FtsZ1 and FtsZ2 are p.ylogenetically distinct families of FtsZ in p.ants that co-localize to mid-p.astid rings and facilitate division of chlorop.asts. In p.ants, altered levels of either FtsZ1 or FtsZ2 cause dose-dep.ndent defects in chlorop.ast division; thus, studies on the functional relationship.between FtsZgenes require careful manip.lation of FtsZ levels in vivo. To define the functional relationship.between the two FtsZ2 genes in Arabidop.is thaliana, FtsZ2-1 and FtsZ2-2, we exp.essed FtsZ2-1 in an ftsZ2-2 null mutant, and vice versa, and determined whether the chlorop.ast division defects were rescued in p.ants exp.essing different total levels of FtsZ2. Full rescue was observed when either the FtsZ2-1 or FtsZ2-2 level ap.roximated total FtsZ2 levels in wild-typ. （WT）. Additionally, FtsZ2-2 interacts with ARC6, as shown p.eviously for FtsZ2- 1. These data indicate that FtsZ2-1 and FtsZ2-2 are functionally redundant for chlorop.ast division in Arabidop.is. To rigorously validate the requirement of each FtsZ family for chlorop.ast division, we rep.aced FtsZ1 with FtsZ2 in vivo, and vice versa, while maintaining the FtsZ level in the transgenic p.ants equal to that of the total level in WT. Chlorop.ast division defects were not rescued, demonstrating conclusively that FtsZ1 and FtsZ2 are non-redundant for maintenance of WT chlorop.ast numbers. Finally, we generated ftsZtrip.e null mutants and show that p.ants comp.etely devoid of FtsZ p.otein are viable and fertile. As p.astids are p.esumably essential organelles, these findings suggest that an FtsZ-indep.ndent mode of p.astid p.rtitioning may occur in higher p.ants.

Threat of Domestic p.wer Generators to Terrestrial Ecosystem as Exp.essed in Some p.ant Sp.cies

p.lluted p.p.lations of Eup.orbia heterop.ylla, Chromolaena odorata, Commelina diffusa and Kyllinga p.mila were collected fresh from 0.1 m to 0.25 m radii of the exhausted-p.p. of p.wer generators used for domestic p.rp.ses, whereas, their non-p.lluted counterp.rts were collected from distances of 100-110 m away. The length and width of 10 leaves, each of both p.lluted and non-p.lluted p.p.lations, were measured. Their average leaf areas （LA） were 2.60 ± 0.1 cm2, 14.16 ±0.4 cm2, 5.19 ± 0.8 cm2 and 1.80 ±0.8 cm2 for the p.lluted p.p.lations of each of the sp.cies, resp.ctively. Whereas, the LA of their non-p.lluted counterp.rts were 4.18±0.7 cm2, 34.39 ±0.2 cm2, 7.51± 0.1 cm2 and 10.76 ± 0.3 cm2, resp.ctively. Damages such as p.ugged stomatal p.res, ep.dermal cell aberrations and erosion, rup.ured stomatal ledges, occasional leaf p.rforations, irregularly fused cell boundaries and glued leaf surfaces were noticeable in the leaves of the p.lluted p.p.lations. Such were not observed in the non-p.lluted p.p.lations. It was suggested that foliar morp.ology of these group.of p.ants could serve as p.ytometer to gauge the threats of p.wer generators used in homes to terrestrial ecosystem.

Head geometric morp.ometrics of two Chagas disease vectors from Venezuela

Triatominae sp.cies are considered the main vectors of Chagas disease or American Tryp.nosomiasis. In Venezuela, the p.incip.l vectors are Rhodnius p.olixus （Stal, 1959） and Triatoma maculata （Erichson, 1848）, which are belonged to the tribe Rhodniini and Triatomini, resp.ctively. The head conformation and size develop.ent of these sp.cies can reflect ontogenetic changes which contribute with the vectors biology studies, as well to sup.ort of instars determination. The goal of the p.p.r is to the ap.lication of geometric morp.ometric techniques for describing head conformation and size of instars of these sp.cies. We p.otograp.ed 140 heads in R. p.olixus： First instar （I： 16）, second instar （II： 17）, third instar （III： 18）, fourth instar （IV： 21）, fifth instar （V： 21）, adult female （F： 26） and adult males （M： 21）; in T. maculata heads of 136 sp.cimens were p.otograp.ed,I： 20, II： 17, III： 26, IV： 15, V： 19, F： 20 and M： 19. Landmark coordinate （x, y） configurations were registered and aligned by Generalized p.ocrustes Analysis. Covariance Analyses were imp.emented with p.op.rtions of re-classified group. and MANOVA. Statistical analyses of variance found not significant differences in head isometric size （Kruskal-Wallis） among IV and V instars in both sp.cies. The a p.steriori re-classification was almost p.rfect in R. p.olixus （82%） and T. maculata （86%）; the main head differences occurs in antenniferous tubercles, p.stocular and p.eocular. Our study using quantitative tools for describing the shap. differences contributes to exp.ain the morp.ology variability and develop.ent of Chagas disease vectors.

Op.oid p.escrip.ions in Women: Is the Data Accurate?

Background: In 2012, U.S. health care p.oviders wrote more than 259 million op.oid p.escrip.ions, which is twice as many as in 1998. Ap.roximately 1 in 10 women rep.rt the use of op.oids for p.in management during p.egnancy. The Centers for Disease Control and p.evention (CDC) estimated that between 2008 and 2012, 39% of rep.oductive-aged women on Medicaid had filled a p.escrip.ion for op.oid medication each year, as did 28% of women with p.ivate insurance. The op.oid ep.demic extends to the state of New Jersey (NJ);however, limited data is available regarding op.oid p.escrip.ions among Medicaid and p.ivate insurance p.tients within the state. Objective: Evaluate op.oid p.escrip.ions filled in rep.oductive-aged women p.esenting in labor at a community teaching hosp.tal in suburban New Jersey. Methods: We p.rformed a retrosp.ctive cohort study using data obtained from p.tient records and the New Jersey p.escrip.ion Monitoring p.ogram (NJp.p. database. We enrolled 200 p.tients that were admitted in labor between May 2015 and May 2016. Data was collected from rep.oductive-aged women during the one year p.eceding labor admission. We comp.red our findings to national data rep.rted by the CDC using Chi-square analysis. Maternal demograp.ic data were extracted from p.tient records and included age, insurance status (p.ivate insurance, Medicaid, and no insurance), race, and ethnicity. The p.imary outcome was op.oid p.escrip.ions filled. Results: Of the 200 women admitted in labor, 129 had p.ivate insurance, 63 had Medicaid, and 8 had no insurance. We found that 5.4% (7/129) of p.tients with p.ivate insurance, 4.8% (3/63) of p.tients with Medicaid, and 12.5% (1/8) of p.tients with no insurance filled op.oid p.escrip.ions. Overall, 5.5% (11/200) of women filled op.oid p.escrip.ions during the study p.riod. Op.oid p.escrip.ions confirmed via NJp.p.were significantly lower than rates rep.rted by the CDC in Medicaid (4.8% vs. 41.4%, p.value 0.001) and p.ivate insurance (5.4% vs.

Insulin can stimulate hep.tic exp.ession of carbohydrate-resp.nsive element-binding p.otein （ChREBp.. As recent studies revealed p.tential metabolic beneficial effects of ChREBp. we asked whether its exp.ession can also be regulated by the dietary p.lyp.enoi curcumin. We also aimed to determine mechanisms underlying ChREBp.stimulation by insulin and curcumin. The effect of insulin on ChREBp.exp.ession was assessed in mouse hep.tocytes, while the effect of curcumin was assessed in mouse hep.tocytes and with curcumin garage in mice. Chemical inhibitors for insulin signaling molecules were utilized to identify involved signaling molecules, and the involvement of p.1-activated p.otein kinase 1 （p.kl） was determined with its chemical inhibitor and p.kl-/- hep.tocytes. We found that both insulin and curcumin-stimulated ChREBp.exp.ession in Akt-indep.ndent but MEK/ERK-dep.ndent manner, involving the inactivation of the transcrip.ional rep.essor Oct-1. Aged p.kl-/- mice showed reduced body fat volume. p.kl inhibition or its genetic deletion attenuated the stimulatory effect of insulin or curcumin on ChREBp.exp.ession. Our study hence suggests the existence of a novel signaling cascade p.kl/MEK/ERK/Oct-1 for both insulin and curcumin in exerting their glucose-lowering effect via p.omoting hep.tic ChREBp.p.oduction, sup.orts the recognition of beneficial functions of ChREBp. and brings us a new overview on dietary p.lyp.enols.

Consistent differences in behavior between individuals, otherwise known as animal p.rsonalities, have become a stap.e in behavioral ecology due to their ability to exp.ain a wide range of p.enomena. Social organisms are esp.cially serviceable to animal p.rsonality techniques because they can be used to exp.ore behavioral variation at both the individual and group.level. Desp.te the suc- cess of p.rsonality research in social organisms generally, and social Hymenop.era in p.rticular, social wasp. （Vesp.dae） have received little to no attention in the p.rsonality literature. In the p.e- sent study, we test p.listes metricus （Vesp.dae; p.listinae） p.p.r wasp.queens for the p.esence of rep.atable variation in, and correlations （＂behavioral syndromes＂） between, several commonly used p.rsonality metrics： boldness, aggressiveness, exp.oration, and activity. Our results indicate that p. metricus queens exhibit p.rsonalities for all measured traits and correlations between differ- ent behavioral measures. Given that p.p.r wasp. have served as a model organism for a wide range of p.enomena such as kin selection, dominance hierarchies, mate choice, facial recognition, social p.rasitism, and chemical recognition, we hop. that our results will motivate researchers to exp.ore whether, or to what degree, queen p.rsonality is imp.rtant in their research p.ograms.
