Corneal transplantation outcomes after the extrusion of an intrastromal keratoprosthesis:a pilot study

This short report includes 5 eyes of 5 patients(mean age 63.2±12 years)who underwent a tectonic keratoplasty[deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty(DAlK)or penetrating keratoplasty(PK)]in order to rehabilitate the eye after the extrusion of the non-perforating keratoprosthesis(Kpro)KeraKlear(KeraMed,USA).The non-perforating Kpro was extruded after a mean period of 21.4±21.8 months due to *** two cases,the keratoplasty was performed the same day of the non-perforating Kpro removal due to a severe melting,while in the other three cases it was performed one to 3 months *** eyes received a DAlK,but in 3 eyes a macroscopic Descemet membrane perforation forced the conversion into a *** mean follow-up period after the keratoplasty was 16.8±6.6 *** cases of rejection were *** the 5 eyes achieved“anatomical success”(transparent graft,with no signs of infection or inflammation).Two eyes showed limited“functional success”because the achievement of the best visual potential was prevented by the development of glaucomatous optic atrophy during the follow-up *** conclusion,this short report presents an unexpected success of a keratoplasty performed with a tectonic purpose after the extrusion of the non-perforating Kpro because the corneal graft remained transparent,without neovascularization or scarring during the follow-up *** initial evidence shows some encouraging results regarding graft survival rate and the achievement of a useful visual rehabilitation with keratoplasty after a nonperforating Kpro failure instead of repeating the Kpro implantation.

Keratoconus is a corneal degeneration that usually appears during puberty and may seriously deteriorate the quality of life of the *** corneal disease is today the first indication of corneal transplantation in young *** the last decade of the XX century,keratoplasty procedures were the only alternative to treat this pathological *** the beginning of the XXI century,intracorneal ring segments implantation was proposed as a therapeutic choice for treating keratoconus *** then,several published articles have reported the benefits of this surgical procedure in treating this type of corneal ectatic *** purpose of the present investigative work is to summarize the characteristic of the intracorneal ring segments and also to review the different features published in the literature in relation to this surgical technique for the treatment of keratoconus patients.

The number of people with food allergy(FA)has increased in recent decades,as has the number of foods to which they are *** of FA prevalence vary widely,likely because of different definitions,evaluated foods and geo-graphic *** developed countries,overall preva-lence estimates range from 1.9%to 7.2%[1,2].In latin America,the prevalence of FA in children is between 1.4%and 5.3%[3-6],with important age-based variations(from 1.9%in infants to 0.4%in preschoolers)[7].FA is a complex trait in which the interplay of genetic and environmental fac-tors results in disease ***-known factors that increase atopic susceptibility include sex[8,9],age[10],and socioeconomic status[11-13].Furthermore,the asso-ciation between family history of allergies and childhood FA has been consistently reported in recent ***,a maternal history of allergic disease appears to be more strongly associated with FA than paternal history of atopy[14].

Through the non separable solution of the eigenvalue problem associated to the problem of a charged particle in a flat box and a constant transversal magnetic field, with landau and symmetric gauges, it is found that the landau’s levels are numerably degenerated in both cases. A mathematical proposition is proven to carry out this statement.

Waste frying oil （WFO） is a very important feedstock for obtaining biodiesel at low cost and using WFO in transesterification reactions to produce biodiesel helps eliminate local environmental problems. In this study biodiesel was produced from WFO in sub- and super- critical methanol on a zeolite Y solid acid catalyst. The procedure was optimized using a design of experiments by varying the methanol to WFO molar ratio, the reaction temperature, and the amount of catalyst. Typical biodiesel yields varied from 83 to nearly 100% with methyl esters content ranging from 1.41-1.66mol.l-~ and typical dynamic viscosities of 22.1-8.2 cE Gas chromatography was used to determine the molecular composition of the biodiesel. The reaction products contained over 82 wt-% methyl esters, 4.2 wt-% free acids, 13.5 wt-% monoglycer- ides, and 0.3 wt-% diglycerides. The transesterification of WFO with methanol around its critical temperature combined with a zeolite Y as an acid catalyst is an efficient approach for the production of biodiesel with acceptable yields.

The endosomal Toll-like receptors （TlRs） TlR3, TlR7, TlR8 and TlR9 are important in sensing foreign nucleic acids encountered by phagocytes. Because TlR8 was initially thought to be non-functional in mice, less is known about TlR8 than the genetically and functionally related TlR7. Originally associated with the recognition of single-stranded RNA of viral origin, there is now evidence that human TlR8 is also able to sense bacterial RNA released within phagosomal vacuoles, inducing the production of both nuclear factor （NF）-κB-dependent cytokines and type I interferons （IFNs）, such as IFN-β. The functions of TlR8 extend beyond the recognition of foreign pathogens and include cross-talk with other endosomal TlRs, a process that may also have a role in the generation of autoimmunity.

Background:To analyze the clinical results of an artificial neural network(ANN)that has been processed in order to improve the predictability of intracorneal ring segments(ICRS)implantation in ***:This retrospective,comparative,nonrandomized,pilot,clinical study included a cohort of 20 keratoconic eyes implanted with intracorneal ring segments KeraRing(Mediphacos,Belo Horizonte,Brazil)using the ANN(ANN group)and 20 keratoconic eyes implanted with KeraRing using the manufacturer’s nomograms(nomogram group).Uncorrected distance visual acuity(UDVA),corrected distance visual acuity(CDVA)(visual acuity is expressed in decimal value and in logMAR value in brackets),manifest refraction,corneal topography,tomography,aberrometry,pachymetry and volume analysis(Sirius ***,Firenze,Italy)were performed during the preoperative visit;and the two groups,ANN group and nomogram group,did not differ significantly preoperatively in all of the parameters *** preoperative values were compared with the results obtained at the third-month ***-Whitney test and Wilcoxon test were used for the statistical ***:The spherical equivalent and the keratometric values decreased significantly in both *** CDVA improved from 0.60±0.23(0.22 logMAR)pre-operatively to 0.73±0.21(0.14 logMAR)post-operatively in the ANN group(plogMAR)pre-operatively to 0.62±0.19(0.21 logMAR)post-operatively in the nomogram group(plly significant difference between the two groups(plike aberrations decreased significantly in the ANN group,while in the nomogram group they did not change significantly,but no statistically significant difference was found between the two ***:ANN to guide ICRS provides an increase in the visual acuity,reduction in the spherical equivalent and improvement in the optical quality of keratoconus *** gives better results wh
