In vitro antileishmanial effects of Physalis angulata root extract on leishmania infantum

Objective： In the present study, we evaluated the effects of the aqueous extract of Physalis angulata root （AEPa） on leishmania infanturn proliferation, morphology, and the driving mechanism in leishmanicidal activity and modulatory action on macrophages. Methods： I., infantum promastigotes were treated with 50 and 100 μg/ml AEPa for 72 h and then antipro- mastigote assay was performed by counts in a Newbauer chamber, morphological changes were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy and the mechanism of the leishmanicidal activity was detected. In addition, macrophages were infected with l. infantum and were used to evaluate anti-amastigote activity of AEPa and effects of AEPa on cytokine secretion after 72-hour treatment. Results： Treatment with AEPa reduced the numbers ofl infantum promastigotes （50% inhibitory concen- tration （ICso） = 65.9μg/ml; selectivity index （SI）= 22.1） and amastigotes （ICso = 37.9 μg/ml; SI = 38.5） compared with the untreated control. Amphotericin B reduced 100% of the promastigote numbers after 72 h of treatment （IC50 = 0.2μg/ml）. AEPa induced several morphological changes and increased the production of reactive oxygen species and apoptotic death in promastigotes after treating for 72 h. AEPa （100 μg/ml） promoted tumor necrosis factor-α secretion in macrophages infected with l. infantum after 72 h of treatment, but did not induce an increase in this cytokine in noninfected macrophages. In addition, AEPa showed no cytotoxic effect on J774-A1 cells （50% cytotoxic concentration 〉1000μg/ml）. Conclusion： AEPa presented antileishmanial activity against the promastigotes and amastigotes of I.. infantum without macrophage cytotoxicity; these results show that natural products such as P. angulata have leishmanicidal potential and in the future may be an alternative treatment for leishmaniasis.

Exploring Gender Stereotypes in American and Mexican Magazine Advertisements

This study analyzed gender stereotypes in American and Mexican magazine advertisements. The researchers conducted a content analysis of four major fashion magazines （i.e., Vogue, Cosmopolitan, People en Espahol, and Vanidades）, using KANG＇s （1997） scales of gender behaviors inspired by Goffman＇s （1979） gender studies. The researcher obtained findings by averaging the overall sum of each country＇s stereotypes by comparing them for any similarities or disparities. The results suggest a similar amount of gender stereotypes across both countries, specifically in the gender categories of ＂feminine touch＂, ＂licensed withdrawal＂, and ＂body display＂. Overall, findings from this study provide further implications for future researchers and marketers. Future researchers should further analyze gender behavior by conducting a longitudinal study of the various types of gender stereotypes at an international level. Additional implications and future research ideas are discussed throughout this research.

The Ecological Classification of Coastal Wet longleaf Pine (Pinus palustris) of Florida from Reference Conditions

Tropical storms, fire, and urbanization have produced a heavily fragmented forested landscape along Florida’s Gulf coast. The longleaf pine forest, one of the most threatened ecosystems in the US, makes up a major part of this fragmented landscape. These three disturbance regimes have produced a mosaic of differently-aged pine patches of single or two cohort structures along this coastline. The major focus of our study was to determine reference ecosystem conditions by assessing the soil biochemical properties, overstory stand structure, and understory plant species richness along a patch-derived 110-year chronosequence in order to accurately evaluate on-going longleaf pine restoration projects. This ecological dataset was also used to classify each reference patch as mesic flatwoods, wet flatwoods, or wet savanna. All of the reference locations were found to have similar soil types with no significant differences in their soil biogeochemistry. Mean diameter-at-breast height (DBH), tree height, and patch basal area increased as mean patch age increased. Stand growth reached a plateau around 80-90 years. Shrub cover was significantly higher in the matureaged patches (86-110 years) than in the young (6-10 years) or mid-aged (17-52 years) patches, despite prescribed fire. Plant species diversity as indicated by the Shannon-Wiener index decreased with patch age. Soil biogeochemical properties, forest structure, and understory species composition were effective for ecologically classifying our pine patches as 55 % mesic flatwoods, 20% wet flatwoods, and 25% wet savanna. Florida’s Gulf coastal wet longleaf pine flatwoods attain a structural and plant species equilibrium between 80-90 years.

The aim of this study was to evaluate injectable,in situ cross-linkable elastin-like recombinamers(ElRs)for osteochondral *** the ElR-based hydrogel alone and the ElR-based hydrogel embedded with rabbit mesenchymal stromal cells(rMSCs)were tested for the regeneration of critical subchondral defects in 10 New Zealand ***,cylindrical osteochondral defects were filled with an aqueous solution of ElRs and the animals sacrificed at 4months for histological and gross evaluation of features of biomaterial performance,including integration,cellular infiltration,surrounding matrix quality and the new matrix in the *** both approaches helped cartilage regeneration,the results suggest that the specific composition of the rMSC-containing hydrogel permitted adequate bone regeneration,whereas the ElR-based hydrogel alone led to an excellent regeneration of hyaline *** conclusion,the ElR cross-linker solution can be easily delivered and forms a stable well-integrated hydrogel that supports infiltration and de novo matrix synthesis.

In this paper we report for the first time the presence of bistability in an acoustic-optic tunable filter (AOTF) operating with ultrashort (2 ps) optical light pulses. The results for the study of bistability has shown the dependence of the hysteresis curve with the product of the coupling constant (κ) by the length of the device (ξl) and the conversion power-coupling constant factor (G). The range of bistability varies significantly with both G and with κξl parameters. The variation of κξl directly increases the size of the range of bistability hysteresis while the increase in G causes the bistability to occur at low powers. The phenomenon of optical bistability (OB) is the object of increasing interest due to its possibilities for important device applications. A bistable device is a device with a capability to generate two different outputs for a given input and the physical requirements for this are an intensity-dependence refractive index and an optical feedback mechanism.

Breast cancer is the most common type of malignant tumor among women and their second leading cause of cancer-related *** most common method for screening and diagnosis is ***,two main problems have been ***,the dose of radiation received during the test prevents the method from the use on women who are 〈 40 years ***,there can be mammogram failure owing to the lack of tumor contrast with the fibrous ***,there is a need for screening methods that will help to identify high-risk *** developed a biological marker test that can help to identify *** levels of sialic acid （SA） in saliva are known to correlated with breast *** this study,we evaluated the feasibility of Raman spectroscopy as a method for quantification of SA in saliva,using citrate-reduced silver nanoparticles （cit-Ag-NPs） as a surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy （SERS） *** of SA was accomplished by measuring its intensity in saliva and comparing it with a calibration curve of SA *** mean SA concentration in saliva was found to be significantly higher among 100 breast cancer patients （18.3 ＆#177; 9.4 mg＆#183;dl-1;mean ＆#177; SD） than among 106 healthy controls （3.5 ＆#177; 1.0 mg＆#183;dl-1）.The SERS test showed sensitivity of 94% and specificity 98% for detection of patients with breast cancer,assuming that SA concentration 〉 7 mg＆#183;dl-1 is a cutoff for positive test *** findings prove the usefulness of this SERS technique as a simple,convenient,and highly sensitive method of quantitative analysis of SA in *** simplicity of this nanotechnological test may help to substantially reduce the mortality among patients with breast cancer by providing women with a simple,noninvasive screening test that can be applied regardless of age or density of breast tissue.

Effects of small-scale disturbances and elevation on the morphology,phenology and reproduction of a successful geophyte

The role of solvents in the formation of methylammonium lead triiodide perovskite

Metal halide perovskites(MHPs) are gaining increasing attention as low-cost, high-performance semiconductors for optoelectronics. In particular, their solution processing is compatible with the largescale manufacturing of thin-film devices, including solar cells and light-emitting *** the coordination chemistry in precursor-solvent solution and atomistic mechanisms of film formation is of great importance for optimizing the optoelectronic properties of the final *** the methylammonium lead triiodide(MAPbI_(3)) as an example, we study the complex evolution of the molecular species from the solution to the initial stage of the crystallization by using a combination of density functional theory(DFT) calculations and ab-initio molecular dynamics(AIMD) simulations. We focus on the widely employed solvents DMSO and DMF, analyze the structures and energies of the iodoplumbate complexes in the form of simple complex of [PbI_(m)l_(n)]^(2-m))_(x) and polymeric iodoplumbates of([PbI_(m)l_(n)]^(2-m))_(x). Based on the calculated formation enthalpies, we propose reaction schemes of MAPbI_(3) formation in DMSO, DMF and DMF-DMSO binary solvent and explain the advantages of the binary *** highlight the important role of NH...O hydrogen bonds in the formation of iodoplumbates *** calculations indicate unbalanced reaction energies at several elementary reaction steps in either DMF(formation of [PbI_(4)l_(n)]^(2-) being highly favourable) or DMSO(formation of [PbI_(5)l_(n)]^(3- )being retarded).Mixing a small amount of DMSO in DMF gives rise to a better balance in the energies and, therefore,potentially better equilibria in the overall crystallization process and better quality of the final perovskite films.
