This study investigates the biofilm formation, presence and distribution of virulence genes and the capacity to induce an inflammatory response in strains of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from milk samples in Bahia, Brazil. A total of 132 samples of raw milk were collected from four dairy farms (designated A to D) located in southwestern Bahia, in the municipality of Vitória da Conquista, from October/2009 to September/2010. After processing of the samples, 94 (71.2%) S. aureus isolates were obtained. These strains were subjected to the antibiogram method mIC (minimum Inhibitory Concentration). As for the pathogenicity, tests were performedin vitrobiofilm formation induced by glucose. moreover, we performed PCR for their virulence genes: sea (enterotoxin A), seb (B), sec (C), pvl (Panton-Valentine Leukocidin), clfA (Clumping Factor A) and spa (protein A) and analysis of cytokine induction in the inflammatory response of J774 macrophages by exocellular lipoteichoic acid. No isolates were resistant to oxacillin and vancomycin. In biofilm production, 5.31% (5/94) isolates did not produce biofilm, 5.31% (5/94) of the samples were poor producers, 15.96% (15/94) strains were moderate producers, 18.09% (17/94) were producers and 55.32% (55/94) of isolates were strong biofilm producers. One (1.06%) isolate expressed the seb gene, one (1.06%) sec, 18 (19.2%) cflA and 44 (46.8%) had spa. There was no expression of sea and pvl between isolates analyzed. The analysis of cytokine induction in the inflammatory response did not show statistical difference in the levels of IL-6, TNF-α and IL-10 induction. However, there was statistical difference in IL-1 induction between isolates from different farms. AIm To characterize the prescribing patterns for hydrocortisone for patients with septic shock and perform an exploratory analysis in order to identify the variables associated with better *** This prospective cohort study included 59 patients with septic shock who received stress-dose *** was performed at 2 critical care units in academic hospitals from June 1st, 2015, to July 31 st, 2016. Demographic data, comorbidities, medical management details, adverse effects related to corticosteroids, and outcomes were collected after the critical care physician indicated initiation of hydrocortisone. Univariate comparison between continuous and bolus administration of hydrocortisone was performed, including multivariate analysis, as well as Kaplan-meier analysis to compare the proportion of shock reversal at 7 d after presentation. Receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curves determined the best cut-off criteria for initiation of hydrocortisone associated with the highest probability of shock reversal. We addressed the effects of the taper strategy for discontinuation of hydrocortisone, noting risk of shock relapse and adverse *** All-cause 30-d mortality was 42%. Hydrocortisone was administered as a continuous infusion in 54.2% of patients; time to reversal of shock was 49 h longer in patients who were given a bolus administration [59 h(range, 47.5-90.5) vs 108 h(range, 63.2-189); P = 0.001]. The maximal dose of norepinephrine after initiation of hydrocortisone was lower in patients on continuous infusion [0.19 μg/kg per minute(range, 0.11-0.28 μg)] compared with patients who were given bolus [0.34 μg/kg per minute(range, 0.16-0.49); P = 0.004]. Kaplan-meier analysis revealed a higher proportion of shock reversal at 7 d in patients with continuous infusion compared to those given bolus(83% vs 63%; P = 0.004). There was a good correlation between time to initiation of hydrocortisone and time to reversal of shock(r = 0.80; P < 0.0001)

The air quality in many cities has been deteriorating and affecting population’s health. Airborne particles can block the defense mechanisms of respiratory system and may lead biological elements such as pollen, bacteria, fungi and viruses into the lungs. This paper presents the study of biologically contaminated air in the city of Hermosillo, analyzing filters containing particulate matter with a diameter equal or less than 10 micrometers (Pm10) and Total Suspended Particles (TSP). Three sampling periods were analyzed during 2011. Samples taken from the filters were placed in tubes containing nutritive broth BHI (Brain Heart Infusion) and incubated at 37 °C for 24 hours. The identification of the isolated microorganisms was done by a biochemical test recommended in Bergey’s manual. Results showed a high bacteria concentration in the presence of microorganisms such as Klebsiella pneumoniae sub pneumoniae, Citrobacter, Enterococcus faecalis, Proteus penneri, Butiauxellaagrestis, Salmonella paratyphi A and Enterobacter sacazakii. When bacterial concentration was analyzed separately, the lowest number of bacteria was observed during February for the south location and in August for the north location. The highest degree of bacterial air pollution was found in the central area of the city.

We report on electrodes fabricated with EDOT-Pyrrole copolymer through electrophoretic deposition and used for recording and sensing bio-electrical signals. We measured the electrical properties of the copolymer deposited on a stainless-steel substrate, and we performed Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) and Scanning Electron microscopy (SEm) studies to characterize the morphological properties and copolymer distribution on the metal surface. We found that electrodes fabricated with EDOT-Pyrrole copolymer exhibit a high signal-to-noise ratio as well as an accurate and stable conductivity compared with other commonly used electroconductive polymers. Stainless-steel-coated EDOT-Pyrrole electrodes are suitable to record electrocardiograms in humans with high resolution comparable to standard silver-electrodes.

The objective of the present investigation was to evaluate the Urochloa Insurgent, Piata and Signal grasses by varying the phenology in the attributes: stem population dynamics, tissue replacement, leaf:stem relation and weight per stem. The data were analyzed using a completely randomized block design with arrangement in divided plots and four replications, the procedure used was PROC GLM from SAS. The Signal grass presented higher stem density with an average of 450 m?2 stems, while the meadow with Insurgent grass registered the lowest stem density throughout the investigation, with an average of 320 m-2 stems;furthermore, in this treatment, the stem density tended to increase slowly over time (P = 0.05). The Insurgente and signal grasses showed rapid leaf elongation from day 21 of regrowth with 123 and 104 cm stem?1, while in Piata the accelerated leaf elongation was on day 14 with 113 cm stem?1 where it remained active its growth until day 56 (P > 0.05). As the regrowth age was increasing, the population dynamics of stems and weight per stem were increasing;in Insurgent and signal the leaf elongation and net growth increased to a maximum point to start declining;however, in Piata grass was increasing without decreasing. The trend of the leaf:stem relation was decreasing as the test progressed and senescence increased from day 21 of regrowth.

Pain is defined as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience, associated with actual or potential tissue damage. According to its neurobiological mechanism, pain is classified into nociceptive, inflammatory, dysfunctional, and neuropathic. Neuropathic pain (NP) is caused by a lesion or disease of the somatosensory nervous system. Both pregabalin and gabapentin are pharmaceuticals used as validation drugs in experimental models of NP. Pregabalin was shown to produce significant antihyperalgesic and antiallodynic effects. Gabapentin is used as a reference compound for new analgesics and reduces tactile allodynia in rats. The aim of this work is to evaluate pregabalin and gabapentin effects on nociceptive behaviors induced by spinal nerve ligation (SNL). Female Wistar rats of 140 - 160 g were used, divided into five groups: Naive, SHAm, SNL rats treated with saline solution, SNL rats treated with pregabalin 30 mg/kg p.o., SNL rats treated with gabapentin 300 mg/kg p.o. Nociceptive behaviors were determined by the up and down method. In the establishment of SNL-induced allodynic behavior, a reduction in paw withdrawal threshold was observed in the time course, which was present from day 1 and it was maintained for 28 days post-ligation. With the administration of pregabalin and gabapentin, anti-allodynic behavior was observed in the time course and in the areas under the curve (AUC) of the time course of anti-allodynic behavior, significant difference was observed between pregabalin, and gabapentin groups compared to vehicle with a value of p < 0.0001. The results showed pregabalin and gabapentin induce an antinociceptive effect in rats subjected to SNL.
