目的:研究扁桃体鳞癌(squamous cell carcinomas of the tonsil tonsillar,SCCs)中人乳头瘤病毒(human papillomavirus,HPV)感染与血管内皮生长因子(vascular endothelial growth factor,VEGF)和表皮生长因子受体(epidermal growth factor,EGFR)表达的关系,探讨HPV与EGFR和VEGF在扁桃体鳞癌发生中的交互效应。方法:采用多重实时荧光定量聚合酶链反应(multiplex real-time polymerase chain reaction,MT-PCR)检测85例扁桃体鳞癌HPV DNA及型别,通过HPV DNA分析进行HPV感染状况的测定;同时采用半定量免疫组化检测HPV(+)组和HPV(-)组中VEGF、EGFR蛋白表达情况。结果:扁桃体鳞癌中HPV感染率为49.4%(42/85),HPV-16型占所有感染者的比例为90.5%(38/42),明显高于其他型别;HPV(+)组EGFR蛋白表达明显低于HPV(-)组(P值均<0.01);HPV(+)组与HPV(-)组VEGF蛋白表达无明显差异;此外,VEGF表达与EGFR、患者的年龄、性别、TNM分期、组织学分级均无明显相关性。结论:HPV感染与扁桃体鳞癌的发生存在相关性,HPV相关的扁桃体鳞癌中,HPV基因可能通过改变EGFR表达致癌,为HPV致癌机理进一步研究提供一个新的视角,具有重要的理论意义。

Severe burn causes significant metabolic derangements that make nutritional support uniquely important and challenging for burned patients. Burn injury causes a persistent and prolonged hypermetabolic state and increased catabolism that results in increased muscle wasting and cachexia. Metabolic rates of burn patients can surpass twice normal, and failure to fulfill these energy requirements causes impaired wound healing, organ dysfunction,and susceptibility to infection. Adequate assessment and provision of nutritional needs is imperative to care for these patients. There is no consensus regarding the optimal timing, route, amount, and composition of nutritional support for burn patients, but most clinicians advocate for early enteral nutrition with highcarbohydrate *** support must be individualized, monitored, and adjusted throughout recovery. Further investigation is needed regarding optimal nutritional support and accurate nutritional endpoints and goals.

Fish passage is important to the overall health of an ecosystem. Therefore, it is important to be able to accurately predict flow conditions within a stream crossing for high and low flow periods. This paper evaluates the effect of relative water depth on the hydraulic roughness of culverts at low discharge. A 21 m long, 0.8 m diameter corrugated steel pipe with 0.068 × 0.013 m annular corrugations was used. For relative depths below 0.5, Manning’s n was found to increase with decreasing relative depth. An equation was developed to predict relative depths below 0.5 within a corrugated steel pipe based on the corrugation height, slope and culvert diameter. While Manning’s equation does perform reasonably well, the percent difference from the measured to predicted water levels warrants the use of an additional prediction method at low flows.

AIM: To evaluate the benefits of low-volume polyethylene glycol(PEG) with ascorbic acid compared to fulldose PEG for colonoscopy preparation. METHODS: MEDLINE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and Database of Systematic Reviews, CINAHL, Pub Med, and recent abstracts from major conferences were searched(January 2012). Only randomized-controlled trials on adult subjects comparing lowvolume PEG(2 L) with ascorbic acid vs full-dose PEG(3 or 4 L) were included. Meta-analysis for the efficacy of low-volume PEG with ascorbic acid and full-dose PEG were analyzed by calculating pooled estimates of number of satisfactory bowel preparations as well as adverse patient events(abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting). Separate analyses were performed for each main outcome by using OR with fixed and random effects models. Heterogeneity was assessed by calculating the I2 measure of inconsistency. Rev Man 5.1 was utilized for statistical ***: The initial search identified 242 articles and trials. Nine studies(n = 2911) met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed for this meta-analysis with mean age range from 53.0 to 59.6 years. All studies were randomized controlled trials on adult patients comparing large-volume PEG solutions(3 or 4 L) with low-volume PEG solutions and ascorbic acid. No statistically significant difference was noted between lowvolume PEG with ascorbic acid and full-dose PEG for number of satisfactory bowel preparations(OR 1.07, 95%CI: 0.86-1.33, P = 0.56). No statistically significant difference was noted between low-volume PEG with ascorbic acid and full-dose PEG for abdominal pain(OR 1.09, 95%CI: 0.81-1.48, P = 0.56), nausea(OR 0.70, 95%CI: 0.49-1.00, P = 0.05), or vomiting(OR 0.99, 95%CI: 0.78-1.26, P = 0.95). No publication bias was ***: Low-volume PEG with the addition of ascorbic acid demonstrates no statistically significant difference to full-dose PEG for satisfactory bowel preparation and side-effects.

Inflammatory bowel diseases are characterised by inflammation that compromises the integrity of the epithelial barrier. The intestinal epithelium is not only a static barrier but has evolved complex mechanisms to control and regulate bacterial interactions with the mucosal surface. Apical tight junction proteins are critical in the maintenance of epithelial barrier function and control of paracellular permeability. The characterisation of alterations in tight junction proteins as key players in epithelial barrier function in inflammatory bowel diseases is rapidly enhancing our understanding of critical mechanisms in disease pathogenesis as well as novel therapeutic opportunities. Here we give an overview of recent literature focusing on the role of tight junction proteins, in particular claudins, in inflammatory bowel diseases and inflammatory bowel disease associated colorectal cancer.

OMEGA is a system for cultivating microalgae using wastewater contained in floating photobioreactors (PBRs) deployed in marine environments and thereby eliminating competition with agriculture for water, fertilizer, and land. The offshore placement in protected bays near coastal cities co-locates OMEGA with wastewater outfalls and sources of CO2-rich flue gas on shore. To evaluate the feasibility of OMEGA, microalgae were grown on secondary-treated wastewater supplemented with simulated flue gas (8.5% CO2 V/V) in a 110-liter prototype system tested using a seawater tank. The flow-through system consisted of tubular PBRs made of transparent linear low-density polyethylene, a gas exchange and harvesting column (GEHC), two pumps, and an instrumentation and control (I&C) system. The PBRs contained regularly spaced swirl vanes to create helical flow and mixing for the circulating culture. About 5% of the culture volume was continuously diverted through the GEHC to manage dissolved oxygen concentrations, provide supplemental CO2, harvest microalgae from a settling chamber, and add fresh wastewater to replenish nutrients. The I&C system controlled CO2 injection and recorded dissolved oxygen levels, totalized CO2 flow, temperature, circulation rates, photosynthetic active radiation (PAR), and the photosynthetic efficiency as determined by fast repetition rate fluorometry. In two experimental trials, totaling 23 days in April and May 2012, microalgae productivity averaged 14.1 ± 1.3 grams of dry biomass per square meter of PBR surface area per day (n = 16), supplemental CO2 was converted to biomass with >50% efficiency, and >90% of the ammonia-nitrogen was recovered from secondary effluent. If OMEGA can be optimized for energy efficiency and scaled up economically, it has the potential to contribute significantly to biofuels production and wastewater treatment.
