Analysis of the Effects of Botulinum Toxin Type A to Promote the Survival of Transverse Rectus Abdominis Myocutaneous Flaps in an Animal Model

The transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous (TRAM) flap is one of the techniques for breast reconstruction surgery and other defects. Assuring the vascular input is the main factor that it should be ensured for the survival of the fap. Objective: The article presented is an experimental study, with the objective of evaluating the effect of the vasculature on the myocutaneous flaps of the abdominal rectum with botulinum toxin type A (TBoA) thay may improve the survival of the tissue by promoting the blood perfusion in distal parts of the flap and diminish the risk of necrosis. Material and methods: A total of 30 Wistar male rats, dissect pedicled right TRAM flap in all rats, divided into three groups: Group 1 was applied in saline solution 0.9%;Group 2 was applied in pre surgically TBoA (1 week before lifting the flap);Group 3, will apply TBOA Trans surgical. Results: Histological analysis showed: increased vascularity in group 2 TBoA compared with the saline solution with P < 0.05 statistically significant. In terms of fibrosis, inflammation and granulation tissue, there was no statistically significant difference at p = 0.6. Muscle atrophy was higher in the group of TBoA in the saline group p < 0.05. It was concluded that botulinum toxin type A prevents vasoconstriction of the vessel and promotes vasodilation subsequently lifting the muscle flap, no complications were observed in the groups with TBoA so it can be considered a safe substace and can be used for further studies.

Progressive osseous heteroplasia(POH)is an ultra-rare autosomal dominant disabling disorder characterized by heterotopic ossification(HO).It is caused by heterozygous inactivating mutations in the GNAS(guanine nucleotide-binding protein alpha-stimulating activity polypeptide)***,the molecular mechanisms underlying HO remain poorly *** a treatment for POH is not yet available,the identification of the mechanisms driving POH in affected tissues using gene expression may be of great help to underestand the molecular basis of POH and develop new therapeutic approaches.

Pupil apodization for increasing data storage density

We introduce a technique for increasing density in optical data storage systems. This technique is based on the use of a superresolving filter at the pupil of a confocal readout system. The main characteristic of this confocal readout system is that the light beam traverses twice through the pupil filter. We describe how to analyze the system performance for general filters, but we focus the study on filters with no focus displacement. Although the storage density attainable depends on the filter characteristics, we show that the storage density can be easily duplicated.

Chromium Adsorption in Different Mineralogical Fractions from Subtropical Soils

Safe application of chromium （Cr）-containing organic industrial wastes to soil requires considering the ability of the soil to adsorb Cr. In this study, the maximum Cr adsorption capacity was assessed for the bulk samples and their clay and iron-free clay fractions of four subtropical soils differing in mineralogy. To this end, the samples were supplied with Cr（Ⅲ） nitrate solutions at pH 4.5 or 5.5. The results of Cr（Ⅲ） adsorption fitted to a Freundlich equation and the adsorption capacity was positively correlated with soil organic matter and iron oxide contents. The clay fractions adsorbed more Cr per unit mass than the bulk soils and the iron-free clay fractions. The Cr（Ⅲ） adsorption capacity increased with increasing soil pH due to more charges on adsorbing surfaces. Our results suggest that the soils rich in organic matter and iron oxides and having a pH above 4.5 are suitable for application of Cr（Ⅲ）-loaded industrial wastes.

High pressure responsive luminescence of flexible Eu^(3+) doped PVDF fibrous mats

Exploring lanthanide doped materials and their high-pressure optical properties is important from the perspective of designing pressure sensors, piezoelectric materials, scintillators, and optoelectronic devices, just to mention a few. Understanding the high-pressure optical properties of polymeric fibrous mats provides significant advantages in terms of flexibility, tunability, facile processability, and malleability. In this work, we have developed flexible polyvinylidene difluoride(PVDF) fibrous mats doped with an Eu^(3+) source of Eu(NO_(3))_(3)·5H_(2)O(EN-PF) or Eu_(2)(SO_(4))_(3)(ES-PF) by a Forcespinning■ method. Microstructural analysis of these two systems indicates that Eu(NO_(3))_(3)·5H_(2)O and Eu_(2)(SO_(4))_(3) are homogeneously distributed and dispersed into the PVDF matrix. Fiber formation promotes a β-phase PVDF. Eu^(3+) doping increases the β-phase. Its fraction is larger for the ES-PF mats. To understand their high-pressure optical properties, their photoluminescence spectra have been taken at various pressures up to 58 GPa in a diamond anvil cell. High-pressure luminescence illustrates a clear change in asymmetry ratio, peak intensity, peak breadth, color coordinate, and color temperature of Eu^(3+) ions from both EN-PF and ES-PF with a different extent of changes. Specifically, Eu^(3+) ions in the ES-PF mats switch from asymmetric to symmetric environment as pressure increases. Those in the EN-PF mats present symmetric environment for all tested pressures. Both of the Eu^(3+) doped PVDF systems present irreversible changes. Therefore,the EN-PF fibrous mats present an opportunity to make pressure induced red-orange-yellow tunable phosphors for multifunctional applications.

ISCHEMIA trial:How to apply the results to clinical practice

During the last years two questions have been continuously asked in chronic coronary syndromes:(1)Do revascularization procedures(coronary artery bypass grafting or percutaneous coronary intervention)really improve symptoms of angina?and(2)Do these techniques improve outcomes,*** they prevent new myocardial infarction events and cardiovascular death?Therefore,there was a need for a large definitive *** study was the ISCHEMIA trial,a large,multicentric trial sponsored by the National Heart,Lung,and Blood *** main trial compared coronary revascularization and optimal medical treatment(OMT)vs OMT alone in 5179 patients enrolled after a stress *** a median 3.2-year follow-up,318 primary outcome events occurred;the adjusted hazard ratio for the invasive strategy as compared with the conservative strategy was 0.93(95%confidence interval 0.80-1.08,P=0.34).The ISCHEMIA trial deeply disrupted many of our prior attitudes regarding management strategies for patients with stable coronary artery *** findings underscore the benefits of disease-modifying OMT for stable coronary artery disease *** main purposes of ischemia assessment before this trial were:Diagnostic purposes,assessment of outcome,and adding to decision-making ***,this changed after the trial *** results of ISCHEMIA might challenge the current diagnostic approach for stable angina patients recommended in the last European Society of Cardiology guidelines on chronic coronary disease that were based on studies published before the ISCHEMIA *** this editorial we propose our approach based on the ISCHEMIA study and the pretest probability for a positive test in patients with chronic coronary syndromes.

Neurological complications associated with HIV-1/AIDS are being recognized with a high frequency that parallels the increased number of AIDS cases. The early infiltration by HIV-1 into the nervous system can cause primary and/or secondary neurological complications. The most common neurocognitive disorder is AIDS Dementia Complex (ADC). In developing countries of Asia the three most opportunistic infections are tuberculosis (TB), cryptococcosis, and Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. Therefore, it is expected that secondary neurological complications due to TB and cryptococcosis will be the most common cause of morbility and mortality in HIV-1/AIDS cases in China. Research of NeuroAIDS in China is necessary to understand the impact and the biology of HIV-1 in the nervous system. Future studies would include, the molecular epidemiology and the description of opportunistic infections associated to HIV-1; the neuropathological description of primary and secondary HIV-1 complications in different groups; the HIV-1 neurot- ropism and immune response studies for China’s unique HIV-1 strains and recombinant forms derived from the nervous system, including experimental models such as the use of transgenic rats; and the study of potential resistant virus, primarily when the anti-retroviral therapy (ART) has not full access in the brain.

Subclinical hearing loss associated with aging

Objective:Contribute to clarifying the existence of subclinical hearing deficits associated with ***:In this work,we study and compare the auditory perceptual and electrophysiological performance of normal-hearing young and adult subjects(tonal audiometry,high-frequency tone threshold,a triplet of digits in noise,and click-evoked auditory brainstem response).Study sample:45 normal hearing volunteers were evaluated and divided into two groups according to age.27 subjects were included in the“young group”(mean 22.1 years),and 18 subjects(mean 42.22 years)were included in the“adult group.”Results:In the perceptual tests,the adult group presented significantly worse tonal thresholds in the high frequencies(12 and 16 kHz)and worse performance in the digit triplet tests in *** the electrophysiological test using the auditory brainstem response technique,the adult group presented significantly lower I and V wave amplitudes and higher V wave latencies at the supra-threshold *** the threshold level,we observed a significantly higher latency in wave V in the adult *** addition,in the partial correlation analysis,controlling for the hearing level,we observed a relationship(negative)between age and speech in noise performance and high-frequency *** significant association was observed between age and the auditory brainstem ***:The results are compatible with subclinical hearing loss associated with aging.
