Soil mic.obial biomass and population in response to seasonal variation and age in Gmelina arborea plantations in south-western Nigeria

We investigated the Effec.s of plantation development, seasons, and soil depth on soil mic.obial indic.s in Gmelina arborea plantations in south-western Nigeria. Soil samples were obtained from the soil depths of 0-15 and 15-30 c. from plantations of six different ages during the rainy season, dry seasons, and their transitions. We used plate c.unt and fumigation-extrac.ion methods to determine mic.obe population and mic.obial biomass c.rbon （MB-c. and nitrogen （MB-N）, respec.ively. Plantation age did not affec. mic.obial indic.s, implying a non-signific.nt effec. of plantation development on mic.obial c.mmunities. It c.uld also imply that soil mic.obial indic.s had already stabilized in the sampled plantations. Seasonal variation and soil depth had signific.nt effec.s on mic.obial indic.s. At 0-15 c. soil depth, mean MB-c.inc.eased from 50.74 μg·g^-1 during the peak of the dry season （i.e. Marc.） to 99.58μg·g-1 during the peak of the rainy season （i.e. September）, while it inc.eased from 36.22μg·.g^-1 to 75.31μg·.g^-1 at 15-30 c. soil depth between the same seasonal periods. Bac.eria populations and MB-N showed similar inc.easing trends. c.rrelations between MB-c. MB-N, mic.obe populations, and rainfall were positive and linear. Signific.ntly higher mic.obial ac.ivities took plac. in the plantations during the rainy season, inc.eased with soil wetness, and dec.eased at greater soil depth.

Tropic.l forests c.ntain many tree spec.es that have supplied edible fruits for *** fruits have c.ntributed to human diets due to their ric.ness in nutrients,vitamins,minerals,antioxidants and their low antinutrients *** investigated the antioxidant,nutritional and anti-nutritional c.mposition of Garc.nia kola and c.rysophyllum albidum fruit *** nutritional,anti-nutritional and antioxidant c.mpositions differed depending on the fruit *** of fruit part,moisture c.ntent was high（72–93 %）.While the edible part（fruit pulp） of *** proved a better sourc. of protein（4）,fibre（17 %） and fat（2 %）,the seed kernel was a better sourc. of ash（2 %） and c.rbohydrate（15 %）.c.rbohydrate（22 %）,protein（2 %）,fat（1 %） and fibre（3 %） were higher in *** seed kernel（edible part） than in the pulp and ***-nutrient c.ntent in *** and *** fruits was low,indic.ting that their c.nsumption would not pose nutritional or health *** antioxidant c.mpositions（espec.ally phenolic.c.ntent（10–21 mg g-1） and DPPH（1,1-diphenyl–2 pic.ylhydrazyl）（26–55 %）） of *** fruit pulp and *** seed kernel were high,implying that they c.uld be good sourc.s of natural antioxidants and c.uld be used as supplements in food manufac.uring.
