Appendiceal neuroendocrine tumors(aNETs)are an uncommon neoplasm that is relatively indolent in most *** are typically diagnosed in younger patients than other neuroendocrine tumors and are often an incidental finding after an *** there are numerous clinical practice guidelines on management of a NETs,there is continues to be a dearth of evidence on optimal *** of these tumors is stratified according to risk of locoregional and distant ***,there is a lack of consensus regarding tumors that measure 1-2 *** these cases,some histopathological features such as size,tumor grade,presence of lymphovascular invasion,or mesoappendix infiltration must also be *** tomography or magnetic resonance imaging scans are recommended for evaluating the presence of additional disease,except in the case of tumors smaller than 1 cm without additional risk *** receptor scintigraphy or positron emission tomography with computed tomography should be considered in cases with suspected residual or distant *** main point of controversy is the indication for performing a completion right hemicolectomy after an initial appendectomy,based on the risk of lymph node *** main factor considered is tumor size and 2 cm is the most common threshold for indicating a *** factors such as mesoappendix infiltration,lymphovascular invasion,or tumor grade may also be *** the other hand,potential complications,and decreased quality of life after a hemicolectomy as well as the lack of evidence on benefits in terms of survival must be taken into *** this review,we present data regarding the current indications,outcomes,and benefits of a colectomy.

Approximating home ranges of humpback and fin whales in Drake Passage and Antarctica

Identifying home ranges—those areas traversed by individuals in their normal foraging,mating,and parenting activities—is an important aspect of cetacean *** these ranges facilitates identification of resource use and *** and humpback whales occur in Antarctica during the austral summer,but information regarding their home ranges is *** opportunistically collected whale sighting data from eight consecutive summer seasons spanning 2010–2017,we approximate the home ranges of humpback and fin whales around Drake Passage(DRA),West of Antarctic Peninsula(WAP),South Shetland Islands(SSI),an area northwest of the Weddell Sea(WED),and around the South Orkney Islands(SOI).Approximate home ranges are identified using Kernel density Estimation(Kde).Most fin whales occurred north and northwest of the SOI,which suggests that waters near these islands support concentrations of this *** humpback whales were observed around the SSI,but unlike fin whales,their distributions were highly variable in other *** suggests spatial segregation in areas where both species exist such as SOI,SSI,and *** redundancy analysis(pRDA)suggests that the distributions of these species are more affected by spatial variables(latitude,longitude)than by local scale variables such as sea surface temperature and *** study presents a visual approximation of the home ranges of fin and humpback whales,and identifies variation in the effects of space and environmental variables on the distributions of these whales at different spatial scales.

Patch isolation and shape predict plant functional diversity in a naturally fragmented forest

Aims It is known that taxonomic diversity can be predicted by the spatial configuration of the habitat,in particular by its area and degree of ***,taxonomic diversity is a poor predictor of ecosystem *** functional diversity is strongly linked to the func-tionality and stability of ecosystems,little is known about how changes in the spatial configuration of the habitat affect functional *** this study,we evaluated whether the spatial configuration of forest patches predicts the functional diversity of plants in a fragmented *** Five functional leaf traits(leaf dry matter content,leaf punch force,specific leaf area,leaf size and leaf thickness)were measured for 23 dominant plant species in 20 forest patches in a naturally fragmented forest on the yucatan ***-weighted multivariate and individual trait metrics of functional diversity were calculated and cor-related with size,degree of isolation and the shape of forest *** Findings Patch shape was negatively correlated with multivariate and individ-ual trait(leaf dry matter content and leaf size)metrics of functional *** isolation measures were also negatively correlated with individual trait(leaf dry matter content,leaf punch force and leaf size)metrics of functional *** other words,greater patch shape irregularity and isolation degree impoverish plant func-tional *** is the first report of the negative effects of patch shape irregularity and isolation on the functional diversity of plant communities in a forest that has been fragmented for a long time.

The municipality of Boa nova,in northeastern Brazil,is in an ecotone zone between the Caatinga and Atlantic Forest phytogeographic *** transition phytophysiognomy is seasonal forest and known locally as mata de cipó.In these phytophysiognomies there are lajedos,which are rock outcrops colonized by vegetation welladapted to extreme microclimatic variation and vegetation diversity is affected by the vegetation types of the surrounding *** to the singularity of these environments and the relevance of floristic studies for conservation,this work aimed to identify the species richness and compare the similarity of the flora on four rock outcrops in Boa *** flora was surveyed during exploratory walks along lajedos between 2016 and *** total,162 species were identified on the Boa nova *** flora has a composition and structure similar to semiarid outcrops,as well as endemic species that also occur in surrounding *** the proximity,a similarity index revealed there is floristic dissimilarity between the *** new occurrences were recorded for the region,five species are threatened with extinction(Aosa gilgiana,Ficus cyclophylla,Hippeastrum stigmovittatum,Pleroma caatingae and Trixis pruskii),and 43 species are common in anthropogenic *** reinforces the importance of actions to conserve these areas.

Comparative study measuring the dilatory effect of a mydriatic device(Mydriasert~) versus topical drops

AIM:To compare the mydriatic efficacy of an ophthalmic insert(Mydriasert,MY)versus phenylephrine and tropicamide(PT)eye ***:Two controlled,prospective,randomized,single-blind studies were *** the first study,a total of 80 eyes from 40 outpatient-clinic patients were *** drops were applied to the right eye,and a MY device was inserted in the left eye for *** until maximal pupil dilation for each eye was then *** the second study,80 eyes from 80 patients undergoing cataract surgery were *** dilation was achieved using either PT drops three-times for one hour prior to surgery(40 patients),or a MY device was inserted one hour prior to surgery(40 patients).RESULTS:In the first study,MY achieved superior mydriasis compared to PT eye drops at 90min(9.04±1.33mm vs 8.78±1.37mm,P=0.012).However MY took longer than PT drops to achieve maximal dilation,and mydriasis was inferior in eyes with MY compared to PT drops at 30min(7.21±1.73mm vs 8.22±1.43mm,P<0.001),the two groups only becoming similar by 60min(8.85±1.44mm vs 8.71±1.27mm,P=0.236).In the second study,both MY and PT achieved similar levels of mydriasis at the beginning of surgery(8.75±0.76mm with MY vs 8.77±0.63mm with PT),and also at the end of surgery(7.96±1.06mm with MY vs 8.32±0.72mm with PT),with no significant difference between groups(P=0.08).MY was well tolerated and cardiovascular effects were not influenced by dilation ***:MY could be a safe and efficacious alternative for *** mydriatic effect of MY is as good as conventional PT eye drops after 60min,and is superior after *** also maintains good pupil dilation during cataract surgery.

In recent decades,genetic advances in yield improvement in the major cereal crops,including wheat,has stagnated or proceeded at a slower rate than is required to meet future global food demand,particularly in the face of climate *** reverse this situation,and in view of the future climate scenario,there is a need to increase the genetic diversity of wheat to increase its productivity,quality,stability,and adaptation to local *** abundant genetic resources and literature are a basis for wheat ***,many species,such as wild relatives,landraces,and old cultivars have not been studied beyond their agronomic characteristics,highlighting the lack of understanding of the physiological and metabolic processes(and their integration) associated with higher productivity and resilience in limiting *** studies using wheat ancestors and modern cultivars may identify novel traits that have not previously been considered,or have been underestimated,during domestication and breeding,but that may contribute to future food *** review describes existing wheat genetic diversity and changes that occurred during domestication and breeding,and considers whether mining natural variation among wheat ancestors offers an opportunity to enhance wheat agronomic performance,spike architecture,canopy-and organ-level photosynthetic capacity,and responses to abiotic stress,as well as to develop new wheat hybrids.

Water-soluble hollow nanocrystals from self-assembly of AIEEactive Pt(II)metallomesogens

Luminescent hollow micro-and nanocrystals have been successfully obtained taking advantage of the self-assembly behavior and the aggregation-induced emission enhancement properties of several bispyrazolate Pt(II)metallomesogens decorated with four terminal alkyl ***-in-water droplets have been used to confine the Pt(II)compounds and drive them to be self-assembled via intermolecular Pt…Pt interactions into spherical aggregates of about 200 or 50 *** of the oil phase generates highly-stable aqueous dispersions of nanocrystals that emit a bright orange light as a result of the existence of^(3)MMLCT excited *** methods and conditions have been tested for studying the effect of several parameters such as the temperature and the stirring speed in the final particle size and in the polydispersity ***,the micro-and nanocrystals are able to entrap hydrophobic drugs between the alkyl chains of the compounds,forming stable dispersions of drug-loaded capsules in *** droplet method is applied in the area of metallomesogens for the first time to synthesize self-assembled Pt(II)nanocapsules,which opens a new field of study that could allow the use of these liquid crystal materials in biomedical applications.

Rupture behavior of the 2017 M_(W)6.6 Poso earthquake in Sulawesi,Indonesia

On May 29, 2017, the MW6.6 Poso earthquake occurred in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, causing moderate damages. The mainshock rupture and primary aftershock cluster occurred in the active Palolo-Sausu tectonic zone, and some aftershocks also took place around the Tokararu fault. However, the rupture mechanism of this earthquake and its relation to regional tectonics are not clear. In this study, the rupture process of the Poso mainshock is estimated by finite-fault waveform inversion, which is constrained by teleseismic bodies and surface waves. The rupture propagates upward unilaterally in a southwest-dipping moderate-angle(~34°) normal fault beneath Tokorondo Mountains, with a notable~15% initial moment release at the first 4 s of the ~12 s rupture duration. The average and peak slip are0.5 m and 1.5 m, respectively. The rupture velocity is relatively slow(less than 2.5 km/s), and the Coulomb stress changes due to the mainshock are obtained using the inverted coseismic slip.

Mechanically strong,flexible,and multi-responsive phase change films with a nacre-mimetic structure for wearable thermal management

Phase change materials(PCMs)are a highly promising candidate for thermal energy storage owing to their large latent heat and chemical ***,their intrinsic brittle induces poor flexibility and low mechanical strength,which limits them use for wearable thermal ***,the electrical insulation and weak solar absorption make them lack multi-responsive ***,we report a facile strategy to synthesize mechanically strong and flexible multi-responsive phase change films by stirring an aqueous dispersion of cellulose nanofibrils(CNFs),MXene(Ti_(2)C_(3))nanosheets,and polyethylene glycol(PEG),followed by air-drying self-assembly and coating with hydrophobic *** hydrogen bonds and nacre-mimetic synergistic toughening networks formed by ternary CNFs,Ti_(2)C_(3)nanosheets,and PEG endow films with high mechanical strength(16.7 MPa)and strain(10.4%),which are 18.6 and 8.7 times higher than those of pure PEG film,*** films exhibit outstanding flexibility and do not crack or fracture even when bent,twisted,and folded into a complex small ***,the laminar structure formed by the self-assembly Ti_(3)C_(2)nanosheets enhances electrical conductivity(3.95 S/m)and solar absorption,affording excellent electro-thermal(68.3%–81.0%)and solarthermal(85.6%–90.6%)conversion efficiency,thus achieving multi-response to external stimuli(electron/solar radiation).In addition,the as-prepared films also deliver large latent heat(136.1 J/g),outstanding cyclic and shape stability,leak-free encapsulation even under compressed at above 5000 times its weight,excellent hydrophobicity(131.4°),and self-cleaning *** work paves the way for developing flexible,mechanically strong,and self-cleaning phase change film with multi-responsive function for wearable thermal management devices under high humidity condition.

Compatible taper and stem volume equations for Larix kaempferi(Japanese larch) species of South Korea

In this study, compatible taper and stem volume equations were developed for Larix kaempferi species of South Korea. The dataset was split into two groups： 80% of the data were used in model fitting and the remaining 2o% were used for validation. The compatible MB76 equations were used to predict the diameter outside bark to a specific height, the height to a specific diameter and the stem volume of the species. The result of the stem volume analysis was compared with the existing stem volume model of Larix kaempferi species of South Korea which was developed by the Korea Forest Research Institute and with a simple volume model that was developed with fitting dataset in this study. The compatible model provided accurate prediction of the total stem volume when compared to the existing stem volume model and with a simple volume model. It is concluded that the compatible taper and stem volume equations are more convenient to use and therefore it is recommended to be applied in the Larix kaempferi species of South Korea.
