Leishmaniasis in the Argentine Republic: Temporal and geographical distribution from 2013 to 2017

Objective: To assess the temporal and geographical distribution of confirmed cases of cutaneous, mucocutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis in the Argentine Republic from 2013 to 2017. Methods: A retrospective study was carried out using data collected from the Integrated Surveillance Bulletin database of the National System of Health Surveillance. Confirmed cases of cutaneous, mucocutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis up to the 52 nd epidemiological week of each year was included. Results: In the 5 years period, 1 295 confirmed leishmaniasis cases were reported in the Argentine Republic. One thousand twenty-eight(1 028) cases corresponded to cutaneous leishmaniasis(87.10%), being the most common type of leishmaniasis. Mucocutaneous leishmaniasis was in the second place in the country with 115 cases reported, mostly in the Northwest and Northeast regions. A total of 52 individuals with visceral leishmaniasis were identified and Misiones Province was the most affected. Conclusions: It is important to analyze the temporal and geographical distribution of leishmaniasis in order to provide an adequate management and surveillance.

The existence of multigenic families in the mevalonate pathway suggests divergent functional roles for pathway components involved in the biosynthesis of plant sterols. Squalene epoxidases （SQEs） are key components of this pathway, and Squalene Epoxidase 1 （SQE1） has been identified as a fundamental enzyme in this biosynthetic step. In the present work, we extended the characterization of the remaining SQE family members, phylogenetically resolving between true SQEs and a subfamily of SQE-like proteins that is exclusive to Brassicaceae. Functional characterization of true SQE family members, Squalene Epox- idase 2 （SQE2） and Squalene Epoxidase 3 （SQE3）, indicates that SQE3, but not SQE2, contributes to the bulk SQE activity in Arabidopsis, with sqe3-1 mutants accumulating squalene and displaying sensitivity to ter- binafine. We genetically demonstrated that SQE3 seems to play a particularly significant role in embryo development. Also, SQE1 and SQE3 both localize in the endoplasmic reticulum, and SQE3 can functionally complement SQEI. Thus, SQE1 and SQE3 seem to be two functionally unequal redundant genes in the pro- motion of plant SQE activity in Arabidopsis.

Effect of double-balloon enteroscopy on pancreas:An experimental porcine model

AIM： To evaluate the effect of double-balloon enteros- copy （DBE） on pancreas histology and levels of pancre- atic enzymes. METHODS： Conventional upper gastrointestinal endos- copy was performed on five control pigs. Oral DBE was performed with an EN-450T5 enteroscope on 20 pigs. Two experimental groups （10 pigs each） were defined according to DBE duration： 90 rain for Group 1 and 140 min for Group 2. During oral insertion, the balloons were not inflated in the descending part of the duodenum to avoid the minor duodenal papilla. Serum amy- lase, lipase and C-reactive protein （CRP） levels were monitored before the procedure and repeated every 30 min until the exploration was finished, as well as 24 h and 7 d after. After the procedure and for a total of 7 d, the pigs were observed twice a day for signs of de- creased activity, irritability, vomiting or anorexia. Gross and microscopic examination of the pancreas was per- formed on day 7. RESULTS： All animals tolerated DBE without clini- cal manifestations of acute pancreatitis. Experimental groups had higher levels of enzymes than the control group at 24 h. Throughout the exploration, the amylase levels increased significantly above the baseline 24 h after DBE, although the increase was not statistically significant and did not reach 20% of the baseline. An increase in lipase and CRP was observed at 24 h after the procedure, although by day 7, all enzymatic lev- els had returned to baseline. No differences between Groups 1 and 2 were found for any enzyme and sam- pling site during and after the procedure. Similarly, no correlation between insertion depth and enzyme levels was observed. Direct in situ and post-removal inspec- tion of the pancreas did not show any evidence of fluid collection, abscesses or hemorrhage. Histological examination of the pancreas from Groups 1 and 2 re- vealed the existence of focal areas （0.14-0.26 mm2） of ischemic necrosis in 47.4% of the animals. Microbiota from <i>Helix aspersa</i>Müller in Barcelona Area (Spain)

In recent decades snail consumption has been increasing throughout Europe. The Heliciculture meets this need and gets snail farms, in order to get consistent production in the shortest possible time. The research provided, has a main objective to establish the microbiota of Helix aspersa Müller, both from healthy animals, and individuals with gastrointestinal processes. The samples selected for the study were feces obtained from snails collected in both breeding farms as field snails. In the case, farm animals were selected apparently form healthy individuals and others were with signs of gastrointestinal process study. Aliquots of each sample were plated on a range of culture media and incubated under different conditions of temperature and respiration. From the results we can note that the healthy snails (farmed or free-living) have been isolated and identified mostly, as strains belonging to the genera Pediococcus, Lactobacillus and Lactococcus and five strains of yeasts of the genera Candida and Cryptococcus. Individuals suffering from gastrointestinal disturbances processes have been isolated in high proportion species of Klebsiella, Pantoea, Citrobacter and Enterobacter. The results obtained indicate that the snails with health problems reduce the presence of strains of Lactobacillus and Lactococcus in favor of increasing and/or establishing colonization by strains of Enterobacteriaceae.

Hypertrophic osteoarthropathy as the cause of situs inversus totalis: A case report

Situs inversus totalis is a very rare anomaly. Even more, cases of situs inversus totalis plus hypertrophic osteoarthropathy. A woman presented with cyanosis, clubbing of fingers and distal edema. Chest examination revealed heart sounds at the right side and a heart murmur. Abdominal examination showed liver dullness in the left side. The X-rays showed dextrocardia and liver in the left side. The Upper digestive barium test showed the stomach in the right side, the barium enema showed caecum on the left. Treatment for heart failure improved the patient’s condition and she remained well. When she became pregnant, developed heart failure again and required admission. She was compensated and continued her pregnancy. 3 years later she developed heart and respiratory refractory failure, was admitted again and after few days she died. We report this case of situs inversus totalis in association with hypertrophic osteoarthropathy because of the rarity of this anomaly.

Enzymes of Entomopathogenic Fungi, Advances and Insights

Entomopathogenic fungi (EF) are recognized biological control agents of insects. Basically, the entomopathogenic fungi pathogen activity depends on the ability of its enzymatic equipment, consisting of lipases, proteases and chitinases, which are in charge of breaking down the insect’s integument. Lipases are the first enzymes synthesized by the entomopathogenic fungi. Recently, a cytochrome P450 subfamily, referred as CYP52XI and MrCYP52 has been identified in Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium robertsii, respectively. These break down long-chain alkenes and fatty acids to become initial nutrients. Subsequently, subtilisin type (Pr1) proteases sintetize;these enzymes are considered as virulence indicators and they are regulated by a signal transduction mechanism activated by the protein kinase A (PKA) mediated by AMPc. Through the employment of genetic engineering, it has been possible to increase virulence producing Pr1 recombinants with Androctonus australis neurotoxins or with chitinases, reducing the insect’s time of death. In the course of time, the Pr1 protease gene has presented evolutionary adaptations by gene duplication or horizontal transfer infecting different orders of insects. In the same way, the entomopathogenic fungi chitinases have presented a functional diversification. Currently, these have been phylogenetically classified into three subgroups, in accordance to the catalytic site domain and the chitin binding domain. The chitinolytic activity has increased through a directed evolution processes and genetic recombination with Bombyx mori chitinase. Recently, enzymes have been employed as control agents for insects and phytopathogenic fungi (disease originator) opening new potentialities in order to improve the entomopathogenic fungi use. Offside Detection System Using an Infrared Camera Tracking System

This paper describes an experimental offside detection system that will be capable of detecting offside passes during a game of soccer. Soccer is the world’s most popular and most televised sport. In recent years, FIFA has implemented goal line technology in order to end controversial goals/missed goals during high profile competitive matches. The most contentious aspect of the sport is the offside rule and its many controversial calls or lack of calls. Sometimes the linesmen cannot see the passage of playing fast enough to make a correct decision. Being similar to goal line technology, people have requested offside technology to help the linesmen and to reduce the number of incorrect offside calls in a game. This paper describes a working offside detection system that can accurately detect offside passes. Positional data was exported from a VICON infrared motion tracking camera system and a MATLAB script was written so that it can analyze the positions of the players and the ball and determine if a pass was offside.
