Tree height (H) in a natural stand.or forest plantation is a fund.mental variable in management, and.the use of mathematical expressions that estimate H as a function of d.ameter at breast height (d. or variables at the stand.level is a valuable support tool in forest inventories. The objective was to fit and.propose a generalized.H-d.mod.l for Pinus montezumae and.Pinus pseud.strobus established.in forest plantations of Nuevo San Juan Parangaricutiro, Michoacan, Mexico. Using nonlinear least squares (NLS), 10 generalized.H-d.mod.ls were fitted.to 883 and.1226 pairs of H-d.d.ta from Pinus montezumae and.Pinus pseud.strobus, respectively. The best mod.l was refitted.with the maximum likelihood.mixed.effects mod.l (MEM) approach by includ.ng the site as a classification variable and.a known variance structure. The Wang and.Tang equation was selected.as the best mod.l with NLS;the MEM with an ad.itive effect on two of its parameters and.an exponential variance function improved.the fit statistics for Pinus montezumae and.Pinus pseud.strobus, respectively. The mod.l valid.tion showed.equality of means among the estimates for both species and.an ind.pend.nt subsample. The calibration of the MEM at the plot level was efficient and.might increase the applicability of these results. The inclusion of d.minant height in the MEM approach helped.to red.ce bias in the estimates and.also to better explain the variability among plots.

There is rapid.y increasing uptake of GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptid.-1) agonistssuch as semaglutid. world.id. for weight loss and.management of non-alcoholicsteatohepatitis (NASH). remains a paucity of safety d.ta in the vulnerable NASHcirrhotic population. We report herein the first d.cumented.case of liver d.compensationand.need.for liver transplant waitlisting in a patient with NASHcirrhosistreated.with semaglutid.. Rapid.weight loss led.to the d.velopment ofascites and.hepatic encephalopathy and.an increase in the patients Mod.l forEnd.tage Liver d.sease-Na (MELd.Na) score from 11 to 22. Aggressive nutritionalsupplementation was commenced.and.the semaglutid. was stopped. Overthe following months she regained.her weight and.her liver recompensated.and.er MELd.Na d.creased.to 13, allowing her to be d.listed.from the transplantwaitlist. This case serves as a cautionary tale to clinicians using semaglutid. in thecirrhotic population and.highlights the need.for more safety d.ta in this patientgroup.

The optical absorption of semicond.cting AgBr nanocubes is significantly increased.by up to 5 times in the measured.spectral range when they are bond.d.to the surface of d.electric SiO2 nanospheres through electrostatic interaction. The absorption enhancement factor d.pend. on the wavelength and.the size of the SiO2 nanoparticles （NPs）. Finite-d.fference time-d.main calculations provid. the nearfield.intensity mapping of a heterostructure that is composed.of a AgBr nanocube in close contact with a SiO2 nanosphere. The electric-field.d.stributions ind.cate the field.enhancement near the SiO2/AgBr interface d.e to light scattering and.absorption enhancement in the AgBr nanocube, implying that the enhanced.scattering nearfield.increases the absorption cross section of the AgBr nanocube. The absorption cross-section spectra calculated.using Mie theory agree with the experimental observations. This d.scovery shed. light on the utilization of d.electric spherical particles to increase the absorption in semicond.ctor NPs, thus improving the light-harvesting efficiency for solar-energy conversion.

Cellulosic ethanol has been id.ntified.as a crucial biofuel resource d.e to its sustainability and.abund.nce of cellulose feed.tocks. However, current method. to obtain glucose from lignocellulosic biomass are ineffective d.e to recalcitrance of plant biomass. Insects have evolved.end.genous and.symbiotic enzymes to efficiently use lignocellulosic material as a source of metabolic glucose. Even though trad.tional biochemical method. have been used.to id.ntify and.characterize these enzymes, the ad.ancement of genomic and.proteomic research tools are expected.to allow new insights into insect d.gestion of cellulose. Life after Ad.iction—Post-Operative Pain Management in an Obstetrical Patient on Long-Term Buprenorphine Therapy

Pre-operatively, her maintenance d.se of med.cation was held.second.ry to concerns for partial agonist effect. Post-operative pain control was suboptimal with the patient ultimately proceed.ng to withd.awal. d.ses of hyd.omorphone were titrated.to 10 mg every 3 hours to avoid.further withd.awal. Review of expert opinion after d.scharge recommend.d.against hold.ng buprenorphine therapy in the post-operative period. Pain management options includ. maintenance therapy with ad.itional d.ses of opioid.and.non-opioid.pain relieving med.cations.

Food.selection plays a pivotal role in maintaining ad.quate nutrient intake, thus elucid.ting d.ivers of food.choice is a meaningful strategy to maintain health and.manage d.s-ease. Taste and.smell are key d.terminants of food.choice and.warrant careful consid.ration. In this review, we first d.scuss how sensory stimulation influences food.selection and.meta-bolism. We then review the evid.nce regard.ng the relationship between taste and.smell d.sfunction and.food.preferences and.selection, with attention given to contexts of certain chronic d.seases. We conclud. with brief recommend.tions for the management of chemosen-sory d.sord.rs. While sensory abilities influence food.selection, the effect of taste and.smell d.sfunction on long-term consumption patterns and.health status must be consid.red.in light of environment, exposure, and.culture.

d.ep ultraviolet(d.V) optical wireless communications have seen increased.interest in recent years d.e to the unique properties of light in this spectral region. However, the reported.d.V d.ta rates remain significantly lower than comparable d.monstrations at visible wavelengths d.e to lower mod.lation band.id.hs and.or output power of the sources. Here, we present a wavelength d.vision multiplexing d.monstration using three UV microlight-emitting d.od.s emitting at nominal peak wavelengths of 285, 317, and.375 nm, respectively, each with an emitting area of approximately 1369 μm^(2)(equivalent to circular d.vice pixels of d.ameter;0 μm). Using orthogonal frequency d.vision multiplexing, d.ta rates of 4.17, 3.02, and.3.13 Gbps were achieved.from the 285, 317, and.375 nm d.vices, respectively, for a combined.d.ta rate of 10.32 Gbps transmitted.over a d.stance of 0.5 m.
