The sexually dimorphic expression of glutamate transporters and their implication in pain after spinal cord injury

Paclitaxel （PTX）, one of the most effective cytotoxins for the treatment of breast and lung cancer, is limited by its severe side effects and low tumor selectivity. In this work hollow-poly（4-vinylpyridine）（hollow-p4VP） nanoparticles （NPs） have been used for the first time to generate PTX@p4VP NPs, employing a novel technique in which a gold core in the center of the NP is further oxidized to produce the hollow structure into which PTX molecules can be incorporated. The hollow-p4VP NPs exhibit good physicochemical properties and displayed excellent biocompatibility when tested on blood （no hemolysis） and cell cultures （no cytotoxicity）. Interestingly, PTX@p4VP NPs significantly increased PTX cytotoxicity in human lung （A-549） and breast （mCF-7） cancer cells with a significant reduction of PTX ICs0 （from 5.9 to 3.6 nm in A-549 and from 13.75 to 4.71 nm in mCF-7）. In addition, PTX@p4VP caused a decrease in volume of A-549 and mCF-7 multicellular tumor spheroids （mTS）, an in vitro system that mimics in vivo tumors, in comparison to free PTX. This increased antitumoral activity is accompanied by efficient cell internalization and increased apoptosis, especially in lung cancer mTS. Our results offer the first evidence that hollow- p4VP NPs can improve the antitumoral activity of PTX. This system can be used as a new nanoplatform to overcome the limitations of current breast and lung cancer treatments.

Effects of cropland abandonment and afforestation on soil redistribution in a small mediterranean mountain catchment

In slopes of mediterranean mid-mountain areas,land use and land cover changes linked to the aban-donment of cropland activity affect soil quality and degradation and soil redistribution;however,limited attention has been paid to this issue at catchment *** paper evaluates the effects of cropland abandonment and post-land abandonment management(through natural revegetation and afforesta-tion)on soil redistribution rates using fallout ^(137)Cs measurements in the Araguás catchment(0.45 km^(2),Central Spanish Pyrenees).A total of 52 soil core samples,distributed in a regular grid,from the first 30-40 cm and 9 sectioned reference samples were collected across the catchment and soil properties were *** ^(137)Cs was measured in a 5 cm sectioned references samples and in bulk grid samples.^(137)Cs inventories were used to estimate soil erosion and deposition rates across the *** show that the highest erosion rates were recorded under sparsely vegetated sites in the badland area,while the lowest rates were found in the afforested area,but no significant differences were observed between the different uses and covers in soil redistribution rates likely due to a long history of human intervention through cultivation in steep slopes and afforestation ***,the recovery of the soil organic matter in afforested areas suggest that afforestation can reduce soil degradation at long-term *** information gained achieve a better understanding of soil redistribution dynamics and provide knowledge for effective land management after cropland abandonment of agroecosystems in mediter-ranean mountain areas.

Classification of anemia for gastroenterologists

most anemia is related to the digestive system by dietary deficiency, malabsorption, or chronic bleeding. We review the World Health Organization definition of anemia, its morphological classifi cation (microcytic, macrocytic and normocytic) and pathogenic classi-fication (regenerative and hypo regenerative), and integration of these classifications. Interpretation of laboratory tests is included, from the simplest (blood count, routine biochemistry) to the more specific (iron metabolism, vitamin B12, folic acid, reticulocytes, erythropoietin, bone marrow examination and Schilling test). In the text and various algorithms, we propose a hierarchical and logical way to reach a diagnosis as quickly as possible, by properly managing the medical interview, physical examination, appropriate laboratory tests, bone marrow examination, and other comple-mentary tests. The prevalence is emphasized in all sections so that the gastroenterologist can direct the diagnosis to the most common diseases, although the tables also include rare diseases. Digestive diseases potentially causing anemia have been studied in preference, but other causes of anemia have been included in the text and tables. Primitive hematological diseases that cause anemia are only listed, but are not discussed in depth. The last section is dedicated to simplifying all items discussed above, using practical rules to guide diagnosis and medical care with the greatest economy of resources and time.

Analyzing the multilevel structure of the European airport network

A Feature Selection Strategy to Optimize Retinal Vasculature Segmentation

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a complication of diabetesmellitus thatappears in the retina. Clinitians use retina images to detect DR pathologicalsigns related to the occlusion of tiny blood vessels. Such occlusion brings adegenerative cycle between the breaking off and the new generation of thinnerand weaker blood vessels. This research aims to develop a suitable retinalvasculature segmentation method for improving retinal screening proceduresby means of computer-aided diagnosis systems. The blood vessel segmentationmethodology relies on an effective feature selection based on SequentialForward Selection, using the error rate of a decision tree classifier in theevaluation function. Subsequently, the classification process is performed bythree alternative approaches: artificial neural networks, decision trees andsupport vector machines. The proposed methodology is validated on threepublicly accessible datasets and a private one provided by Hospital Sant Joanof Reus. In all cases we obtain an average accuracy above 96% with a sensitivityof 72% in the blood vessel segmentation process. Compared with the state-ofthe-art, our approach achieves the same performance as other methods thatneed more computational *** method significantly reduces the numberof features used in the segmentation process from 20 to 5 dimensions. Theimplementation of the three classifiers confirmed that the five selected featureshave a good effectiveness, independently of the classification algorithm.
