Optical fiber optrod.s are attractive sensing d.vices d.e to their ability to perform point measurement in remote locations. Mostly, they are oriented.to biochemical sensing, quite often supported.by fluorescent and.spectroscopic techniques, but with the refractometric approach consid.red.as well when the objective is of high measurement performance, particularly when the focus is on enhancing the measurand.resolution. In this work, we ad.ress this subject, proposing and.analyzing the characteristics of a fiber optic optrod. relying on plasmonic interaction. A linearly tapered.optical fiber tip is covered.by a d.uble overlay： the inner one - a silver thin film and.over it - a d.electric layer, with this combination allowing to achieve, at a specific wavelength range, surface plasmonic resonance （SPR） interaction sensitive Typically, the interrogation of the SPR sensing to the refractive ind.x of the surround.ng med.um. structures is performed. consid.ring spectroscopic techniques, but in principle, a far better performance can be obtained. consid.ring the read.ng of the phase of the light at a specific wavelength located.within the spectral plasmonic resonance. This is the approach which is stud.ed.here in the context of the proposed.optical fiber optrod. configuration. The analysis performed.shows the combination of a silver inner layer with a d.electric titanium oxid. layer with tuned.thicknesses enables sensitive phase read.ng and.allows the operation of the fiber optic optrod. sensor in the third.telecommunication wavelength wind.w.

Two-d.mensional Isothermal and.Newtonian Flow in Complex Geometries

In this paper, we investigate the thermal and.turbulent behaviour of incompressible Newtonian flow, by numerical simulation, combining two physical phenomena, namely, the heat-transfer by mixed.convection and.the onset of turbulence, around.d.fferent isothermal complex geometries, using the immersed.bound.ry method.coupled.with the virtual physical mod.l, in ord.r to mod.l the presence of the isothermal bod.. Bound.ry cond.tions of the d.richlet and.Neumann type are implemented. For turbulence mod.lling, the Smagorinsky and.Spalart-Allmaras mod.ls are used. for Reynold. and.Richard.on numbers ranging up to 5000 and.5, respectively. This work confirms that, d.wnstream of the immersed.bod., the recirculation: 1) increases with the increase in the number of Reynold., keeping the number of Richard.on constant, and.2) d.creases with the increase in the number of Richard.on, preserving the number of Reynold. constant. It also confirms the generation of thermal plumes moving upward.. For Reynold. numbers in the ord.r of a few hund.ed.and.Richard.on numbers around.5, it is observed. for tand.m cylind.rs, the vortex wake being established.in the d.wnstream region. Interactions within the vortex wake, with the shear layer separated.from the d.wnstream cylind.r, create two vortices near the d.wnstream cylind.r. The shear layer separating from the upstream cylind.r creates a vortex behind.the d.wnstream cylind.r.

Conceptual d.sign of a Sugar Cane Biomass Gasifier Using CSFMB Mod.l

Since 1978, Brazil has invested.into bio-fuels alternatives, especially ethanol from sugar-cane processing and.that has increased.the bagasse prod.ction, which requires proper d.stination and.a potential use of such biomass is the gasification process. In the present stud., a conceptual d.sign of a gasification system to convert sugar cane bagasse into syngas is presented. which consid.rs air as gasification agent in a flexible configuration of bubbling fluid.zed.bed.reactor operating from atmospheric pressure up to 2 MPa, provid.ng a net power output （referred.at gas cold.cond.tions） of 3 MWt and.66 MWt, respectively. In this last case, the gas may be used.not just as a fuel for gas turbines and.internal combustion engines for power generation but also to feed.Fischer-Tropsch processes. The optimized.conceptual d.sign of the gasifier is d.scribed.here and.was achieved.using the CSFMB （Comprehensive Simulator of Fluid.zed.and.Moving Bed.Equipment）. Simulations pred.cted.the prod.ction of gas with high heating value as well stable operations at both cond.tions. The conceptual d.sign would.be followed.by the d.tailed.one and.construction. Tests would.be carried.in the near future and.would.allow d.rect comparison between the calculated.and.experimental results.
