Heterosis in locally adapted sorghum genotypes and potential of hybrids for increased productivity in contrasting environments in Ethiopia

Increased productivity in sorghum has been achieved in the developed world using *** their yield advantage,introduced hybrids have not been adopted in Ethiopia due to the lack of adaptive traits,their short plant stature and small grain *** study was conducted to investigate hybrid performance and the magnitude of heterosis of locally adapted genotypes in addition to introduced hybrids in three contrasting environments in *** total,139 hybrids,derived from introduced seed parents crossed with locally adapted genotypes and introduced R lines,were ***,the hybrids matured earlier than the adapted parents,but had higher grain yield,plant height,grain number and grain weight in all *** lowland adapted hybrids displayed a mean better parent heterosis(BPH) of19%,equating to 1160 kg ha-1and a 29% mean increase in grain yield,in addition to increased plant height and grain weight,in comparison to the hybrids derived from the introduced R *** mean BPH for grain yield for the highland adapted hybrids was 16% in the highland and 52%in the intermediate environment equating to 698 kg ha-1and 2031 kg ha-1,respectively,in addition to increased grain *** magnitude of heterosis observed for each hybrid group was related to the genetic distance between the parental *** majority of hybrids also showed superiority over the standard check *** general,hybrids from locally adapted genotypes were superior in grain yield,plant height and grain weight compared to the high parents and introduced hybrids indicating the potential for hybrids to increase productivity while addressing farmers' required traits.

A simple dual analyte fluorescein-based probe(PF3-Glc)was synthesised containingβ-glucosidase(β-glc)and hydrogen peroxide(H2O2)trigger *** presence ofβ-glc,resulted in fragmentation of the parent molecule releasing glucose and the slightly fluorescent mono-boronate fluorescein(PF3).Subsequently,in the presence of glucose oxidase(GOx),the released glucose was catalytically converted to d-glucono-δ-lactone,which produced H2O2 as a *** GOx-produced H2O2,resulted in classic H2O2-mediated boronate oxidation and the release of the highly emissive fluorophore,*** unique cascade reaction lead to an 80-fold increase in fluorescence intensity.

Syncope is a concerning symptom that affects a large proportion of *** can be related to a heterogeneous group of pathologies ranging from trivial causes to diseases with a high risk of sudden ***,benign causes are the most frequent,and identifying high-risk patients with potentially severe etiologies is crucial to establish an accurate diagnosis,initiate effective therapy,and alter the *** term cardiac syncope refers to those episodes where the cause of the cerebral hypoperfusion is directly related to a cardiac disorder,while arrhythmic syncope is cardiac syncope specifically due to rhythm ***,arrhythmias are the most common cause of cardiac *** bradyarrhythmia and tachyarrhythmia can cause a sudden decrease in cardiac output and produce *** this review,we summarized the main guidelines in the management of patients with syncope of presumed arrhythmic ***,we presented a thorough approach to syncope work-up through different tests depending on the clinical characteristics of the patients,risk stratification,and the management of syncope in different scenarios such as structural heart disease and channelopathies.

Background Coronary computed tomography angiography(CCTA)is often avoided in elderly patients due to a presumption that a high proportion of patients will have heavily calcified plaque limiting an accurate *** sought to assess the image quality,luminal stenosis and utility of CCTA in elderly patients with suspected coronary artery disease(CAd)and stable chest *** Retrospective analysis of elderly patients(>75 years)who underwent 320-detector row CCTA between 2012–2017 at *** CCTA was analysed for degree maximal coronary stenosis by CAd-RAdS classification,image quality by a 5-point Likert score(1-poor,2-adequate,3-good,4-very good,5-excellent)and presence of artefact limiting *** 1011 elderly patients(62%females,78.8±3.3 years)were *** risk factor prevalence included:hypertension(65%),hyperlipidaemia(48%),diabetes(19%)and smoking(21%).The CCTA was evaluable in 68%of patients which included 52%with non-obstructive CAd(d(>50%)*** Likert score was 3.1±0.6 corresponding to good image *** the 323(32%)of patients with a non-interpretable CCTA,80%were due to calcified plaque and 20%due to motion *** gender(P=0.009),age(P=0.02),excess motion(Pd diabetes mellitus(P=0.03)were associated with non-interpretable *** Although CCTA is a feasible non-invasive tool for assessment of elderly patients with stable chest pain,clinicians should still be cautious about referring elderly patients for *** who are male,diabetic and>78 years of age are significantly less likely to have interpretable scans.

BACKGROUNd Although surgical resection is associated with the best long-term outcomes for neuroendocrine liver metastases(NELM),the current indications for and outcomes of surgery for NELM from a population perspective are not well *** To determine the current indications for and outcomes of liver resection(LR)for NELM using a population-based *** A retrospective review of the 2014-2017 American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program and targeted hepatectomy databases was performed to identify patients who underwent LR for *** characteristics and 30-d morbidity and mortality were *** Among 669 patients who underwent LR for NELM,the median age was 60(interquartile range:51-67)and 51%were *** the number of metastases resected ranged from 1 to 9,the most common(45%)number of tumors resected was *** majority(68%)of patients had a largest tumor size ofderwent partial hepatectomy(71%)while fewer underwent a right or left hepatectomy or *** majority of operations were open(82%)versus laparoscopic(17%)or robotic(1%).In addition,30%of patients underwent intraoperative ablation while 45%had another concomitant operation including cholecystectomy(28.8%),bowel resection(20.2%),or partial pancreatectomy(3.4%).Overall 30-d morbidity and mortality was 29%and 1.3%,*** multivariate analysis,American Society of Anesthesiologists class≥3[odds ratios(OR),OR=2.089,95%confidence intervals(CI):1.197-3.645],open approach(OR=1.867,95%CI:1.148-3.036),right hepatectomy(OR=1.618,95%CI:1.014-2.582),and prolonged operative time of>230 min(OR=1.731,95%CI:1.168-2.565)were associated with higher 30-d morbidity while intraoperative ablation and concomitant procedures were *** LR for NELM was performed with relatively low postoperative morbidity and *** procedures performed at the time of LR did not increase morbidity.
