoculation) and antibody haemagglutination test was carried out to place the birds into groups of high and low antibody titre levels. The categorisation of the birds resulted in six groups of normal feather high, normal feather low, naked neck high, naked neck low, frizzle feather high and frizzle feather low antibody groups. A total of 48 chicks were selected from the progeny for gene expression studies. Surgical excision of thymus and spleen was carried out for the detection of cytolytic and latent responses of the birds. β-actin was used as the endogenous control and the critical threshold method (2–ΔΔCт

Recently, attention has been drawn to the use of bio-reinforced composites in automotive, construction, packaging and medical applications due to increased concern for environmental sustainability. Green polymer nanocomposites show unique properties of combining the advantages of natural fillers and organic polymers. Plant fibers are found suitable to reinforce polymers. They have relatively high strength and stiffness, low cost of acquisition, low density and produce low CO2 emission. They are also biodegradable and are annually renewable compared to other fibrous materials. Organic polymers on the other hand, are desirable because they are either recyclable or biodegradable without causing environmental hazards. This paper reviews current research efforts, techniques of production, trends, challenges and prospects in the field of green nanocomposites.

Anal cancer, especially squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) variety, is evolving with rising incidence globally. This is due to the increasing adoption of risky life styles and social habits even in populations with rare occurrences previously. This case report aims to expose risk factors exhibited by a patient recently managed for anal cancer in our facility before his demise. Early exposure to bisexual orientation, receptive anal intercourse and multiple sexual partners, are notable high risk factors for the development of anal SCC. The permissive role of smoking, illicit drug and alcohol use enhances the disease occurrence. Acquisition of human immune-deficiency virus (HIV) sero-positive status further reduces the body’s immune competence and enhances early age of onset as well as accelerates development of anal SCC. Proper history exploring the risk factors, physical/anorectal examination and histological analysis, are vital for proper diagnosis and staging which guides appropriate treatment with chemo-radiation as mainstay.
