The use of entomopathogenic fungi (EF) in recent years has been highly effective against the different orders of insects considered pests of agricultural importance and their conidia have been commonly applied, but it has been reported that these are sensitive to the environmental conditions. For this reason, biopesticides products have been formulated based on secondary metabolites, recently. These biomolecules participate as biological control agent, such as: cyclic depsipeptides, amino acids, polyketides, polyphenols and terpenoids, affecting their morphology, life cycle and insect behavior. The use of secondary metabolites of entomopathogenic fungi opens the possibility of application in a more efficient way for the control of agricultural pests in a compatible with the environment and human health;therefore, it is important to know, analyzing the type of molecules, their effects, and their different methods of application.

The analysis of the systematic transitions in the forested landscape and the study of the forest fragmentation patterns allow us to deepen our understanding of the changes in the vegetation ground cover. The importance of knowing the intricate patterns of the land usage of the upper basin of the Amazon region is widely recognized. This zone is one of the most diverse biological areas in the world, is home to large areas of mature tropical cloud forest and demonstrates high probabilities of stable climatic conditions in light of global warming. The research quan- tiffed systematic transitions through the ＂loss＂ and ＂gain＂ of the different categories of landscape during the eighteen-year study period of the Ecuadorian Amazon Region （EAR）, the forest fragmentation patterns were also analyzed based on a set of indicators. Therefore, with respect to the entirety of the landscape, the results registered for the ground coverage in forested areas during the first period （1990-2000）, show a decrease of 6.99% and an increase of 0.68%; and during the second period （2000-2008）, show a decrease of 3.99% and an increase of 2.14%. It demonstrated that forest and agricultural areas tended to replace or be replaced by herbaceous vegetation faster than expected fortuitously. Finally, the indices of fragmentation signaled intense changes during the 1990-2000 period with a reduction during the period 2000-2008. Per- centages registered in the Largest Patch Index （LPI） were between 79.58%; 52.39% and 49.99% respectively; while the Patch Density （PD） varied between 0.04; 0.06 and 0.07. This suggests the propensity of for- est cover to remain intact. The results of this investigation suggest a tendency towards stability in Ecuador＇s Amazon landscape. This paper shows the procedure and application of the Krige Method (or Kriging) for the analysis of the power level radiated by a Base Station (also called Node B), through a group of samples of this power level, measured at different positions and distances. These samples were obtained using an spectrum analyzer, which will allow to have georeferenced measurements, to implement the interpolation process and generate coverage maps, making possible to know the power level distribution and therefore understand the behavior and performance of the Node B.

Arbovirus infections have increased worldwide in the last years and specific differential diagnosis may be difficult owing to their similar clinical presentations. Here we describe and compare the clinical manifestations of dengue and chikungunya fever. Material and Methods: In order to portray the clinical behavior of both diseases, a cross-sectional study was performed including patients insured by the Mexican Institute for Social Security (IMSS), their demographic data, and clinical signs and symptoms. Laboratory parameters were analyzed. Results: One thousand four hundred and ninety-five dengue and 1810 chikungunya cases were studied. All patients presented fever, whereas headache, myalgias, mild arthralgias, and ocular pain were more frequent in dengue cases. Severe incapacitating polyarthralgias, arthritis, and conjunctivitis were present only in chikungunya cases. Also, edema and exanthema were more frequent in patients with chikungunya. Liquid leak to tissues and hemorrhage were more frequent among dengue cases. Platelet counts were lower in hemorrhagic dengue (P volution and tended to return to normal from the fifth day. Discussion: The clinical features observed in this group of patients may contribute to the differential diagnosis of both diseases. The cardinal signs of severity were not present in all cases of any of the two diseases. It is important to consider these issues in order to establish an early diagnosis and improve the prognosis of patients.

Environmental Compensation Actions in Costa Rica: Disparity between Commitments and Actions

Introduction: Environmental compensation is a legal-administrative instrument used by agencies that supervise the environmental impact assessment (EIA) to offset irreversible impacts generated by development projects. The compensation is usually framed in the principle of ecological equivalence, which seeks to equate the losses due to the impact with a net environmental gain obtained by the compensatory actions. Methods: We analyzed the records of development projects that have merited an environmental compensation plan registered by the National Environmental Technical Secretariat of Costa Rica (SETENA) between January 2018 and June 2020. Results: Seventy-four projects were analyzed;just over 75% of them corresponded to infrastructure projects while the rest concerned exploitation activities of materials and resources. The main impacts that elicited compensation plans were: deforestation and destruction of riverbanks (13%), earthworks (15.5%), poor water management (15.5%), and administrative faults or non-compliance with environmental commitments (62%). The main compensatory measures conducted were: building school infrastructure (20% of the projects), support for environmental education programs (17%), and reforestation programs (>15%), although actions such as the purchase of school supplies, donation of equipment to local communities and the arrangement of roads and causeways were also recorded. In only three projects, the replacement of the impacted habitat was used as compensation for projected damage. Discussion: The registered compensatory measures do not endorse the spirit of return on components equivalent to those impacted that generate a net environmental gain and respond only to impacts that had not been considered during the preliminary evaluation of the project.
