In plants, the shoot apical meristem (SAM) is essential for the growth of aboveground organs. However, little is known about its molecular responses to abiotic stresses. Here, we show that the SAM of Arabidopsis thaliana displays an autonomous heat-stress (HS) memory of a previous non-lethal HS, allowing the SAM to regain growth after exposure to an otherwise lethal HS several days later. Using RNA sequencing, we identified genes participating in establishing the SAM's HS transcriptional memory, including the stem cell (SC) regulators CLAVATA1 (CLV1) and CLV3, HeAT SHOCK PROTeIN 17.6A (HSP17.6A), and the primary carbohydrate metabolism gene FRUCTOSe-BISPHOSPHATe ALDOLASe 6 (FBA6). We demonstrate that sugar availability is essential for survival of plants at high temperature. HeAT SHOCK TRANSCRIPTION FACTOR A2 (HSFA2A) directly regulates the expression of HSP17.6A and FBA6 by binding to the heat-shock elements in their promoters, indicating that HSFA2 is required for transcriptional activation of SAM memory genes. Collectively, these findings indicate that plants have evolved a sophisticated protection mechanism to maintain SCs and, hence, their capacity to re-initiate shoot growth after stress release.

Report of a Dicephalic Steppes Ratsnake (elaphe dione) Collected in South Korea

This study investigated the in vitro fermentation profiles of human milk oligosaccharides(HMOs) by different dominating infant microbiota(***-, ***-and Bacteroides-dominated inocula). We sought to evaluate fecal microbiota composition of healthy infant donors in Guangzhou(including breast-feeding and formula-feeding). Further, we were expected to study in vitro fermentation outcomes of six commercial HMOs [i.e., 2 -fucosyllactose(2 -FL), 3-fucosyllactose(3-FL), 3 -sialyllactose(3 -SL), 6 -sialyllactose(6 -SL), lacto-Ntetraose(LNT) and lacto-N-neotetraose(LNnT)], fructo-oligosaccharide(FOS) and galacto-oligosaccharides(GOS) by using individual infant fecal inocula. Methods Nineteen healthy donors were selected at Guangzhou, China. Nine infants were qualified and enrolled in the experiment. each 50 mg of carbohydrate sample was equivalently weighted into anaerobic tubes and fermented with fecal slurry at 37 °C water bath with gentle shaking for various time periods. Total gas production of each tube was measured by inserting the needle through rubber stopper with a graduated syringe. The concentration of short chain fatty acids(SCFAs) was determined by gas chromatography, and the concentration of organic acids(OAs) was determined by high performance liquid chromatography. DNA extraction from the fermented products was performed using the OMeGA Soil DNA Kit(M5635-02)(Omega Bio-Tek, Norcross, GA, USA), following the manufacturer s instruction. The nearly full-length bacterial 16 S rRNA from each purified DNA sample was performed to investigate microbiota composition. Results Fecal microbiota composition and microbiota classification It was noteworthy that three distinct clusters of infant gut microbiota were shown among nineteen infants. In this report, we describe morphological characteristics of a dicephalic Steppes Ratsnake （elaphe dione） collected from the wild in 2011 in South Korea. The specimen has two heads and two long necks. Unlike normal individuals, the dicephalic snake has divided ventral scales under the necks of the bifurcated columns. The snout- vent length （SVL） and overall total length of the individual are shorter than those of normal snakes of the same age. Nevertheless, the counts of nine different scale types that are often used for classification are all within the ranges of normal individuals. As far as we know, this is the first detailed morphological description of a dicephalic e. dione in the scientific literature.

The New Caledonia Ophiolite(Peridotite Nappe), represents about one third of the island’s surface(i.e. 5 500 km2). The ophiolite is composed of harzburgites, dunites, lherzolites, minor mafic-ultramafic cumulates, and various dykes and sills. The mantle section underwent a polyphase evolution, which involved prominent depletion and re-fertilization. The oldest events are probably recorded by abyssal-type lherzolites of the northern massifs, which bear traces of moderate partial melting. Plagioclase lherzolites were formed by shallow entrapment of highly depleted MORB melt in residual spinel lherzolites. Nd isotope compositions are consistent with derivation from an asthenospheric mantle source that experienced a recent MORB-producing depletion. This evolution was most likely accomplished during the late Cretaceous breakup of the eastern Australian margin. The harzburgite-dunite association, which forms the bulk of Peridotite Nappe was probably formed through a multistage magma-producing process. Harzburgites composition may have be obtained by a first phase of ~15% dry fractional melting, followed by 15%–18% hydrous melting in a supra-subduction zone setting. Variable εNd negatively correlate with 87Sr/86Sr, while Pb isotopes cover a wide range, trending from depleted mantle towards enriched, sediment-like, compositions. Such signatures likely reflect the evolution of a highly depleted forearc mantle wedge variably modified by different fluid and melt inputs during eocene subduction. The harzburgite-dunite set is overlain by a dunite transition zone ~300 m thick, in turn discontinuously covered by cumulate lenses consisting of layered pyroxenites, dunites, and wherlites at the base and gabbronorites/websterites on top. The mafic cumulates crystallized from primitive, ultra-depleted melts in the nascent lower fore-arc crust. Novel applications of nanotechnology may lead to the release of engineered nanoparticles（eNPs）, which result in concerns over their potential environmental hazardous impact. It is essential for the research workers to be able to quantitatively characterise eNPs in the environment and subsequently to assist the risk assessment of the eNPs. This study hence explored the application of nanoparticle tracking system（NTA） to quantitatively describe the behaviour of the eNPs in natural sediment-water systems. The NTA allows the measurement of both particle number concentration（PNC） and particle size distribution（PSD） of the eNPs. The developed NTA method was applied to a range of gold and magnetite eNPs with a selection of surface properties. The results showed that the positively-charged eNPs interacted more strongly with the sediment than neutral and negatively-charged eNPs. It was also found that the citrate coated Au eNPs had a higher distribution percentage（53%） than 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid coated Au eNPs（20%） and citrate coated magnetite eNPs（21%）. The principles of the electrostatic interactions between hard（and soft） acids and bases（HSAB） are used to explain such behaviours; the hard base coating（i.e. citrate ions） will interact more strongly with hard acid（i.e. magnetite） than soft acid（i.e. gold）.The results indicate that NTA is a complementary method to existing approaches to characterise the fate and behaviour of eNPs in natural sediment.
