Elaboration and costs multi-nutritional blocs with goatee leaves (<i>Pithecellobium acatlense</i>) consumed by goats in the Mixteca Poblana, Mexico

The elaboration of multinutritional blocs (MB) is an alternative that allows supplement energy, protein, vitamins and minerals, and additionally, it can be administered and take natural resources as protein banks, mainly in the dry season, raising their cost and the concentrates decreasing profitability to producers. An aid is green or dried foliage of the tree-shrub of the Mixteca Poblana that drop their leaves to the ground (dry hay) in the dry season, thus becomes valuable forage consumed by goats, being great for your protein content and low cost in diets of small ruminants in silvopastoral production systems, at the dwindle the foliage of woody perennials in a time of the year. The aim of this study was to develop and meet production costs multinutrient blocks with goatee sheets (Pithecellobium acatlense) consumed by goats in the Mixteca Puebla. The study was done in the community of Tehuaxtla, belonging to the municipality Piaxtla in the Mixteca Poblana, which shows a secondary vegetation (arboreal, shrubby) that is consumed by goats in that region. 8 multinutritional blocks were used with Pithecellobium acatlense into two groups of 30 goats. Chemical analysis threw goatee 11.7% CP during the dry season and 14.8% CP for rains regarding consumption of BM group A showed 20% less compared to Group B, with respect to consumption of the block multinutrient the group A was 56 g/day/goat, whilst the group B has consumed 73 g/day/goat, where he converted ±0.14 g/goat/day for this preparation (MB), with a cost /goat when consuming block/8 days 0.14 USD.

Genome-Wide Survey and Evolutionary Analysis of Trypsin Proteases in Apicomplexan Parasites

Apicomplexa are an extremely diverse group of unicellular organisms that infect humans and other animals. Despite the great advances in combating infectious diseases over the past century, these parasites still have a tremendous social and economic burden on human societies, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Proteases from apicomplexa have been characterized at the molecular and cellular levels, and central roles have been proposed for proteases in diverse processes. In this work, 16 new genes encoding for trypsin proteases are identified in 8 apicomplexan genomes by a genome-wide survey. Phylogenetic analysis suggests that these genes were gained through both intracellutar gene transfer and vertical gene transfer. Identification, characterization and understanding of the evolutionary origin of protease-mediated processes are crucial to increase the knowledge and improve the strategies for the development of novel chemotherapeutic agents and vaccines.

Role of microRNAs in alcohol-induced liver disorders and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

MicroRNAs(miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs that regulate multiple physiological and pathological functions through the modulation of gene expression at the post-transcriptional level. Accumulating evidence has established a role for miRNAs in the development and pathogenesis of liver disease. Specifically, a large number of studies have assessed the role of miRNAsin alcoholic liver disease(ALD) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD), two diseases that share common underlying mechanisms and pathological characteristics. The purpose of the current review is to summarize and update the body of literature investigating the role of miRNAs in liver disease. In addition, the potential use of miRNAs as biomarkers and/or therapeutic targets is discussed. Among all miRNAs analyzed, miR-34 a, miR-122 and miR-155 are most involved in the pathogenesis of NAFLD. Of note, these three miRNAs have also been implicated in ALD, reinforcing a common disease mechanism between these two entities and the pleiotropic effects of specific miRNAs. Currently, no single miRNA or panel of miRNAs has been identified for the detection of, or staging of ALD or NAFLD. While promising results have been shown in murine models, no therapeutic based-miRNA agents have been developed for use in humans with liver disease.

Inventory and Geometrical Changes in Small Glaciers Covering Three Northern Patagonian Summits Using Remote Sensing and GIS Techniques

In the last few decades, a large quantity of research has been performed to elucidate the current behavior of glaciers in southern Chile, especially with respect to the volumetric changes in the outlets of the Northern and Southern Patagonian Icefields （NPI and SPI, respectively）. Calculations have shown a generalized thinning and withdrawal, which greatly contributes to the increase in sea level attributed to the ice melt from non-polar glaciers. However, these icefields are surrounded by many small icecaps, which have＇yet to be studied in detail. A precise estimation of the volume of ice located in these mountain chains could provide new information with respect to this area＇s exact contribution to the increase in sea level. Thus, this study presents an inventory of relatively small Northern Patagonian glaciers in the surrounding of the three summits： Mount Queulat, and the Maca and Hudson volcanoes. The study used remote sensing techniques in a GIS environment to determine the margins, surface areas, thickness changes and hypsometry for the glaciated zones. Landsat images from different dates were analyzed using standard band ratio and screen delineation techniques. Additionally, digital elevation models from different dates were compared using map algebra, calculating thickness changes. Based on the results, we propose that there are important volumetric changes in the glaciers studied, whichcould be explained by precipitation trends in a general context, and an influence of the glaciers＇ sizes in some local response. Therefore, we suggest the exact contribution of the Patagonia to the increase in sea level corresponds to a regional pattern rather than just the behavior of a single ice field.

Factors that influence outcome in non-invasive and invasive treatment in polycystic liver disease patients

AIM: To evaluate the factors that influence outcome of both non-invasive and invasive treatment of polycystic liver disease. METHODS: Analysis of clinical files of patients with complete follow-up from July 1986 to June 2006. RESULTS: Forty-one patients (male, 7; female, 34), 47.8 ± 11.9 years age, and 5.7 ± 6.7 years follow-up, were studied. Alkaline phosphatase (AP) elevation (15% of patients) was associated with the requirement of invasive treatment (IT, P = 0.005). IT rate was higher in symptomatic than non-symptomatic patients (65.4% vs 14.3%, P = 0.002), and in women taking hormonal replacement therapy (HRT) (P = 0.001). Cysts complications (CC) were more frequent (22%) in the symptomatic patients group (P = 0.023). Patients with body mass index (BMI) > 25 (59%) had a trend to complications after IT (P = 0.075). Abdominal pain was the most common symptom (56%) and indication for IT (78%). Nineteen patients (46%) required a first IT: 12 open fenestration (OF), 4 laparoscopic fenestration (LF) and 3 fenestration with hepatic resection (FHR). Three required a second IT, and one required a third procedure. Complications due to first IT were found in 32% (OF 16.7%, LF 25%, FHR 66.7%), and in thesecond IT in 66.7% (OF 100%). Follow-up mortality rate was 0. CONCLUSION: Presence of symptoms, elevated AP, and CC are associated with IT requirement. HRT is associated with presence of symptoms and IT requirement. Patients with BMI > 25 have a trend be susceptible to IT complications. The proportions of complications are higher in FHR and second IT groups. RS is more frequent after OF.

Here we investigated the effects of chronic treated with resveratrol, a polyphenol (3,4’,5-trihydroxystilbene) found in more than 70 plant species and food products such as red grapes, berries and peanuts, or N-PEP-12, a mix of peptides, on arteries in aging rats. Aging rats have shown endothelial dysfunction. Aged Sprague-Dawley rats (18 months old) were treated with resveratrol (20 mg/kg/day by gavage) or N-PEP-12 (60 mg/kg/day by gavage) for 10 weeks. 24 hours after the last administration of resveratrol or N-PEP-12, the animals were weighed and diastolic and systolic blood pressure was measured by tail-cuff plethysmography. Thoracic and abdominal aorta artery segments were obtained from resveratrol-, N-PEP-12-and vehicle-treated rats and were mounted in isometric tension for isolated vessels. We found that resveratrol and N-PEP-12 improved acetylcholine-induced relaxation in the old animals. These results suggest that chronic administration of resveratrol or N-PEP-12 may in part reduce endothelial dysfunction in the aging.

Mechanosynthesis as a Simple Method to Obtain a Magnetic Composite (Activated Carbon/Fe₃O₄) for Hyperthermia Treatment

A large number of magnetic nanomaterials have been studied for their hyperthermic potential, such as iron oxide based materials. These are embedded in different matrices to improve their properties. In this paper magnetite was synthesized by the coprecipitation method and an activated carbon/magnetite composite was obtained by mechanosynthesis (400 rpm, 3 h). The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), IR-FT spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Furthermore, composite heating curves as well as hemolysis tests were performed. The composite showed a superparamagnetic behavior due to its low coercivity index (8.92 Oe) and a high saturation magnetization (40.12 emu/g). SEM images showed that the magnetite was observed on the surface of activated carbon and also the IR-FT spectra indicated that oxygenated groups on the activated carbon surface were responsible for the anchoring of magnetite in the surface, with particle sizes between 9 and 14 nm. Heating results indicated that a composite mass of 18 mg reach a temperature of 45.6°C in a low frequency magnetic field (10.2 kA and 200 kHz). Hemolysis tests indicated that the composite is a non-hemolytic material (4.7% hemolysis). These results demonstrate that the material can be used in magnetic hyperthermia techniques for cancer treatment.

We report a molecular modeling paradigm to describe silica polymerization reactions in aqueous solutions at conditions that are representative of realistic experimental processes like biosilicification or porous silica synthesis–*** close to ambient temperatures and over a wide range of *** key point is to describe the Si-O-Si chemical bond formation and breakage processes through a continuous potential with a balance between attractive and repulsive interactions between suitably placed virtual sites and sticky *** simplicity of the model,its applicability in standard parallelized molecular dynamics codes,and its compatibility with the widely used MARTINI coarse-grained force-field allows for the study of systems containing millions of atoms over microsecond time *** model is calibrated to match experimental results for the temporal evolution of silica polymerization in aqueous solution close to the isoelectric point,and can describe silica polymerization and self-assembly processes during encapsulation of a surfactant micelle.

Efficiency of RAPD in assessing genetic variation in commercially viable local varieties of blueberry (<i>Vaccinium</i>)

The growth in both production and plantation surface area of blueberries in Chile has been positive, with an estimated surface area of 13,057 hectares (16.9% planting surface) and production in the order of 56,000 tons (16.3% mundial production). Of all the different species of blueberry there are several varieties that have advantages with regard to certain conditions;for example, one variety adapts better to the climate of a particular area, while others are better for early or late harvests, they can also be resistant to fungus, bacteria, etc. Companies are very interested in this issue because prior knowledge of such data can bring financial benefits. Blueberries have a significant degree of morphological variation, which enables recognition of different clones with different environmental adaptation characteristics, but it also allows us to discriminate between different levels of fruit quality, which is of commercial interest. However, these morphological characteristics are late in their expression, making it impossible to recognize the clones in the early stage of their development. A more efficient tool to be able to recognize different clones is the use of molecular markers. Of the techniques based the RAPD (randomly amplified polymorphic DNA). They have the advantage that the method has no need for prior knowledge of the DNA sequence. It is of great interest to the private sector to have prior access to information on the types of clone they possess, in order to then be able to differentiate the varieties, but for this it is necessary to obtain a quick and economical technique. In this study, through the use of RAPD-PCR, it is possible to differentiate between different varieties of Vaccinium grown in Chile in order to then optimize blueberry production in terms of time and resources.
