Integrated nuclear techniques for sedimentation assessment in Latin American region

The paper shows the novel techniques introduction in the region of Latin America and the Caribbean in order to strengthen the surveillance and monitoring of the sedimentation phenomenon in the surface water *** integrated use of the nuclear techniques allows a more complete assessment of water and land *** the development of a regional project,supported by the International Agency of Atomic Energy,Cuba participates as technical leader for 15 countries,to encourage and implement the integrated application of 3 nuclear techniques(Fallout Radionuclides(137Cs,7Be,210pb),Compound Specific Stable Isotopes(fatty acids of the(e)13C)and the Isotopic Hydrology(18O,2H,3H).The methodology used in the last studies referred to RLA 5076 Project is to apply the integration of these three techniques allows evaluating,in the hydraulic facilities and surface water reservoirs,the negative sedimentation impacts in natural and anthropic process as environmental and social *** techniques evaluate the sedimentation process and its synergy,obtaining since the soil quantification in the landscape,definition the soil origin deposited until the dynamic characterization of the water body as soil *** integrated application of these nuclear techniques in the Project RLA-5076 confirms it as a useful tool to support the decisions makers in the definition of the national strategies and programs related to the land and the water resources *** the support of the IAEA projects in the Latin American and Caribbean region,has been evidenced an important increment in the use of these novel techniques.

Virtual Transmission Solution Based on Battery Energy Storage Systems to Boost Transmission Capacity

The increasing penetration of variable renewable energy(VRE)generation along with the decommissioning of conventional power plants in Chile,has raised several operational challenges in the Chilean National Power Grid(NPG),including transmission congestion and VRE *** mitigate these limitations,an innovative virtual transmission solution based on battery energy storage systems(BESSs),known as grid booster(GB),has been proposed to increase the capacity of the main 500 kV corridor of the *** paper analyzes the dynamic performance of the GB using a wide-area electromagnetic transient(EMT)model of the *** GB project,composed of two 500 MVA BESS units at each extreme of the 500 kV corridor,allows increasing the transmission capacity for 15 min during N-1 contingencies,overcoming transmission limitations under normal operation conditions while maintaining system stability during *** dynamic behavior of the GB is also analyzed to control power flow as well as voltage *** results show that the GB is an effective solution to allow greater penetration of VRE generation while maintaining system stability in the NPG.

Influence of Omega 3 Fatty Acid Supplementation on Phase Angle Values of People Living with HIV/AIDS with Lipodystrophy Secondary to Antiretroviral Therapy: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Objective: The measurement of phase angles is an important monitoring parameter and supplementation with omega-3 could promote benefits by modulating the electrical potential of membranes and increasing body cell mass. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation on the phase angle of people living with HIV/AIDS. Methods: In this study, 63 individuals of all genders who were undergoing outpatient follow-up and showed lipodystrophy due to highly active antiretroviral therapy were analyzed. Our sample consisted of two groups, one that received supplementation containing 2550 mg of omega-3/day (1080 mg of eicosapentaenoic acid and 720 mg of docosahexaenoic acid) for three months (n = 32) and another that underwent nutrition guidance (n = 31). Phase angle and body cell mass were assessed for both groups and compared at the beginning of research (T0) and after our intervention (T1) for each group separately. Results: Phase angle averaged 6.45° ± 1.06 SD. The comparison between T0 and T1 showed a significant increase in phase angle and body cell mass, whereas the guidance group showed a decrease in body cell mass at T1 in relation to T0, with a significant p-value. Variance in phase angle between moments showed significant values between T0 and T1 in the supplementation group for all genders. Conclusion: Omega-3 positively modulated patients phase angle and body cell mass, but we emphasize the need for other studies that can solidify knowledge about supplementation dosage and intervention time.

About the Observed Asymmetry between Matter and Antimatter

Some consequences, due to the existence of a pair of decoupled Schrödinger-like but relativistic quantum mechanics wave equations, are explored. It is shown that one equation directly describes the quantum states of a single spin-0 particle, and the other one indirectly describes the quantum states of the corresponding antiparticle. In correspondence with the matter-antimatter symmetry, for a Coulomb potential, a charge conjugation operation transforms the second equation in the first one. However, if a particle could interact with itself (gravitationally or electrically) due to the spread of its wavefunction, the C-symmetry could be broken;therefore, matter and antimatter could be distinguished. Under these assumptions, it is deducted the impossibility of the existence of particles and antiparticles with a mass larger than the Plank mass (mP), or with the absolute value of the charge larger than the Plank charge (qP). It is proposed the existence of primordial antimatter electrical sinks. It is also suggested that all macroscopic matter objects with a mass m > mP, and all macroscopic antimatter bodies with a charge |q| > qP should not be quantum but classical objects. It is argued that these findings could explain the absence of antimatter with a complicated structure and partially explain the excess of charged matter in the known Universe.

Processing of Aerosol Particles in Convective Cumulus Clouds:Cases Study in the Mexican East Pacific

In the Mexican Intertropical Convergence Zone, particle size distributions within 500 m of cloud boundaries at altitudes of 1000, 2500, and 4200 m, were compared against size distributions at the same levels but 1500 m away from the clouds. The differences in the distributions near and far from the cloud are related to processes that may change particle properties inside the cloud. Chemical changes in the aerosols are deduced from the particles＇ refractive index, as derived from comparisons with the scattering coeflcient measured by a nephelometer. An analysis of ten cloud systems indicates that vertical transport of cloud base aerosol followed by entrainment/detrainment is the cloud processing signature most frequently observed in the comparisons （65%）. Changes in the chemical composition are observed in approximately 20% of the cases and another 20% of the cases showed removal by precipitation. About 5% of the comparisons showed clear evidence of changes by coalescence. The principal effect of these cloud-processed aerosols is observed in the increase of optical depth in the layer from 30 m to 4200 m in the near-cloud regions, in comparison with the atmosphere further from clouds.

Hamilton-Jacobi and Lagrange Formulations of Relativistic Quantum Mechanics Wave Equations with Solutions with Only-Positive and Only-Negative Kinetic Energies

Using the Hamilton-Jacobi and the Lagrange formalisms, a pair of relativistic quantum mechanics equations are obtained by abduction. These equations, in contrast with the Klein-Gordon and other relativistic quantum mechanics equations, have no solutions with both positive and negative kinetic energies. The equation with solutions with only positive kinetic energy values describes a spin-0 particle of mass m, which is moving at relativistic speeds in a scalar potential. The wavefunctions and the energies corresponding to the associated antiparticle can be obtained by solving the other equation, which only has solutions with negative kinetic energy values.
