Breast cancer is the number one cause of can- cer deaths among Hispanic women in the United States, and in Mexico, it recently became the primary cause of cancer deaths. This malign- nancy represents a poorly understood and un- derstudied disease in Hispanic women. The ELLA Binational Breast Cancer Study was es- tablished in 2006 as a multi-center study to as- sess patterns of breast tumor markers, clinical characteristics, and their risk factors in women of Mexican descent. We describe the design and implementation of the ELLA Study and provide a risk factor comparison between women in the U.S. and those in Mexico based on a sample of 765 patients (364 in the U.S. and 401 in Mexico). Compared to women in Mexico, U.S. women had significantly (p d breastfeeding rates (57.5% vs. 80.5%), higher use of oral contraceptives (60.7% vs. 50.1%) and hormone replacement therapy (23.3% vs. 7.6%), and higher family history of breast cancer (15.7% vs. 9.0%). Re- sults show that differences in breast cancer risk factor patterns exist between Mexico and U.S. women. We provide lessons learned from the conduct of our study. Binational studies are an important step in understanding disease pat- terns and etiology for women in both countries.

Chromitite bodies hosted in peridotites typical of suboceanic mantle(***)are found in the northern and central part of the Loma Caribe peridotite,in the Cordillera Central of the dominican *** chromitites are massive pods of small size(less than a few meters across)and veins that intrude both dunite and ***,they are high-Cr chromitites[Cr#=Cr/(Cr+Al)atomic ratio=0.71-0.83]singularly enriched in TiO2(up to 1.25 wt.%),Fe2 O3(2.77-9.16 wt.%)as well as some trace elements(ga,V,Co,Mn,and Zn)and PGE(up to 4548 ppb in whole-rock).This geochemical signature is unknown for chromitites hosted in oceanic upper mantle but akin to those chromites crystallized from mantle plume derived ***,the melt estimated to be in equilibrium with such chromite from the Loma Caribe chromitites is similar to basalts derived from different source regions of a heterogeneous Caribbean mantle *** mantle plume is responsible for the formation of the Caribbean Large Igneous Province(CLIP).dolerite dykes with back-arc basin basalt(BABB)and enriched mid-ocean ridge basalt(E-MORB)affinities commonly intrude the Loma Caribe peridotite,and are interpreted as evidence of the impact that the Caribbean plume had in the off-axis magmatism of the back-arc basin,developed after the Caribbean island-arc extension in the Late *** propose a model in which chromitites were formed in the shallow portion of the back-arc mantle as a result of the metasomatic reaction between the supra-subduction zone(SSZ)peridotites and upwelling plume-related melts.

Interspecific Crossing between Yam Species (dioscorea rotundata and dioscorea bulbifera) through in Vitro Ovule Culture

In the present study, in vitro ovule culture technique was used to obtain interspecific cross combination of dioscorea rotundata ufenyi and dioscorea bulbifera wild. Ten days after pollination, ovules were excised and cultured onto 1/2 strength Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium (Basal salt mixture + Vitamins) supplemented with 6% sucrose, 0.7% agar and plant growth hormones such as ga3, BAP, Picrolam and TdZ. Cultured ovules were transferred on 1/2 MS medium with 3% sucrose and 0.7% agar after three weeks. 40 days after pollination, germination was observed from 7 months cultured ovule between d. rotundata ufenyi x d. bulbifera wild. Hybridity of the regenerated plant was checked by flow cytometric method. A close relation was observed between the fluorescence intensity of the obtained progeny with one of the parents’ fluorescence. The observed progeny can be closely correlated with an apomictic tissue from an ovule parent of d. rotundata ufenyi. Plantlets derived from ovule culture were proliferated through in vitro shoot multiplication with hormonal concentration (0.5 mg/l BAP) supplemented with 1/2 strength MS medium. Obtained ovule culture derived in vitro plantlets were successfully hardened, acclimatized and transferred to the field, where they survived and grew normally. In plant breeding, interspecific crossing is very important technique, enabling the time needed to produce homozygous lines to be shortened as compared to the conventional plant breeding techniques.

Responses of Rice Mini-Core Collection Accessions to damage by diatraea saccharalis(Fabricius)Stem Borer

This study aimed to observe the response of 32 rice accessions to attack of sugarcane borer (diatraea saccharalis Fabr., 1794). Twenty larvae were placed on the leaf sheaths of rice plants. At 30 days after infestation, the rice plants were cut at ground level and taken to the laboratory to analyse the signs of borer attack, external and internal diameter of the stem and weight of surviving larvae. The results of the morphological traits of the rice plant, response of the plant to insect attack and development of the sugarcane borer larvae indicated a genotypic variation. The accessions that most favored larval survivals were IRAT 124 and MEARIN. Larvae with highest weight (0.0643 g) were found in IAPAR L 99-98 and the largest internal diameters of the rice stem (5.65 mm) were found in LAC 12. These accessions (IRAT 124, MEARIN, IAPAR L 99-98 and LAC 12) remained morphologically grouped with IAC 47, cultivar susceptible to sugarcane borer. The most tolerant materials based on the ability to produce new tillers after larval infestation were BR IRga 417 and MTU 15. The results of this study indicate that all the morphological traits were able to separate the accessions of rice into different groups in relation to resistance to the sugarcane borer d. saccharalis. These materials can be used as donor sources in pre-breeding for genetic resistance to sugarcane borers.

Objective： Analysis of abstinence rates of smokers per gender at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months in a Smoking Cessation Unit from January 2008 to december 2009. Methods： descriptive retrospective study. Analysis of socio-demographic variables, smoking patterns, associated comorbidities, continuous abstinence rates, success, relapses, failure and dropping out. Results： 278 smokers started treatment （33%）; 55.4% males and 44.6% females （mean age of 48.3 and 44.06 years, respectively）. The main associated comorbidities were： psychiatric （38.7%）, cardiovascular （dyslipemia 25%） and respiratory （COPd （chronic obstructive pulmonary disease） 9.7%） in females; cardiovascular （dyslipemia 34.4%）, psychiatric （34.4%） and respiratory （COPd 19.5%） in males. VRN （Varenicline） was prescribed in 40.2% males and 32.2% females; NRT （nicotine replacement therapy） was used in 46.6% and 38.7%, respectively; bupropion was employed in 6.5% and 21.8%, respectively. Psychological counseling was offered only to 7.8% males and 8.1% females. The continuous abstinence rates in males at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months were 51.3%, 37.7%, 32.5% and 30.5%, respectively, and were 45.2%, 29.8%, 25.0% and 24.2% for females. Failure was 9.7% for females and 18.8% for males. Success was more frequent for those on VRN （n = 41 males; n = 12 females）. No relapses were indicated for 42 females and 71 males. The percentage of relapses was higher at 3 months （29.0% females, 19.5% males）. Conclusions： The study observed differences in treating abstinence between genders （in the abstinence rates and failure index）. This implies having to consider incorporating the gender variable into the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of smoking.

Fast-track program in laparoscopic liver surgery:Theory or fact?

AIM:To analyze our results after the introduction of a fast-track(FT) program after laparoscopic liver surgery in our Hepatobiliarypancreatic ***:All patients(43) undergoing laparoscopic liver surgery between March 2004 and March 2010 were included and divided into two consecutive groups:Control group(CG) from March 2004 until december 2006 with traditional perioperative cares(17 patients) and fast-track group(FTG) from January 2007 until March 2010 with FT program cares(26 patients).Primary endpoint was the influence of the program on the postoperative stay,the amount of re-admissions,morbidity and *** we considered duration of surgery,use of drains,conversion to open surgery,intensive cares needs and ***:Both groups were homogeneous in age and *** differences in technique,time of surgery or conversion to open surgery were found,but more malignant diseases were operated in the FTG,and then transfusions were higher in *** and morbidity were similar in both groups,without *** stay was similar,with a median of 3 for CG vs 2.5 for ***,the 80.8% of patients from FTG left the hospital within the first 3 d after surgery(58.8% for CG).CONCLUSION:The introduction of a FT program after laparoscopic liver surgery improves the recovery of patients without increasing complications or re-admissions,which leads to a reduction of the stay and costs.

Bone infections following open bone fracture or implant surgery remain a challenge in the orthopedics *** order to avoid high doses of systemic drug administration,optimized local antibiotic release from scaffolds is required.3d additive manufactured(AM)scaffolds made with biodegradable polymers are ideal to support bone healing in non-union scenarios and can be given antimicrobial properties by the incorporation of *** this study,ciprofloxacin and gentamicin intercalated in the interlamellar spaces of magnesium aluminum layered double hydroxides(Mgal)andα-zirconium phosphates(ZrP),respectively,are dispersed within a thermoplastic polymer by melt compounding and subsequently processed via high temperature melt extrusion AM(~190◦C)into 3d *** inorganic fillers enable a sustained antibiotics release through the polymer matrix,controlled by antibiotics counterions exchange or pH ***,both antibiotics retain their functionality after the manufacturing process at high temperatures,as verified by their activity against both Gram+and Gram-bacterial ***,scaffolds loaded with filler-antibiotic do not impair human mesenchymal stromal cells osteogenic differentiation,allowing matrix mineralization and the expression of relevant osteogenic ***,these results suggest the possibility of fabricating dual functionality 3d scaffolds via high temperature melt extrusion for bone regeneration and infection prevention.

discrepancies between the responses to skin prick test to food and respiratory antigens in two subtypes of patients with irritable bowel syndrome

AIM:To compare the response to skin prick tests (SPTs) to food antigens (FAs) and inhalant allergens (IAs) in patients with two subtypes of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and healthy controls. METHOdS:We compared the results of SPTs for IAs and FAs in 87 volunteers divided into three groups:diarrhea predominant IBS (d-IBS) GroupⅠ(n = 19), constipation predominant IBS (C-IBS) Group Ⅱ (n = 17), and normal controls Group Ⅲ (n = 51). RESULTS:Of the 285 tests (171 for FAs and 114 for IAs) performed in GroupⅠwe obtained 45 (26.3%) positive responses for FA and 23 (20.1%) for IA. Of the 153 tests for FA in Group Ⅱ, we obtained 66 (20.1%) positive responses, and of the 102 tests for IA, we obtained 20 (19.6%) positive responses. Of the 459 tests for FA performed in Group Ⅲ, we obtained 39 (84%) positive responses, and of the 306 for IA, we obtained 52 (16.9%) positive responses. The numbers of positive responses were not significantly different between the three groups, but in the d-IBS group, the number of SPTFA responses differed significantly from those for the other two groups (P despite the small number of cases studied, the higher reactivity to FAs in GroupⅠcompared to Groups Ⅱ and Ⅲ adds new information, and suggests the presence of a possible alteration in intestinal epithelial function.
