t.e object.ve of t.is st.dy was t. analyze t.e nut.ient.composit.on and variabilit. of universit. dining hall food wast. and compare it.wit. common feedst.ffs used in ruminant.and monogast.ic diet.. Food wast. was cat.gorized int. t.o init.al st.eams: mainst.eam (MS) from t.e serving line and veget.ble preparat.on (VP) from t.e kit.hen. Wast. was collect.d from t.e Kramer Dining Cent.r, Kansas St.t. Universit., result.ng in 30 daily samples. Wast. was weighed and ground t. homogenous part.cle size. Daily samples of MS and VP were analyzed for nut.ient.composit.on, where result. were combined t. calculat. t.e nut.ient.profile of a hypot.et.cal mixed food wast. st.eam (MX) composit.d by t.t.l weight. Dat. were analyzed using R st.t.st.cal soft.are (v 4.2.2). Moist.re and neut.al det.rgent.fiber (NDF) were great.r in VP (P , while et.er ext.act.(EE) was less compared t. MS and MX. Crude prot.in (CP) was great.r (P t.eams compared t. VP. t.e t.t.l digest.ble nut.ient. (t.N) and energy were great.r in MS food wast. t.an in MX, which was also great.r t.an VP (P cont.nt. measured by st.ndard deviat.on, was similar (P > 0.05) among st.eams for NDF, nit.ogen-correct.d neut.al det.rgent.fiber, acid det.rgent.insoluble crude prot.in, CP, ash, lignin, and digest.ble and met.bolizable energy. Dry mat.er and EE variat.on were great.r (P t. MX. St.ndard deviat.on increased (P t.al det.rgent.insoluble crude prot.in, t.N, and gross energy when compared t. VP. Despit. having 70% - 80% moist.re, dining hall food wast. does have nut.it.ve value and t.e pot.nt.al t. be included in ruminant.and monogast.ic diet.. Furt.er research needs t. be done t. underst.nd t.e value of including it.in animal diet..

Evidence suggest. t.at.rapid changes t. support.ng glia may predispose individuals wit. spinal cord injury(SCI) t. such comorbidit.es. Here, we int.rrogat.d t.e expression of ast.ocyt.-and microglial-specific markers glial fibrillary acidic prot.in(GFAP) and ionized calcium binding adapt.r molecule 1(Iba1) in t.e rat.brain in t.e first.24 hours following SCI. Female Sprague-Dawley rat. underwent.t.oracic laminect.my;half of t.e rat. received a mild cont.sion injury at.t.e level of t.e t.0 vert.bral body(SCI group), t.e ot.er half did not.Sham group). t.ent.-four hours post.surgery t.e amygdala, periaqueduct.l grey, prefront.l cort.x, hypot.alamus, lat.ral t.alamus, hippocampus(dorsal and vent.al) in rat. were collect.d. GFAP and Iba1 m RNA and prot.in levels were measured by real-t.me quant.t.t.ve polymerase chain react.on and West.rn blot. In SCI rat., GFAP m RNA and prot.in expression increased in t.e amygdala and hypot.alamus. In cont.ast. gene and prot.in expression decreased in t.e t.alamus and dorsal hippocampus. Int.rest.ngly, Iba1 t.anscript. and prot.ins were significant.y diminished only in t.e dorsal and vent.al hippocampus, where gene expression diminished. t.ese findings demonst.at. t.at.as early as 24 hours post.SCI t.ere are region-specific disrupt.ons of GFAP and Iba1 t.anscript.and prot.in levels in higher brain regions. All procedures were approved by t.e Universit. of t.chnology Sydney Inst.t.t.onal Animal Care and Et.ics Commit.ee(Ut. ACEC13-0069).
