A procedure to recognize individual discontinuities in rock mass from measurement while drilling(MWD)technology is developed,using the binary pattern of structural rock characteristics obtained from in-hole images for calibration.Data from two underground operations with different drilling technology and different rock mass characteristics are considered,which generalizes the application of the methodology to different sites and ensures the full operational integration of MWD data analysis.Two approaches are followed for site-specific structural model building:a discontinuity index(DI)built from variations in MWD parameters,and a machine learning(ML)classifier as function of the drilling parameters and their variability.The prediction ability of the models is quantitatively assessed as the rate of recognition of discontinuities observed in borehole logs.Differences between the parameters involved in the models for each site,and differences in their weights,highlight the site-dependence of the resulting models.The ML approach offers better performance than the classical DI,with recognition rates in the range 89%to 96%.However,the simpler DI still yields fairly accurate results,with recognition rates 70%to 90%.These results validate the adaptive MWD-based methodology as an engineering solution to predict rock structural condition in underground mining operations.

The paper reviews the development of prediction formulas for the fragmentation from bench blasting.Much attention has been paid to the Kuz-Ram model,its development and errors,and the mean vs.median misunderstanding.The work by the US Bureau of Mines(USBM)and Chung and Katsabanis are also reviewed,as well as the two Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre(JKMRC)models,i.***.the crush zone model(CZM)and the two-component model(TCM),which were developed to cope with the underestimation of blasting fines.The change brought by the Swebrec distribution and the associated Kuznetsov-Cunningham-Ouchterlony(KCO)model is described.Studying distribution-free fragment sizes xP for an arbitrary mass passing P led to the discovery of the fragmentation-energy fan,and with the help of dimensional analysis,to the new fragmentation prediction model xP-frag,which has much lower errors than those of the Kuz-Ram and CZM models.

Recent studies highlight the strong correlation between infectious diseases and the development of neuropsychiatric disorders.In this editorial,we comment on the article“Anti-infective therapy durations predict psychological stress and laparoscopic surgery quality in pelvic abscess patients”by Zhang et al,published in the recent issue of the World Journal of Psychiatry 2023;13(11):903-911.Our discussion highlighted the potential consequences of anxiety,depression,and psychosis,which are all linked to bacterial,fungal,and viral infections,which are relevant to the impact of inflammation on the sequelae in mental health as those we are observing after the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.We focus specifically on the immune mechanisms triggered by inflammation,the primary contributor to psychiatric complications.Importantly,pathophysiological mechanisms such as organ damage,post-injury inflammation,and infectioninduced endocrine alterations,including hypocortisolism or autoantibody formation,significantly contribute to the development of chronic low-grade inflammation,promoting the emergence or development of psychiatric alterations in susceptible individuals.As inflammation can have long-term effects on patients,a multidisciplinary treatment plan can avoid complications and debilitating health issues,and it is crucial to recognize and address the mental health implications.

The estimated world prevalence of hepatitis B virus(HBV)infection is 316 million.HBV infection was identified in 1963 and nowadays is a major cause of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)despite universal vaccination programs,and effective antiviral therapy.Long-term administration of nucleos(t)ide analogues(nA)has been the treatment of choice for chronic hepatitis B during the last decades.The nA has shown a good safety profile and high efficacy in controlling viral replication,improving histology,and decreasing the HCC incidence,decompensation,and mortality.However,the low probability of HBV surface antigen seroclearance made necessary an indefinite treatment.The knowledge,in recent years,about the different phases of the viral cycle,and the new insights into the role of the immune system have yielded an increase in new therapeutic approaches.Consequently,several clinical trials evaluating combinations of new drugs with different mechanisms of action are ongoing with promising results.This integrative literature review aims to assess the knowledge and major advances from the past of hepatitis B,the present of nA treatment and withdrawal,and the future perspectives with combined molecules to achieve a functional cure.

Agricultural expansion and intensiﬁcation are having a huge impact on plant and arthropod diversity and abun-dance,affecting food availability for farmland birds.Difﬁcult food access,in turn,can lead to immunosuppression and a higher incidence of parasites.In the studies designed to examine changes in the diet of birds and their par-asites,metabarcoding is proving particularly useful.This technique requires mini-barcodes capable of amplifying the DnA of target organisms from fecal environmental DnA.To help to understand the impact of agricultural expansion on biodiversity,this study sought to design and identify mini-barcodes that might simultaneously as-sess diet and intestinal parasites from the feces of farmland birds.The capacity to identify diet and parasites of 2 existing and 3 newly developed mini-barcodes was tested“in silico”in relation to the behavior of a reference eukaryotic barcode.Among the newly designed mini-barcodes,MiniB18S_81 showed the higher taxonomic cover-age of eukaryotic taxa and a greater ampliﬁcation and identiﬁcation capacity for diet and parasite taxa.Moreover,when it was tested on fecal samples from 5 different steppe bird species,MiniB18S_81 showed high taxonomic resolution of the most relevant diet and parasite phyla,Arthropoda,nematoda,Platyhelminthes,and Apicomplexa at the order level.Thus,the mini-barcode developed emerges as an excellent tool to simultaneously provide detailed information regarding the diet and parasites of birds,essential for conservation and management.

Objective:To describe the microbiological characteristics in emphysematous pyelonephritis(EPn),demonstrate the frequency of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase(ESBL)microorganisms,and determine if these microorganisms are associated with the prognosis of patients with EPn.Methods:We conducted a retrospective study in patients with a diagnosis of EPn in a tertiary care hospital of the northeast region of Mexico during the period from January 2011 to January 2016.Clinical variables were analyzed to determine association with the presence of ESBL-producing microorganisms.Statistical significance was set with pnts were included;55(87.3%)of them were females,with a median age of 55(interquartile range:45-65)years.Conservative management was indicated in 38.1%;42.9%were treated with ureteral stent;12.7%with open or percutaneous drainage;15.8%with early nephrectomy;and 9.5%with delayed nephrectomy.Reported mortality was 13(20.6%)cases;23(36.5%)cases required admission to the intensive care unit.The most frequent microorganism isolated was Escherichia coli(n=34,53.9%).ESBL microorganisms were found in 31.7%of the population.no significant association of ESBL was found with admission to the intensive care unit,or with increased mortality.Conclusions:To our knowledge,this is the first study that evaluates ESBL microorganisms as a prognostic factor in EPn.Risk factors associated with a poor prognosis in patients with EPn have been described.The microbiological factors,specifically ESBL-producing bacteria,do not seem to influence in the prognosis of these patients.

Larch wood is structurally classifi ed in many countries as one of conifers with the highest load-bearing capacity(strength class of C30).The Spanish visual classifi cation regulation only assigns a strength class to 4 pine woods:Laricio pine(Pinus nigra Arn.var.Salzmannii),Silvestre pine(Pinus sylvestris L.),Radiata pine(Pinus radiata D.Don),and Pinaster pine(Pinus pinaster Ait.).This work adds to the number of structurally characterised species by creating a visual classifi cation table for Japanese larch wood(Larix kaempferi(Lamb.)Carr.)which diff erentiates between 2 visual classes,MEG-1 and MEG-2.Characteristic strength values were calculated for each class(fk,MEG-1=31.80 MPa,f k,MEG-2=24.55 MPa),mean module of elasticity(E 0,mean,MEG-1=13,082 MPA,E 0,mean,MEG-2=12,320 MPA)and density(ρk,MEG-1=456.6 kg m−3,ρk,MEG-2=469.1 kg m−3),before fi nally assigning a strength class of C30 to visual class MEG-1,and a strength class of C24 to visual class MEG-2.

I analyzed the spatial distribution and structure of trees in a cross timber forest in the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve （Pawhuska, Oklahoma, USA）. I mapped and measured diameter of all stems, saplings （〉1.5 m tall） and dead trees in a 4-ha plot. The stand was dominated by Quercus stellata and Q. marilandica. In total, I mapped 7,636 trees, consisting of 6,785 Q. stellata, 846 Q. marilandica, 2 Celtis occidentalis, 1 Fraxinus pensilvanica and 2 Prunus americana. For saplings, I mapped 54 Q. stellata and 21 Q. marilandica. The size class distribution of the two dominant species did not differ. The dominant mortality class was “standing dead”, while I only found saplings less than 2 m tall. The spatial distribution of the species indicated segregation in the use of the environment, generating a clumped univariate distribution of stems of the same species within radii of 30 m, but repulsion outside 30 m. This segregation can be explained by the different ecological requirements of each species.
