Inhibitory Mechanisms of Water Extract of Oplopanax elatus on Lipopolysaccharide-lnduced Inflammatory Responses in RAW 264.7 Murine Macrophage Cells

Objective:To study the anti-inflammatory action and cellular mechanism of Oplopanax ***:A hot water extract of OE(WOE)was prepared and a major constituent,syringin,was successfully *** content in WOE was found to be 214.0 p.g/g dried plant(w/w).Their anti-inflammatory activities were examined using RAW 264.7 macrophages and a mouse model of croton oil-induced ear ***:In lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-treated RAW 264.7 cells,a mouse macrophage cell line,WOE was found to significantly and strongly inhibit cyclooxygenase-2(COX-2)-induced prostaglandin E2(PGE2)production[half maximal inhibitory concentration(IC50)=135.2μg/mL]and inducible nitric oxide synthase(iNOS)-induced NO production(IC50=242.9μg/mL).In the same condition,WOE was revealed to inhibit NO production by downregulating iNOS expression,mainly by interrupting mitogen activated protein kinases(MAPKs)/activator protein-1(AP-1)*** activation of all three major MAPKs,p38 MAPK,extracellular signal-regulated kinase(ERK),and c-Jun N-terminal kinase,was inhibited by WOE(50-300μg/mL).On the other hand,WOE reduced PGE2 production by inhibiting COX-2 enzyme activity,but did not affect COX-2 expression *** addition,WOE inhibited the production of proinflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α.In croton oil-induced ear edema in mice,oral administration of WOE(50-300 mg/kg)dose-dependently inhibited edematic ***:Water extract of OE exhibited multiple anti-inflammatory action mechanisms and may have potential for treating inflammatory disorders.

Liver intravoxel incoherent motion diffusion-weighted imaging for the assessment of hepatic steatosis and fibrosis in children

AIM To evaluate the correlation between intravoxel incoherent motion(IVIM) diffusion-weighted imaging(DWI) parameters and the degree of hepatic steatosis and fibrosis in *** This retrospective study was approved by the institutional review board. The children(≤ 18 years) who underwent liver IVIM DWI with 8 b-values under the suspicion of hepatic steatosis or fibrosis from February 2013 to November 2016 were included. Subjects were divided into normal, fatty liver(FAT), and fibrotic liver(FIB) groups. The slow diffusion coefficient(D), fast diffusion coefficient(D*), perfusion fraction(f), and apparent diffusion coefficient(ADC) were measured. MR proton density fat fraction(PDFF), MR elastography(MRE), and IVIM values were *** A total of 123 children(median age of 12 years old, range: 6-18 years) were included, with 8 in the normal group, 93 in the FAT group, and 22 in the FIB group. The D* values were lower in the FIB group compared with those of the normal(P = 0.015) and FAT(P = 0.003) groups. The f values were lower in the FIB group compared with the FAT group(P = 0.001). In multivariate analyses, PDFF value was positively correlated with f value(β = 3.194, P < 0.001), and MRE value was negatively correlated with D* value(β =-7.031, P = 0.032). The D and ADC values were not influenced by PDFF or MRE *** In liver IVIM DWI with multiple b-values in children, there was a positive correlation between hepatic fat and blood volume, and a negative correlation between hepatic stiffness and endovascular blood flow velocity, while diffusion-related parameters were not affected.

Ecological evaluation of marine macroalgal communities on five islands of Korea in the Yellow Sea

Macroalgae have long been used as biological indicators of marine ecosystem health worldwide due to their ecological importance and sensitivity to environmental stress.A number of previous studies have utilized macroalgal communities in monitoring surveys of environmental *** study examined the characteristics and patterns of marine macroalgal communities in the Yellow Sea off the western coast of *** were analyzed for the number of species,biomass,and coverage ratio by macroalgal *** the study period,82 macroalgal species(10 green algae,17 brown algae,and 55 red algae)were identified at the five study sites,with the highest number of species found at Gwanrido and Uido(both containing 41 species)and the lowest at Daeijakdo(27 species).The average biomass(via dry weight)was 98.63 g/m^(2),consisting of green algae(8.39 g/m^(2)),brown algae(35.08 g/m^(2)),and red algae(55.16 g/m^(2)).The dominant macroalgae species in terms of biomass were Corallina pilulifera,Sargassum thunbergii,and Ulva australis in the intertidal zones,and Botryocladia wrightii and Gelidium elegans in the subtidal ***,evenness,and diversity indices based on the biomass of abundant species were 5.08,0.65,and 2.30,respectively,over the entire study *** on the evaluation of the environmental states by the community indices,overall,the Ecological Evaluation Index of macroalgae communities in the study area was marked as“Good-Moderate”,but was determined as“ModerateLow”at several sites during *** results can be a direct approach in the assessment of coastal habitats in which anthropogenic as well as climate change influences persist.

BACKGROUND A recent retrospective study confirmed that hepatic stiffness and splenic stiffness measured with magnetic resonance elastography(MRE) are strongly associated with the presence of esophageal varices. In addition, strong correlations have been reported between splenic stiffness values measured with MRE and hepatic venous pressure gradients in animal models. However, most studies have been conducted on adult populations, and previous pediatric MRE studies have only demonstrated the feasibility of MRE in pediatric populations, while the actual clinical application of spleen MRE has been *** To assess the utility of splenic stiffness measurements by MRE to predict gastroesophageal varices in *** We retrospectively reviewed abdominal MRE images taken on a 3 T system in pediatric patients. Patients who had undergone Kasai operations for biliary atresia were selected for the Kasai group, and patients with normal livers and spleens were selected for the control group. Two-dimensional spin-echo echoplanar MRE acquisition centered on the liver, with a pneumatic driver at 60 Hz and a low amplitude, was performed to obtain hepatic and splenic stiffness values. Laboratory results for aspartate aminotransferase to platelet ratio index(APRI) were evaluated within six months of MRE, and the normalized spleen size ratio was determined with the upper normal size limit. Adult human neural stem cell therapeutics: Current developmental status and prospect

Over the past two decades, regenerative therapies using stem cell technologies have been developed for various neurological diseases. Although stem cell therapy is an attractive option to reverse neural tissue damage and to recover neurological deficits, it is still under development so as not to show significant treatment effects in clinical settings. In this review, we discuss the scientific and clinical basics of adult neural stem cells(a NSCs), and their current developmental status as cell therapeutics for neurological disease. Compared with other types of stem cells, a NSCs have clinical advantages, such as limited proliferation, inborn differentiation potential into functional neural cells, and no ethical issues. In spite of the merits of a NSCs, difficulties in the isolation from the normal brain, and in the in vitro expansion, have blocked preclinical and clinical study using a NSCs. However, several groups have recently developed novel techniques to isolate and expand a NSCs from normal adult brains, and showed successful applications of a NSCs to neurological diseases. With new technologies for a NSCs and their clinical strengths, previous hurdles in stem cell therapies for neurological diseases could be overcome, to realize clinically efficacious regenerative stem cell therapeutics.

Comparative studies on the binding site of anesthetics to GABA a receptors using in silico docking methods

Polyurethane-based Actuators with Various Polyols

This study dealt with the electrostrictive responses of polyurethane （PU） actuators with different microphase separation structure, which was a promising candidate for a material used in polymer actuators. In order to construct PUs with different higher-order structure, PUs with various types of polyol were synthesized： poly（neopentyl glycol adipate）（PNAD）, poly（tetramethylene glycol）（PTMG）, and poly（dimethyl siloxnae）（PDMS）. Synthesized PU was characterized by Fourier transform-infrared （FT-IR） spectroscopy and gel per- meation chromatography （GPC）. Thermal analysis and mechanical properties of PU films were carried out with differential scanning calorimetry （DSC） and UTM （universal testing machine）, respectively. And PU actuator was formed in a type of monomorph, which was made by carbon black electrodes on the both surfaces of PU film by spin coating method. Actuation behavior was mainly influenced on microphase separation struc- ture and mechanical property of PU. In result, PU actuator with PNAD, polyester urethane, had the largest field-induced displacement.

Flux Optimization During Tapping in BOF Process

An integrated Plate Mill has started it’s operation on July 7, 2010 in Gwangyang Steelworks, POSCO. The production capability is about 2.5 million tons per year and the main stream consists of Blast Furnace, Hot metal pretreatment (KR), Converter, Bubbling Station, RH/VTD and Continuous Casting. Particularly, it is possible to control sulfur concentration at excellent level in BOF without any further treatment in LF or VTD, which is attained by unique KR process and scrap usage strategy in BOF. In this paper, desulfurization efficiency and steel cleanliness was introduced by optimizing flux amount during tapping in BOF process. In addition, the effect of the flux addition on the refractory of ladle was investigated based on EPMA analyses with the viewpoint of phase diagram. The cleanliness of each sample was examined using optical emission spectrometry and oxygen nitrogen determinator.
