In this work the authors first summarily describe the main topics that were the subject of their post-graduate activity in fiber sensing at the Applied Optics Group of University of Kent in the late 1980s and early 1990s. After their return to Porto, Portugal, the know-how acquired during their stay at Kent and the collaboration paths that followed between the University of Porto and University of Kent were instrumental in the start-up and progress of optical fiber sensing activity in Portugal. The main topics addressed in this field, the description of some of the relevant developments achieved in recent years, the present situation and the guidelines for the future research and development activity in Portugal in fiber sensing will be the core of this work.

The use of orthobiologics as a novel therapy for the treatment of numerous musculoskeletal disorders has increased considerably over the past ***,there are multiple alternatives available as suitable treatments;however,the use of autologous blood-derived products such as platelet-rich plasma(PRP),bone marrow aspirate(BMA)and BMA concentrate(BMAC),specifically,is *** many investigations attempted to demonstrate the effectiveness of these therapies,even with positive results,the literature lacks standardized protocols and overall accuracy in study designs,which leads to variance and difficulty in reproducibility of *** efficacy of PRP for the treatment of cartilage,bone and muscle tissues is well *** BMAC has generated optimistic results for the same purposes,its applicability in clinical trials is still relatively recent when compared to *** products demonstrate the potential to set forth reparative processes,each in their own distinct *** combination of these biological products has been previously proposed,yet little is known about their *** indicates that growth factor,cytokine,and chemokine profiles seen in both PRP and BMAC vary but are likely to work synergistically to enhance musculoskeletal *** products seem to work well without PRP;however,the addition of PRP to BMAC has been shown to act as a rich and natural source of culture medium for stem cells located either peripherally or in the bone marrow ***,additional variables associated with the use of BMAC and PRP in orthopedics must be further evaluated in order to consolidate the efficacy of this therapeutic strategy.

Relationship between Nutritional Status and Functional Capacity for Older People

Functional capacity is the condition of an individual living independently and the lack of it for preparing and eating food, which is a factor that can result in malnutrition and deserves the attention of professionals and his family members. Then, the aim of this work was to evaluate the relationship between nutritional status and functional capacity for older adults using anthropometric measures and questionnaires for activities of daily and instrumental living. It was an epidemiological cross-sectional study using a representative sample of older adults selected from a previous study about quality of life in a Botucatu city, Sao Paulo. Brazil. The sample size was calculated considering 95% of reliability and 5% of error margin, resulting from a total of 365 individuals of both sexes but only 361 of them completed the protocol. Data included sociodemographic and morbidities questionnaires, activities of daily and instrumental living (ADL and IADL) and an-thropometric variables. 62.6% of the older were women, 44.68% were hypertensive, 28.81% were diabetic and 15.51% had hypercholesterolemia. 94.24% and 92.42% of the older were fully independent for ADL and IADL, respectively. Associations between ADL with marital status and schooling were found as well as with IADL. Also, it was found association with IADL and heart disease. Regarding anthropometry most of measures when compared men and women were significant. No significant association was found between nutritional status and ADL. A logistic regression model was fitted considering ADL as a response variable showed BMI as a protection factor and WC as a risk factor for dependence. For IADL, heart disease was a risk factor for dependence. In conclusion, low weight and increased waist circumference have influence in a functional capacity of older adults according to the activities daily living (ADL) and heart disease for IADL.

One Pr（Ⅲ） lanthanide ion complex was initially synthesized and characterized by TGA-DSC in air atmosphere, as well as characterized by CHN elemental analysis, defining the stoichiometric ratio as Pr（DMBz）3. The gaseous products evolved during the thermal decomposition were also monitored in N2 atmosphere employing TGA/FT-IR system. A crystal structure is obtained by state-of-the-art powder X-rays diffraction methods measured in conventional laboratory equipment and refined by the Rietveld method, which defined it as a monoclinic system of the space group P21/C with a polymeric crystal structure, [Pr（DMBZ）3]n. FT-IR theoretical spectrum and time-dependent density functional theory（TD-DFT） were calculated from TGA-DSC and crystalline system data. The experimental and theoretical FT-IR spectra present a high correlation degree when the main stretching bands are compared, while the energy transfer（HOMO - LUMO） in their neighborhoods suggests the main contributions of the light-emitting states.

CLIGEN is a stochastic weather generator that creates statistically representative timeseries of daily and sub-daily point-scale weather variables from observed monthly statistics and other parameters. CLIGEN precipitation timeseries are used as climate input for various risk-assessment modelling applications as an alternative to observe long-term, high temporal resolution records. Here, we queried gridded global climate datasets (TerraClimate, ERA5, GPM-IMERG, and GLDAS) to estimate various 20-year climate statistics and obtain complete CLIGEN input parameter sets with coverage of the African and South American continents at 0.25 arc degree resolution. The estimation of CLIGEN precipitation parameters was informed by a ground-based dataset of >10,000 locations worldwide. The ground observations provided target values to fit regression models that downscale CLIGEN precipitation input parameters. Aside from precipitation parameters, CLIGEN’s parameters for temperature, solar radiation, etc. were in most cases directly calculated according to the original global datasets. Cross-validation for estimated precipitation parameters quantified errors that resulted from applying the estimation approach in a predictive fashion. Based on all training data, the RMSE was 2.23 mm for the estimated monthly average single-event accumulation and 4.70 mm/hr for monthly maximum 30-min intensity. This dataset facilitates exploration of hydrological and soil erosional hypotheses across Africa and South America.

Accurate evaluation of landslide susceptibility is very important to ensure the safe operation of mountain *** Sichuan-Tibet Highway,which traverses the east of the Tibetan Plateau,frequently encounters natural *** studies generally use statistical methods to analyze the hazards along the Sichuan-Tibet *** this research,we present two road factors,namely aspect to road and road profile to increase the accuracy of landslide susceptibility mapping by considering the influence of landslide movement direction on ***,the aspect to road,which represents the impact of different landslide movement directions on the highway,was extracted by combining road direction with mountain ***,the road profile,which reflects the subgrade structure between the road and surrounding mountains,was extracted according to the terrain ***,the landslide susceptibility maps were produced based on the random forest(RF)method by using 473 landslides and 10 conditioning factors,including road factors(aspect to road,road profile)and primitive factors(slope,aspect,curvature,relief amplitude,peak ground acceleration,crustal movement velocity,faults,rainfall).The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve(AUC)and the Gini importance were used to evaluate the performance of proposed road *** AUC values on two groups that add road factors and only use primitive factors were 0.8517 and 0.8243,*** Gini importance indicated that road profile(0.123)and aspect to road(0.116)have a significant contribution to landslides compared with the primitive *** results of multi-collinearity analysis and frequency ratio confirmed the suitability of the road factors for predicting hazards along the highway.

The objective of this work was to study the effect of different planting densities on the development and production of “Roxo de Valinhos” green figs for industry, in the campo das Vertentes-MG region. The experiment was installed at the Risoleta Neves Experimental Field—CERN/EPAMIG. The plants used were three years old and were arranged in three randomized blocks, subject to three different planting densities, with spacings ranging from 1 m (4000 plants·ha-1), 1.5 m (2666 plants·ha-1), and 2 m (2000 plants·ha-1) between plants in the planting line and 2.5 m between row for all planting densities. The average length of the branches (m), average number of fruits per branch, average number of fruits per plant, average weight of fruits, average yield per plant and the average yield per hectare (kg) were evaluated. It was verified that, there were no significant differences in the length of branch and in the average weight of fruit, in the three densities of fig tree planting. (4000 plants·ha-1), the average number of fruits per branch (7.5), per plant (55.87) and yield per plant (878.93 kg) were lower, however. The average yield per hectare (3515.73 kg) was higher than in other growing densities. It is concluded that, the higher density of plants (4000 plants·ha-1), provides the highest productivity per area, without damages to the quality of the fruits.

Acoustic emission monitoring is often used in the diagnosis of electrical and mechanical incipient faults in the high voltage apparatus. Partial discharges are a major source of insulation failure in electric power transformers, and the differentiation from other sources of acoustic emission is of the utmost importance. This paper reports the development of a new sensor concept - a fiber laser sensor based on a phase-shifted chirped fiber grating - for the acoustic emission detection of incipient faults in oil-filled power transformers. These sensors can be placed in the inner surface of the transformer tank wall, not affecting the insulation integrity of the structure and improving fault detection and location. The performance of the sensing head is characterized and compared for different surrounding media： air, water, and oil. The results obtained indicate the feasibility of this sensing approach for the industrial development of practical solutions.

Do Bt Transgenic Events Alter the Phenotypic Stability of Maize Hybrids?

Transgene insert location in the genome through different methods is random. Thus, alterations in the expression of desired trait may occur, as well as alterations in the expression of other characteristics of receptor plant. The purpose of this study was to compare Bt transgenic maize hybrids and the respective conventional isogenic hybrid in relation to adaptability and phenotypic stability. Field trails were set up in four locations of Minas Gerais, Brazil (campo do Meio, Lavras, Madre de Deus and Paragua?u). A randomized complete block design was used, with three replications, and the treatment structure was a factorial 6 × 2, with six hybrids in the transgenic and conventional versions. Plant and ear height and grain yield were evaluated. To estimate stability, the Anicchiarico, Wricke and AMMI methodologies were used. Grain yield and ear height of the transgenic hybrids and their respective conventional isogenic hybrid did not differ. There are differences in the phenotypic stability between transgenic hybrids with Bt technology and their counterpart conventional isogenic hybrid.
