Ultra-dense planar metallic nanowire arrays with extremely large anisotropic optical and magnetic properties

A nanofabrication method for the production of ultra-dense planar metallic nanowire arrays scalable to wafer-size is presented. The method is based on an efficient template deposition process to grow diverse metallic nanowire arrays with extreme regularity in only two steps. First, Ⅲ-Ⅴ semiconductor substrates are irradiated by a low-energy ion beam at an elevated temperature, forming a highly ordered nanogroove pattern by a ＂reverse epitaxy＂ process due to self-assembly of surface vacancies. Second, diverse metallic nanowire arrays （Au, Fe, Ni, Co, FeAl alloy） are fabricated on these Ⅲ-Ⅴ templates by deposition at a glancing incidence angle. This method allows for the fabrication of metallic nanowire arrays with periodicities down to 45 nm scaled up to wafer-size fabrication. As typical noble and magnetic metals, the Au and Fe nanowire arrays produced here exhibited large anisotropic optical and magnetic properties, respectively. The excitation of localized surface plasmon resonances （LSPRs） of the Au nanowire arrays resulted in a high electric field enhancement, which was used to detect phthalocyanine （CoPc） in surface-enhanced Raman scattering （SERS）. Furthermore, the Fe nanowire arrays showed a very high in-plane magnetic anisotropy of approximately 412 mT, which may be the largest in-plane magnetic anisotropy field yet reported that is solely induced via shape anisotropy within the plane of a thin film.

To the Editor： With great interest we read the original article of Chert et al published in the Chinese Medical Journal comparing serum concentrations of cytokines in patients of Han and Li ethnicity with posttraumatic stress disorder （PTSd）. The authors found significantly higher serum concentrations of the cytokines interleukin （IL）-2, IL-6, IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor （TNF）-α in PTSd patients compared to normal controls, and differences in cytokine concentrations according to ethnicity.

Background: Neuroscience can assist clinical understanding and therapy by finding neurobiological markers for mental illness symptoms. Objectives: To quantify biomarkers for schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder and relate these to discrete symptoms of psychosis. Methods: Within a case-control design with multiple exclusion criteria to exclude organic causes and confounding variables, 67 dSM IV-R diagnosed and 67 control participants from a defined hospital, clinic and community catchment area were investigated for candidate markers. Participants underwent protocol-based diagnostic-checking and symptom rating via Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale and Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, functional-rating scales, biological sample-collection and sensory-processing assessment. Blood and urine samples were analysed for monoamine neurotransmitters, their metabolites, vitamin cofactors and intermediate-substances related to oxidative stress and metabolism of monoamines. Neurocognitive assessment of visual and auditory processing was conducted at both peripheral and central levels. Biomarkers were defined by Receiver Operating Curve (ROC) analysis. Spearman’s analysis explored correlations between discrete symptoms and the biomarkers. Results: Receiver Operating Curve (ROC) analysis identified twenty-one biomarkers: elevated urinary dopamine, noradrenaline, adrenaline and hydroxy pyrroline-2-one as a marker of oxidative stress. Other biomarkers were deficits in vitamins d, B6 and folate, elevation of serum B12 and free serum copper to zinc ratio, along with deficits in dichotic listening, distance vision, visual and auditory speed of processing, visual and auditory working memory and six middle ear acoustic reflex parameters. discrete symptoms such as delusions, hostility, suicidality and auditory hallucinations were biomarker-defined and symptom biomarker correlations assumed an understandable pattern in terms of the catecholamines and their relationship to biochemist

The present study demonstrates the comparison of erosion rate of critical pipeline parts, namely elbow and T-junction which face the maximum erosion in a pipeline and may cause an early damage and failure of the system. CFd （computational fluid dynamics） with an Eulerian-Lagrangian approach coupled with an approved erosion model is applied to visualize the 3-d flow behavior of slurry flow in both parts and to predict the erosion rate and the location of erosion at the internal surfaces. The analysis of slurry erosion is performed in five steps; geometry and grid generation, grid study/refinement, fluid flow solution, solid particles tracking and finally, the erosion calculation. In previous publications in literature considering transportation of gas-solid flows in pipe parts, the application ofT-junctions instead of elbows for specified conditions in order to reduce the erosion is recommended. In this article, it is approved that for liquid-solid flows, the Stokes number is reasonably smaller than the values for gas-solid flows. This causes the solid particles tightly couple to the fluid phase and to travel more closely with the fluid streamlines. The effects of important influencing parameters such as feed flow velocity, solid concentration, particle size and shape are investigated in detail in current work. It was found that for liquid-solid flows, the erosion of T-junction for all of the mentioned influencing parameters, due to its geometrical specifications and Stokes number variation in comparison with gas-solid flows, is reasonably higher than erosion of elbow. due to these findings, in contrary to the gas-solid mixture flows, application of T-junction instead of elbow for liquid-solid flow transportation is not recommended.

Computer Science Tools for Manual Editing of Computed Tomographic Images: Impact on the Quality of 3d Printed Models

Background: Three-dimensional printing (3dP) technologies are a trendsetting topic, also in the field of surgery. Preoperative planning for maxillofacial and neurological surgery, for instance, increasingly involves skull models obtained by 3dP. However, the cranial replicas currently used in this context have been shown to not reproduce the exact anatomy of the individual patient undergoing surgery. Objective: The present study aimed at investigating the extent to which manual editing, using current computer software tools, can improve skull models derived from medical images. Methods: Skull computed tomography (CT) was obtained on three cadavers and?sent to three institutions that provide preoperative 3dP services. Each institute independently?performed 3d reconstructions, including routine manual editing, and subsequently produced the replicas. The models were then qualitatively compared with the respective original skull. For?quantitative comparison surface scans of particular regions of interest were made and the deviations assessed using 3-matic software (Materialise, Leuven, Belgium). Results: Routine manual editing of CT images resulted in replicas that were clear improvements over automatically generated reconstructions. This was particularly the case for teeth artefacts and thin-walled entities (e.g. paranasal sinuses). Conversely, however, many anatomical structures remained incorrectly rendered (e.g. orbitae, pterygoid processes, and sella turcica). Extraosseous calcifications had regularly not been removed. After extensive manual editing, however, replicas were able to provide largely submillimeter accuracy (mean deviation 0.2496 mm;standard deviation ±0.2276 mm). Conclusions: This study confirms that manual editing with current computer science tools does improve the quality of CT-based 3d printed skull models. But, it also demonstrates that a number of structures remain largely incorrectly rendered when edited in the presently used surgical framework.

Bacteria capable of denitrification play a significant role in the nitrogen cycle of freshwater ecosystems. By metabolizing nitrogen compounds they e.g. counteract the eutrophication of natural waters. To get detailed insights into the in situ turnover rates of nitrogen a reliable tool of quantification for active microorganisms is essential. In the present investigation, quantification capabilities of a molecular tool (Polymerase Chain Reaction—PCR) and a cultivation based tool (Most probable number—MPN) were investigated and compared. The total bacterial concentration yielded by the molecular PCR approach was up to 6-fold higher compared to the results of the MPN approach. However, the portion of culturable denitrifying bacteria compared to the number of specific gene copies (nirS) was much lower. depending on the environmental conditions, the difference between the PCR and the MPN approach was up to three orders of magnitude. From lab scale experiments with a pure P. aeroginosa strain it can be concludes, that these differences are not the result of inappropriate culture conditions but rather reflect the portion of so called viable but not culturable bacteria (VBNC). Low nitrate concentrations as found in many fresh water ecosystems induced a significant increase in the portion of non culturable denitrifying bacteria. Referred to the investigation of dynamic populations, the number of metabolic active bacteria is represented by the MPN rather than by the PCR approach.
