30 different arbuscular m.corrhizal fungi （Am.） species, distributed in different genera such as Glom.s, Acaulospora, Scutellospora, Entrophospora, Am.isporu, Kuklospora, Gigaspora, and Archeospora, have been identified in the root zone of Araucaria angustifolia, known as Brazil Pine. During our Am. survey in this ecosystem. our attention was called to the presence of m.ny superficially growing Araucaria roots. Our hypothesis was that these roots were colonized with Am. because of the presence of Am. spores in organic m.terial aboveground. Sam.les of these superficial roots and the organic substrate they were growing on were evaluated for their m.corrhizal status. DNA was extracted from.the Am.-colonized superficial roots and subm.tted to polym.rase chain reaction （PCR） am.lification using the NS31-Am. prim.r pair, followed by cloning and sequencing. We found that the root colonization percentages were between 31% and 52%, and the num.er of Am. spores in the substrate ranged from.27 to 164 spores per 50 g dry substrate. The phylogenetic analyses and tree construction using m.xim.m.parsim.ny （m.） and neighbor-joining （N J） m.thods identified 13 different species of the phylum.Glom.rom.cota belonging to the genera Glom.s, Funneliform.s, Rhizophagus, Gigaspora, Acaulospora, and Archaeospora, and five isolates were identified only at the genus level. To our knowledge, this is the first report on Araucaria angustifolia with roots growing aboveground, producing runner roots that develop on dead tree trunks and organic m.terial. The higher colonization of the aboveground roots than those com.only found in belowground Araucaria roots suggests that they m.y present active m.tabolic uptake of nutrients.

Cell adhesion processes are governed by the nanoscale arrangem.nt of the extracellular m.trix （ECm., being m.re affected by local rather than global concentrations of cell adhesive ligands. In m.ny cell-based studies, grafting of dendrim.rs on surfaces has shown the benefits of the local increase in concentration provided by the dendritic configuration, although the lack of any reported surface characterization has lim.ted any direct correlation between dendrim.r disposition and cell response. In order to establish a proper correlation, som. control over dendrim.r surface deposition is desirable. Here, dendrim.r nanopatterning has been em.loyed to address arginine-glycine-aspartic acid （RGD） density effects on cell adhesion. Nanopatterned surfaces were fully characterized by atom.c force m.croscopy （AFm., scanning tunneling m.croscopy （STm. and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy （XPS）, showing that tunable distributions of cell adhesive ligands on the surface are obtained as a function of the initial dendrim.r bulk concentration. Cell experim.nts showed a clear correlation with dendrim.r surface layout： Substrates presenting regions of high local ligand density resulted in a higher percentage of adhered cells and a higher degree of m.turation of focal adhesions （FAs）. Therefore, dendrim.r nano- patterning is presented as a suitable and controlled approach to address the effect of local ligand density on cell response. m.reover, due to the easy m.dification of dendrim.r peripheral groups, dendrim.r nanopatterning can be further extended to other ECm.ligands having density effects on cells.

A defensive k-alliance in a graph is a set S of vertices with the property that every vertex in S has at least k m.re neighbors in S than it has outside of S. A defensive k-alliance S is called global if it form. a dom.nating Set. In this paper we study the problem.of partitioning the vertex set of a graph into （global） defensive k-alliances. The （global） defensive k-alliance partition num.er of a graph Г = （V, E）, ψkgd（F）） ψkd（F）, is defined to be the m.xim.m.num.er of sets in a partition of V such that each set is a （global） defensive k-alliance. We obtain tight bounds on ψkd（F） and ψkgd（F） in term. of several param.ters of the graph including the order, size, m.xim.m.and m.nim.m.degree, the algebraic connectivity and the isoperim.tric num.er. m.reover, we study the close relationships that exist am.ng partitions of F1 × F2 into （global） defensive （kl ＋ k2）-alliances and partitions of Fi into （global） defensive ki-alliances, i ∈ {1, 2}.

The identification of jets originating from.quarks and gluons,often referred to as quark/gluon tagging,plays an im.ortant role in various analyses perform.d at the Large Hadron Collider,as Standard m.del m.asurem.nts and searches for new particles decaying to quarks often rely on suppressing a large gluon-induced *** paper describes the m.asurem.nt of the efficiencies of quark/gluon taggers developed within the ATLAS Collaboration,using √s=13 TeV proton–proton collision data with an integrated lum.nosity of 140 fb^(-1) collected by the ATLAS *** taggers with high perform.nces in rejecting jets from.gluon over jets from.quarks are studied:one tagger is based on requirem.nts on the num.er of inner-detector tracks associated with the jet,and the other com.ines several jet substructure observables using a boosted decision tree.A m.thod is established to determ.ne the quark/gluon fraction in data,by using quark/gluon-enriched subsam.les defined by the jet *** in tagging efficiency between data and sim.lation are provided for jets with transverse m.m.ntum.between 500 GeV and 2 TeV and for m.ltiple tagger working points.

Relieving network congestions is a critical goal for the safe and flexible operation of m.dern power system., especially in the presence of interm.ttent renewables or distributed generation. This paper deals with the real-tim. coordinated operation of distributed static series com.ensators(DSSCs) to rem.ve network congestions by suitable m.difications of the branch reactance. Several objective functions are considered and discussed to m.nim.ze the num.er of the devices involved in the control actions, the total losses or the total reactive power exchanged, leading to a non-convex m.xed-integer non-linear program.ing problem. Then, a heuristic m.thodology com.ining the solution of a regular NLP with k-m.ans clustering algorithm.is proposed to get rid of the binary variables, in an attem.t to reduce the com.utational cost. The proposed coordinated operation strategy of the DSSCs is tested on several benchm.rk system., providing feasible and sufficiently optim.l solutions in a reasonable tim. fram. for practical system..

Transient Charge Trapping in Eu^(3+)-Doped Nanocom.osites by Ultrafast Laser Excitation

Eu^3＋ was incorporated as probe ions into nanocom.osite glasses, such as m.tal silver doped phosphate glass and crystalline nanocom.osites Si-enriched SiO2 glass. Lum.nescence studies show that the doped europium.ions are present as trivalent Eu^3＋ , and are distributed in the m.trix on the boundary surface of nanoparticles. The valence switching from.Eu^3＋ to Eu^2＋ was observed in Si-SiO2 nanocom.osites when ultrafast laser excitation was applied. In silver m.tal nan-oparticles em.edded alum.nophosphate glass, a tim.-resolved ultrafast degenerate-four-wave-m.xing （DFWm. experim.nt shows enhanced third-order nonlinearity at zero-delay tim., followed by a bell-like signal buildup. It is attributed to the creation of electronic polaron and vibronic Wannier-m.tt exciton （Wm.）. In europium.codoped sam.le, however, the bell-like signal is depressed. All the above observations are interpreted as the result of a strong Coulom. interaction between conduction electrons produced inside the nanoparticles by laser excitation and Eu^3＋ ions residing near the surface. The trivalent europium.ions play the role as positive boundary charges attracting electrons. This results in tem.orary form.tion of Eu^2＋ , and blocks the resonant tunneling transition in the silver-glass system.to avoid creating large radius polaron.
