Effects of obstructive sleep apnea and its treatment over the erectile function： a systematic review

Erectile dysfunction （ED） is considered a condition with a broad range of etiologies. Obstructive sleep apnea （OSA） syndrome is one of the lesser studied risk factors for ED. We intend to summarize the current evidence on the relationship between OSA and sexual impairment, focusing on the results in terms of erectile function of the different therapies offered to OSA patients. A systematic review was conducted, selecting articles related to the physiology of OSA and ED, and to the treatments of OSA syndrome and their reported outcomes in erectile and sexual function. Higher prevalences of ED in the OSA groups have been published. However, whether this effect on the erectile function occurs in the entire range of OSA severities remains unclear. Several hypotheses were proposed to explain the physiology of this association. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure as a treatment for OSA patients with ED has achieved a significative improvement in the sexual parameters in most of the studies. Phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors （iPDE5） on demand are useful as a treatment for ED in this subgroup of patients, with high satisfaction rates. The surgical treatment for the OSA evidenced benefits over the erectile function, and the effect on the sexual satisfaction of the therapy using Mandibular Advancement Devices is still undefined.

Predicting the clothing insulation through machine learning algorithms:A comparative analysis and a practical approach

Since indoor clothing insulation is a key element in thermal comfort models,the aim of the present study is proposing an approach for predicting it,which could assist the occupants of a building in terms of recommendations regarding their ensemble.For that,a systematic analysis of input variables is exposed,and 13 regression and 12 classification machine learning algorithms were developed and compared.The results are based on data from 3352 questionnaires and 21 input variables from a field study in mixed-mode office buildings in Spain.Outdoor temperature at 6 a.m.,indoor air temperature,indoor relative humidity,comfort temperature and gender were the most relevant features for predicting clothing insulation.When comparing machine learning algorithms,decision tree-based algorithms with Boosting techniques achieved the best performance.The proposed model provides an efficient method for forecasting the clothing insulation level and its application would entail optimising thermal comfort and energy efficiency.

Progressive osseous heteroplasia(POH)is an ultra-rare autosomal dominant disabling disorder characterized by heterotopic ossification(HO).It is caused by heterozygous inactivating mutations in the GNAS(guanine nucleotide-binding protein alpha-stimulating activity polypeptide)gene.However,the molecular mechanisms underlying HO remain poorly understood.As a treatment for POH is not yet available,the identification of the mechanisms driving POH in affected tissues using gene expression may be of great help to underestand the molecular basis of POH and develop new therapeutic approaches.

ATXN2 one gene with multiple phenotype effects:ATXN2 gene encodes a cytosolic protein(ataxin-2)with pleiotropic functions(see below).This gene contains a number of exonic Cytosine-Adenine-Guanine(CAG)-repeats which encodes a polyglutamine tract(polyQ)in the N-terminal intrinsically disordered region(IDR)of the protein.ATXN2CAG repeats are interrupted by CAA codons which is relevant only for DNA and RNA but not for protein since CAA also encodes glutamine(Q).

Objective:Penile neoplasia,usually of squamous histogenesis,is currently classfied into human papillomavirus(HPV)-related or-dependent and non-HPV-related or-indepen dent.There are distinct morphological differences among the two groups.New research studies on penile cancer from Northern countries showed that the presence of HPV is corre lated with a better prognosis than virus negative people,while studies in Southern countries had not confirmed,perhaps due to differences in staging or treatment.Methods:We focused on the description of the HPV.related carcinomas of the penis.The approach was to describe common clinical features followed by the pathological features of each entity or subtype stressing the characteristics for differential diagnosis,HPV genotypes,and prognostic features of the invasive carcinomas.Similar structure was followed for penile intraepithelial neoplasia,except for prognosis because of the scant evidence available.Results:Most of HPV-related lesions can be straightforwardly recognized by routine hematoxylin and eosin stains,but in some cases surrogate p16 immunohistochemical staining or molecular methods such as in situ hybridization or polymerase chain reaction can be utilized.Currently,there are eight tumor invasive variants associated with HPV,as follows:basaloid,warty,warty-basaloid,papillary basaloid,clear cell,medullary,lymphoepithelioma-like,and giant condylomas with malignant transformation.Conclusion:This review presents and describes the heterogeneous clinical,morphological,and genatypic features of the HPV-related subtypes of invasive and non-invasive penile neoplasia.

The Erdos-Sos conjecture says that a graph G on n vertices and number of edges e（G）〉 n（k - 1）/2 contains all trees of size k. In this paper we prove a sufficient condition for a graph to contain every tree of size k formulated in terms of the minimum edge degree ξ（G） of a graph G defined as {（G） = min{d（u）＋ d（v） - 2 ： uv ∈ E（G）}. More precisely, we show that a connected graph G with maximum degree △（G） ≥ k and minimum edge degree {（G）〉 2k - 4 contains every tree of k edges if dG（x）＋ dG（y） ≥ 2k - 4 for all pairs x, y of nonadjacent neighbors of a vertex u of dG（u） ≥ k.

Clustered organization of biosynthetic non-homologous genes is emerging as a characteristic feature of plant genomes.The co-regulation of clustered genes seems to largely depend on epigenetic reprogram-ming and three-dimensional chromatin conformation.In this study,we identified the long non-coding RNA(lncRNA)MARneral Silencing(MARS),localized inside the Arabidopsis marneral cluster,which con-trols the local epigenetic activation of its surrounding region in response to abscisic acid(ABA).MARS modulates the POLYCOMB REPRESSIVE COMPLEX 1(PRC1)component LIKE HETEROCHROMATIN PROTEIN 1(LHP1)binding throughout the cluster in a dose-dependent manner,determining H3K27me3 deposition and chromatin condensation.In response to ABA,MARS decoys LHP1 away from the cluster and promotes the formation of a chromatin loop bringing together the MARNERAL SYNTHASE 1(MRN1)locus and a distal ABA-responsive enhancer.The enrichment of co-regulated lncRNAs in clustered meta-bolic genes in Arabidopsis suggests that the acquisition of novel non-coding transcriptional units may constitute an additional regulatory layer driving the evolution of biosynthetic pathways.

An intense laser pulse focused onto a plasma can excite nonlinear plasma waves.Under appropriate conditions,electrons from the background plasma are trapped in the plasma wave and accelerated to ultra-relativistic velocities.This scheme is called a laser wakefield accelerator.In this work,we present results from a laser wakefield acceleration experiment using a petawatt-class laser to excite the wakefields as well as nanoparticles to assist the injection of electrons into the accelerating phase of the wakefields.We find that a 10-cm-long,nanoparticle-assisted laser wakefield accelerator can generate 340 pC,10±1.86 GeV electron bunches with a 3.4 GeV rms convolved energy spread and a 0.9 mrad rms divergence.It can also produce bunches with lower energies in the 4–6 GeV range.

Machine learning(ML)applications in weather and climate are gaining momentum as big data and the immense increase in High-performance computing(HPC)power are paving the way.Ensuring FAIR data and reproducible ML practices are significant challenges for Earth system researchers.Even though the FAIR principle is well known to many scientists,research communities are slow to adopt them.Canonical Workflow Framework for Research(CWFR)provides a platform to ensure the FAIRness and reproducibility of these practices without overwhelming researchers.This conceptual paper envisions a holistic CWFR approach towards ML applications in weather and climate,focusing on HPC and big data.Specifically,we discuss Fair Digital Object(FDO)and Research Object(RO)in the DeepRain project to achieve granular reproducibility.DeepRain is a project that aims to improve precipitation forecast in Germany by using ML.Our concept envisages the raster datacube to provide data harmonization and fast and scalable data access.We suggest the Juypter notebook as a single reproducible experiment.In addition,we envision JuypterHub as a scalable and distributed central platform that connects all these elements and the HPC resources to the researchers via an easy-to-use graphical interface.

Predator-prey distance and latency to flee from an immobile predator： functional relationship and importance

When an immobile prey has detected an immobile predator nearby, predation risk is greater when the predator is closer. Consequently, prey flee with shorter latency as standing distance (predator-prey distance when both are still) decreases. Since it was first reported in 2009, this relationship has been confirmed in the few species studied. However, little is known about the functional relationship between standing distance and latency to flee (LF). We hypothesized that LF increases as standing distance increases at short distances, but reaches a plateau at longer distances where prey can escape reliably if attacked. We simulated immobile predators by moving slowly into positions near striped plateau lizards , stopping and then remaining immobile, and recording LF from the stopping time. LF increased from shorter to longer standing distances in a decelerating manner. The relationship was concave downward, and LF was indistinguishable among the longer standing distance groups. Latency to flee appears to reach a plateau or approach an asymptotic value as standing distance increases. The effect size of standing distance was large, indicating that sensitively adjusts LF to the level of risk associated with standing distance. Relationships between risk assessment and theoretical zones associated with risk, its assessment by prey, and escape decisions are discussed. Effect sizes of standing distance were substantial to large in all studies to date, indicating that standing distance is an important predation risk factor when both predator and prey are immobile.
