A population analysis was made using data of the grunt Pomadasys panamensis. The information is from the catch from 260 hauls in estuarine waters, open-ocean waters, and off the coast of Sinaloa and northern Nayarit, Mexico, in the southeastern Gulf of California. The area of influence is about 120,000 km2 and includes about a third of the drag area of the largest shrimp fleet of the American Pacific. The average length in the population was 210 mm. The maximum length was 430 mm and the minimum was 50 mm. The analysis for the frequency distributions of the lengths and the multinomial solution produced representative modal groups for 160 mm, 190 mm, and 230 mm. The simulation of the biomass density gave an estimate close to 90 t, with 650,000 organisms before starting the fishing season in the region. The density was 0.19 kg ha–1. The colonization was 0.42% or 42 %. The model was validated using the Aikaikae criterion (AIC). The results provide an overview of the initial biomass densities and population structure of the species caught as bycatch, demonstrating the importance of this species abundance in the shrimp fishery, and generating a source of monetary income to the crew of the fishing fleet. The persistence of the species to fishing provides an example to study the mechanisms of survival.

The copolymer poly(D,l-lactide-co-glycolide) is one of the most interesting polymers for medical applications. This interest is justified by the fact that it is bioreabsorbable, biocompatible and non-toxic, while its degradation kinetics can be modified by the copolymerization ratio of the monomers. In this study, copolymers were synthesised at 175?C by opening the rings of the cyclic dimers of the D,l-lactide and glycolide monomers in the presence of stannous octoate initiator and lauryl alcohol co-initiator. The application of vacuum to the reaction medium, coupled with adequate stirring, is essential for obtaining good results. The following analytical techniques were used to characterise the synthesised copolymers: Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetry (TG), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Both the input monomers and the reaction products were analysed. Important characteristics, such as melting temperature, glass transition temperature, thermal stability, chemical composition and the ratio of the monomers in the synthesised copolymer, were obtained from these analyses. These results helped to infer the absence of residual monomers in the synthesised copolymers.

Modification signs in extreme weather events may be directly related to alterations in the thermodynamic panorama of the atmosphere that need to be better understood. This study aimed to make a first interconnection between climate extremes and thermodynamic patterns in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Maximum and minimum air temperature and precipitation extreme indices from two surface meteorological stations (ABOV and STCZ) and instability indices based on temperature and humidity from radiosonde observations (SBGl) were employed to investigate changes in the periods 1964-1980 (P1), 1981-2000 (P2), and 2001-2020 (P3). Statistical tests were adopted to determine the significance and magnitude of trends. The frequency of warm (cold) days and warm (cold) nights are increasing (decreasing) in the city. Cold (Warm) extremes are changing with greater magnitude in ABOV (STCZ) than in STCZ (ABOV). In ABOV, there is a significant increase of +84 mm/decade in the rainfall volume associated with severe precipitation (above the 95th percentile) and most extreme precipitation indices show an increase in frequency and intensity. In STCZ, there is a decrease in extreme precipitation until the 1990s, and from there, an increase, showing a wetter climate in the most recent years. It is also verified in SBGl that there is a statistically significant increase (decrease) in air temperature of +0.1°C/decade (-0.2°C/decade) and relative humidity of +1.2%/decade (-3%/decade) at the low and middle (high) troposphere. There is a visible rising trend in most of the evaluated instability indices over the last few decades. The increasing trends of some extreme precipitation indices are probably allied to the precipitable water increasing trend of +1.2 mm/decade.

Ecuador potato crop is family based production system. Potato production has two roles in their economy, the first is providing food for their families and the second is a source of income for the household. However small scale farmers have limited access to local markets and most of the sales are through intermediates’ who purchase directly in the field at the lowest price possible. Potato production challenges for the small-scale farmers are among others availability of quality potato seed, direct sales, purchase of agrochemical inputs to maintain their crops and lack of education. In 2021, only 4% of potato farmers used certified seed. Potato yield is still low around 16.1 t·ha-1, in the last 10 years the total potato cultivated area was reduced by at least 50%. The farmers produce “Bokashi” and other organic fertilizer and these are effective to improve soil fertility and plant health. Homemade bio-pesticides reduce agrochemical pesticides. The Decision Support System (DSS) is a handheld device to control late blight, minimizes fungicide applications and improve fungicide rotation. In 2018 Candidatus liberibacter solanacearum (lso), the causal agent of zebra chip, and its vector, the potato psyllid Bactericera cockerelli, together created havoc for farmers and researchers. Promotion of early potato varieties INIAP—libertad is an alternative to lower the impact of this newest pest.

哥斯达黎加公共基础设施方面建设的滞后降低了她在其所在区域和世界上与其他国家的竞争力。2014-2015年度的《全球竞争力报告》指出哥斯达黎加在全球144个国家中仅排名第119位。目前,该国把GDP的1.1%用于基础设施建设,然而实际所需的投资为3.7%。为了填补这个差额,政府已经开始应用特许经营模式来发展重大基础设施项目,但是应用不尽人意,在12年中采用这种模式的只有5个项目。此外,特许经营模式下的这些项目也受到了公众的强烈反对,导致Corredor San josé–San Ramón项目的中止。相关研究表明,风险分担与项目的成功之间存在直接的关系。因此,本论文旨在探索哥斯达黎加PPP项目的风险分担实际,并弄清其做法是否符合国际趋势。通过大量的文献阅读和一些非正式的访谈,了解了澳大利亚、中国大陆、印度、中国香港、印度尼西亚、希腊、南非、英国和新加坡等国的风险分担和实践。然后,调研风险了哥斯达黎加5个特许经营项目,即Terminal de Contenedores en Moín(TCM),Terminal Granelera en Puerto Caldera(TGPC),Aeropuerto Daniel Oduber Quirós(ADOQ),Ruta 27 San josé–Caldera,and Corredor San josé–San Ramón相关合同中的风险分担,然后进行了比较。本研究有利于国内外的管理者、官员、投资者和研究人员对基础设施PPP项目的风险分担有更好的了解。根据国际惯例所识别的风险是89个,而哥斯达黎加的风险是51个。研究结论表明,哥斯达黎加的风险分担符合国际惯例,实现了向私营部门转移风险的目的。但是,也有证据表明,政治、社会和关系等风险存在不合理的分担,实际上,这也就是风险识别的问题,这些风险并未出现在特许经营合同中。因此,在风险识别和管理方面急需重大改进。最后,政府管理这些项目的沟通策略、项目管理和领导力等方面也有不足,有待改进。论文还建议:政府应编制有利于实施和管理基础设施PPP项目的指南、改进现有运营或建设中项目的审计、改进政府的沟通策略、鼓励当地投资者和承包商参与PPP、鼓励学术机构进一步研究PPP。

Assessment of trace metals in droppings of Adélie penguins(Pygoscelis adeliae) from different locations of the Antarctic Peninsula area

In recent decades, polar regions of the planet have witnessed an increase in human presence. Antarctica is considered one of the most pristine regions of the world, but it could be affected by pollution owing to anthropogenic activities, particularly in the Antarctic Peninsula. Human presence can increase the levels of some trace metals in Antarctic environments, an issue that needs to be evaluated. To acquire data of trace metal contamination in the Antarctic Peninsula region, concentrations （dry weight） of Cd, Pb, As, Cu, Hg and Zn in fresh excrement of Ad61ie penguins were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. During the 2012/2013 austral summer, samples were collected from four important nesting sites on the Antarctic Peninsula： Arctowski Base, Kopaitic Island （both sites in the northern Antarctic Peninsula）, Yalour Island and Avian Island （both sites in the southern Antarctic Peninsula）. Data showed that Ad61ie penguin excreta had significantly higher levels （***~） of As, Cd, Hg, Pb and Cu at Arctowski Base and Kopaitic Island, both sites that have major anthropogenic activities that probably contributed to increased metal levels. The levels of trace metals in Ad61ie penguins were similar to those reported in excreta of Antarctic species in previous studies, and lower than those in excreta of other Antarctic animals. Data suggest that metals ingested by these penguin species that feed in the sea, end up in terrestrial ecosystems.

Bone Marrow Transplant long-Term Survivors’ Satisfaction with Quality of life: Comparison with a Control Group

Purpose: To evaluate the global quality of life (Qol) of survivors with 10-year or more post-transplant, and to identify risk factors that interfere with well-being. Methods: This is a prospective analytic transversal study with 214 survivors of Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) and 264 healthy people identified among blood donors, treated as the control group, of both sexes, 18 years or older. The protocol includes a demographic-socioeconomic questionnaire, World Health Organization Quality of life (WHOQOl) and the Karnofsky Performance Status Scale. Results: 53.7% of the survivor group members are satisfied with their Qol. A similar result can be found in the control group (54.2%). Chronological maturity, anxiety, sexual difficulty, and being a provider are factors that interfere negatively in the Qol of male survivors. In female survivors, the risk factors are anxiety, low educational level, not having a stable partner, being a provider, and not being Caucasian. Conclusions: Survivors are as satisfied with their Qol as the control group. Qol is understood as a perceptive process composed of objective (functional and relational capacity) and subjective phenomenon (perceptive composition).
