As photovoltaic energy increasingly penetrates in power systems,transmission system operators have started to request its participation in providing ancillary services.One of the demanded services is the power ramp-rate control(PRRC),which attempts to limit the power ramps produced by intermittent irradiance conditions.In order to achieve the desired objective,solutions based on storage systems or modifying the maximum power point tracking(mPPT)in perturb and observe(P&O)algorithms are commonly adopted.The starting point in PRRC is the determination of the instantaneous power ramprate,and different methods have been proposed in the literature for its calculation.However,the accuracy and computational speed of existing procedures can be improved,which may be critical in situations with rapid irradiance fluctuations.In this paper,a decoupled photovoltaic power ramp-rate calculation method is presented,in which the effect of variable irradiance and the P&O algorithm are computed separately.The proposed method has been theoretically demonstrated and tested through simulation and experimental tests.Simulation results show that it can improve the previous methods in terms of accuracy and computation time.Experimental validation with hardware-inthe-loop demonstrates the suitability of the proposed method for real-time applications,even in presence of noisy measurements.

Simultaneous optimization of even flow and land and timber value in forest planning:a continuous approach

Background:Forest management planning involves deciding which silvicultural treatment should be applied to each stand and at what time to best meet the objectives established for the forest.For this,many mathematical formulations have been proposed,both within the linear and non-linear programming frameworks,in the latter case generally considering integer variables in a combinatorial manner.We present a novel approach for planning the management of forests comprising single-species,even-aged stands,using a continuous,multi-objective formulation(considering economic and even flow)which can be solved with gradient-type methods.Results:The continuous formulation has proved robust in forest with different structures and different number of stands.The results obtained show a clear advantage of the gradient-type methods over heuristics to solve the problems,both in terms of computational time(efficiency)and in the solution obtained(effectiveness).Their improvement increases drastically with the dimension of the problem(number of stands).Conclusions:It is advisable to rigorously analyze the mathematical properties of the objective functions involved in forest management planning models.The continuous bi-objective model proposed in this paper works with smooth enough functions and can be efficiently solved by using gradient-type techniques.The advantages of the new methodology are summarized as:it does not require to set management prescriptions in advance,it avoids the division of the planning horizon into periods,and it provides better solutions than the traditional combinatorial formulations.Additionally,the graphical display of trade-off information allows an a posteriori articulation of preferences in an intuitive way,therefore being a very interesting tool for the decision-making process in forest planning.

A versatile microfluidic device for multiple ex vivo/ in vitro tissue assays unrestrained from tissue topography

Precision-cut tissue slices are an important in vitro system to study organ function because they preserve most of the native cellular microenvironments of organs,including complex intercellular connections.However,during sample manipulation or slicing,some of the natural surface topology and structure of these tissues is lost or damaged.Here,we introduce a microfluidic platform to perform multiple assays on the surface of a tissue section,unhindered by surface topography.The device consists of a valve on one side and eight open microchannels located on the opposite side,with the tissue section sandwiched between these two structures.When the valve is actuated,eight independent microfluidic channels are formed over a tissue section.This strategy prevents cross-contamination when performing assays and enables parallelization.Using irregular tissues such as an aorta,we conducted multiple in vitro and ex vivo assays on tissue sections,including short-term culturing,a drug toxicity assay,a fluorescence immunohistochemistry staining assay,and an immune cell assay,in which we observed the interaction of neutrophils with lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-stimulated endothelium.Our microfluidic platform can be employed in other disciplines,such as tissue physiology and pathophysiology,morphogenesis,drug toxicity and efficiency,metabolism studies,and diagnostics,enabling the conduction of several assays with a single biopsy sample.

A coupled fluid FEm-DEm technique for predicting blasting operations in tunnels

We present recent developments in the coupling of the finite element method(FEm)and the discrete element method(DEm)for the analysis of rock blasting operations in tunnels.The coupled FEm-DEm technique has been proven to be an efficient procedure for pre-dicting the multiple fractures of rock induced by the loads generated in blasting.The coupled FEm-DEm procedure is applied in tunnel construction,as well as to gas pressure blasting pyrotechnics to break rocks for the excavation of the tunnel front.In the latter case,the effect of gas explosion is modeled by solving the equations of gas dynamics in the analysis domain using FEm.The effect of gas forces in the underlying rock mass is modeled via an embedded fluid-structure interaction method.The efficiency of the coupled FEm-DEm tech-nique is demonstrated in several examples of fracture tests and rock blasting problems related to tunnel engineering.The examples pre-sented indicate that the combination of the DEm with simple three-node linear triangular elements(for two-dimensional problems)captures the onset of fractures and their evolution accurately,accounting for the penetration of gas in the failure domain(Zarate&Onate,2015;Zarate,Cornejo,&Onate,2018).

modeling gut neuro-epithelial connections in a novel microfluidic device

The intestinal lumen is filled with diverse chemical and physical stimuli.Intestinal epithelial cells sense these stimuli and signal to enteric neurons which coordinate a range of physiologic processes required for normal digestive tract function.Yet,the neuro-epithelial connections remain poorly resolved,in part because the tools for orchestrating interactions between these cellular compartments are lacking.We describe the development of a two-compartment microfluidic device for co-culturing enteric neurons with intestinal epithelial cells.The device contains epithelial and neuronal compartments connected by microgrooves.The epithelial compartment was designed for cell seeding via injection and confinement of intestinal epithelial cells derived from human intestinal organoids.We demonstrated that organoids planarized effectively and retained epithelial phenotype for over a week.In the second chamber we dissociated and cultured intestinal myenteric neurons including intrinsic primary afferent neurons(IPANs)from transgenic mice that expressed the fluorescent protein tdTomato.IPANs extended projections into microgrooves,surrounded and frequently made contacts with epithelial cells.The density and directionality of neuronal projections were enhanced by the presence of epithelial cells in the adjacent compartment.Our microfluidic device represents a platform that may,in the future,be used to dissect structure and function of neuro-epithelial connections in the gut and other organs(skin,lung,bladder,and others)in health and disease.

The ability to maintain functional hepatocytes has important implications for bioartificial liver development,cell-based therapies,drug screening,and tissue engineering.Several approaches can be used to restore hepatocyte function in vitro,including coating a culture substrate with extracellular matrix(ECm),encapsulating cells within biomimetic gels(Collagen-or matrigel-based),or co-cultivation with other cells.This paper describes the use of bioactive heparin-based core-shell microcapsules to form and cultivate hepatocyte spheroids.These microcapsules are comprised of an aqueous core that facilitates hepatocyte aggregation into spheroids and a heparin hydrogel shell that binds and releases growth factors.We demonstrate that bioactive microcapsules retain and release endogenous signals thus enhancing the function of encapsulated hepatocytes.We also demonstrate that hepatic function may be further enhanced by loading exogenous hepatocyte growth factor(HGF)into microcapsules and inhibiting transforming growth factor(TGF)-β1 signaling.Overall,bioactive microcapsules described here represent a promising new strategy for the encapsulation and maintenance of primary hepatocytes and will be beneficial for liver tissue engineering,regenerative medicine,and drug testing applications.

背景:2000年,联合国(UN)启动了千年发展目标5(mDG5),的全球性战略,其中mDG 5A,要求从1990年到2015年期间孕产妇死亡率(mmR)要减少75%。mmR,现在是当前全球可持续发展目标(SDG 3.1)的重要目标之一。据世界卫生组织(WHO)统计,2015年全球孕产妇死亡人数超过30万人,其中1%发生在发达国家,全球孕产妇死亡的66%发生在撒哈拉以南非洲(SSA)。截止到2015年,SSA只有两个国家(佛得角和卢旺达)实现了mDG5a目标,SSA地区其他国家的mmR仍高居不下。目的:本研究以没有实现mDG5a规定目标的撒哈拉以南的非洲国家为研究对象,分析其实现mDG5a的进展情况;根据进展情况,将其划分为三个组别,分析三组这些国家在1990-2015年间的mmR的下降进展及其相关影响因素。方法:利用世卫组织、世界银行和开发计划署官方网站公布的数据,收集SSA的44个国家数据进行分析。根据WHO的mmR进展的划分标准,将44个国家分成三个组;采用描述性统计分析、非参数检验、Kruskal Wallis方法,分析在1990-2015年间孕产妇死亡率变化趋势。将十五项影响因素主要两个方面:社会经济和与卫生保健,运用二元相关分析法检验mmR与这些因素之间的关系。。将佛得角和卢旺达两个国家作为参照,与未实现目标的其他三组国家进行比较,探索影响该地区降低mmR的主要因素。结果:双变量相关分析显示,mmR与成人识字率(-0.627)、HDI(-0.681),护士和助产士数量(-0.608)、由专业人员接生(SBA)(-0.575)、卫生保健支出(-0.548)、避孕普及率(-0.545)和总生育率之间有显著的相关性(0.543)。mmR与居住地之间无显著相关。三组使用非参数检验的比较(Kruskal Wallis试验)表明,三组之间具有最显著差异的指标为:避孕率、每1000人口护士数和助产士人数(PmmR比较高的国家在避孕普及率、每万人口的医生人数、卫生设施的使用率和妇女的识字率等几个指标值偏低。结论:为了加快实现SDG 3.1目标,需要重点改善影响孕产妇和产妇健康状况的卫生系统内部和外部的因素。卫生系统内部的主要影响因素为专业医疗卫生人员数、医生数、护士和助产士的数量以及避孕率;卫生系统外部的主要因素包括社会、教育和经济因素。研究发现,妇女识字率和改善卫生设施的指标是影响产妇健康的重要因素。提高教育水平、卫生资源配置水平(特别是护士和助产士数量)、增加获得卫生设施的机会以及资源的充分利用是降低SSA国家的mmR的前提条件。

Isotopic niche provides an insight into the ecology of a symbiont during its geographic expansion

The study of the recent colonization of a symbiont and its interaction with host communities in new locations is an opportunity to understand how they interact.The use of isotopic ratios in trophic ecology can provide measurements of a species'isotopic niche,as well as knowledge about how the isotopic niches between symbiont and host species overlap.Stable isotope measurements were used to assess the sources of carbon assimilated by the host species(the bivalves mytilus galloprovincialis and Scrobicularia plana)and their associated symbiont pea crab Afropinnotheres monodi,which occurs within these bivalves'mantle cavities.The mixing model estimates suggest that all of them assimilate carbon from similar sources,particularly from pseudofaeces and particulate organic matter in this symbiotic system based on filter feeding.The symbiotic species occupy comparable trophic levels and its association seems to be commensal or parasitic depending on the duration of such association.The pea crab A.monodi reflects a sex-specific diet,where males are more generalist than the soft females because the latter's habitat is restricted to the host bivalve.The high isotopic overlap between soft females and m.galloprovincialis may reflect a good commensal relationship with the host.

Effects of obstructive sleep apnea and its treatment over the erectile function： a systematic review

Erectile dysfunction （ED） is considered a condition with a broad range of etiologies. Obstructive sleep apnea （OSA） syndrome is one of the lesser studied risk factors for ED. We intend to summarize the current evidence on the relationship between OSA and sexual impairment, focusing on the results in terms of erectile function of the different therapies offered to OSA patients. A systematic review was conducted, selecting articles related to the physiology of OSA and ED, and to the treatments of OSA syndrome and their reported outcomes in erectile and sexual function. Higher prevalences of ED in the OSA groups have been published. However, whether this effect on the erectile function occurs in the entire range of OSA severities remains unclear. Several hypotheses were proposed to explain the physiology of this association. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure as a treatment for OSA patients with ED has achieved a significative improvement in the sexual parameters in most of the studies. Phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors （iPDE5） on demand are useful as a treatment for ED in this subgroup of patients, with high satisfaction rates. The surgical treatment for the OSA evidenced benefits over the erectile function, and the effect on the sexual satisfaction of the therapy using mandibular Advancement Devices is still undefined.
