敦巴顿橡树园中的连香树是北美最古老的连香树之一,在该花园建成之前就已存在。日本园艺大师藤元藏人受园方委托,检查并主导对这株古树的保护工作——“胡祖”(hoozue)是一种日本本土技术,通过对树木枝干进行一系列支撑,以使这株每况愈下的古老树木重新焕发青春。胡祖的建造和实施过程基于对树木的评估,包括对枝干结构的检查,以及对实施后未来几十年生长情况的预测。绳索、树皮保护裹布、钉子等材料的使用,以及木制胡祖本身的制作和安装都是依照日本本土知识和经验进行的,这些知识和经验也以图文的形式记录了下来。本文记述了这一保护项目的过程,展示了这一日本本土技术的重要意义。

An increased demand for iron is a hallmark of cancer cells and is thought necessary to promote high cell proliferation,tumor progression and *** makes iron metabolism an attractive therapeutic ***,current iron-based therapeutic strategies often lack effectiveness and can elicit off-target *** report here a dual-therapeutic prodrug,DOXjade,that allows for iron chelation chemo-photothermal cancer *** prodrug takes advantage of the clinically approved iron chelator deferasirox(ExJade®)and the topoisomerase 2 inhibitor,doxorubicin(DOX).Loading DOXjade onto ultrathin 2D Ti_(3)c_(2) MXene nanosheets produces a construct,Ti_(3)c_(2)-PVP@DOXjade,that allows the iron chelation and chemotherapeutic functions of DOXjade to be photo-activated at the tumor sites,while potentiating a robust photothermal effect with photothermal conversion efficiencies of up to 40%.Antitumor mechanistic investigations reveal that upon activation,Ti_(3)c_(2)-PVP@DOXjade serves to promote apoptotic cell death and downregulate the iron depletion-induced iron transferrin receptor(TfR).A tumor pH-responsive iron chelation/photothermal/chemotherapy antitumor effect was achieved both in vitro and in *** results of this study highlight what may constitute a promising iron chelation-based phototherapeutic approach to cancer therapy.

香港大学地球科学系西藏研究组的研究人员在过去5年的夏季对雅鲁藏布结合带进行了系统地质研究。80年代在日喀则地区的研究主要集中于蛇绿岩的成因（Allegre等，1984；Burg,1983;Durr,1996;Einsele等，1994；Girardeau等，1984，1985；Nicoas等，1981；Shacketon,1981;Tapponnier等，1981；Wang等，1987）,其解释主要建立在现有模式之上。笔者进行研究的目的是对现有模式加以验证，并对该区提出新的认识。现有模式认为，特提斯洋是在单一的长期向北俯冲过程中消亡的。这种解释过于简单。笔者（2000）研究后认为，特提斯洋内不止存在一个俯冲体系，雅鲁藏布结合带内保存着若干岩石构造组合。笔者在野外对地层关系进行了详细的观测，在实验室对微古和地质年代样品进行了细致的分析，在雅鲁藏布结合带内识别出若干孤立的地块及其它重要的单元，如砾岩单元，可确定各地体间相互作用的时代。

Microeukaryotes and bacteria are key drivers of primary productivity and nutrient cycling in aquaculture *** their diversity and composition have been widely investigated in aquaculture systems,the co-occurrence bipartite network between microeukaryotes and bacteria remains poorly *** study used the bipartite network analysis of high-throughput sequencing datasets to detect the co-occurrence relationships between microeukaryotes and bacteria in water and sediment from coastal aquaculture *** and fungi were dominant phyla in the microeukaryotic–bacterial bipartite networks in water and sediment,*** also had overrepresented links with bacteria in *** microeukaryotes and bacteria were classified as generalists,and tended to have symmetric positive and negative links with bacteria in both water and ***,some microeukaryotes with high density of links showed asymmetric links with bacteria in *** detection in the bipartite network indicated that four microeukaryotes and twelve uncultured bacteria might be potential keystone taxa among the module ***,the microeukaryotic–bacterial bipartite network in sediment harbored significantly more nestedness than that in *** loss of microeukaryotes and generalists will more likely lead to the collapse of positive co-occurrence relationships between microeukaryotes and bacteria in both water and *** study unveils the topology,dominant taxa,keystone species,and robustness in the microeukaryotic–bacterial bipartite networks in coastal aquaculture *** species herein can be applied for further management of ecological services,and such knowledge may also be very useful for the regulation of other eutrophic ecosystems.

Associated Factors for In-Hospital Mortality in Patients with Meningeal cryptococcosis and HIV Infection at a Local Hospital in Lima, Peru

Objective: To determine the associated factors for in-hospital mortality in patients with meningeal cryptococcosis and HIV infection at a local hospital in Lima, Perú. Materials and methods: We carried out a case-control study by reviewing the medical histories available at a local hospital in Lima, Peru. We determined the factors associated with mortality using a logistic regression model. Results: The information of 90 patients was analyzed, 37 dead and 53 alive. In the multivariate analysis we found two variables associated with mortality: Glasgow at admission (OR = 4.55 (1.61 – 12.20), p = 0.01) and serum antigen titer greater than 1024 (OR = 20.48 (1.6 – 261.04, p = 0.02). The protective factor found was a longer hospitalization stay (OR = 0.80 (0.69 – 0.93, p = 0.005).conclusions: A low Glasgow score and serum antigen titer greater than 1024 are associated factors with mortality, whereas hospitalization length is a protective factor.

A Study of Dairy Heifer Rearing Practices from Birth to Weaning and Their Associated costs on UK Dairy Farms

There are many inputs into the dairy replacement herd which impact not only on the cost of rearing heifers from birth to first calving, but also on their future longevity and production potential. This study determined the current cost of rearing dairy heifers in the UK through the calculation and analysis of individual costs on a subset of 102 UK dairy farms. Each farm was visited and an extensive heifer rearing questionnaire was completed. current heifer rearing practices were recorded to provide insight into critical management decisions. A cost analysis workbook was developed to calculate the costs of inputs in the preweaning period for labour, calving, feed, housing, health treatments and vaccinations, waste storage, machinery and equipment, and utilities. The average age at weaning was 62 d. The mean cost of rearing from birth to weaning was ￡195.19 per heifer with a mean daily cost of ￡3.14 (excluding the opportunity cost of the calf). This ranged from ￡1.68 to ￡6.11 among farms, reflecting major differences in management strategies and efficiency. The highest contribution to total costs came from feed (colostrum, milk, starter and forage) at 48.5% with milk feeding making up the greatest proportion of this at 37.3%. The next major expenses were bedding and labour, contributing 12.3% and 11.2% respectively. Unsurprisingly, delaying age at weaning increased total cost by ￡3.53 per day. Total costs were on average 45% higher on organic farms than conventional due to higher feed costs and later weaning. calving pattern also had a strong association with the total cost being lowest with spring calving, intermediate with autumn calving and highest in multi block and all year round calving herds.

Mastectomy Blood Loss: can We Predict the Need for Blood Transfusion?

Background: Bleeding during total mastectomy and axillary clearance is inevitable, and blood transfusion is often required when bleeding is excessive. Objectives: To predict the probability of transfusion, we tested the hypothesis: “The blood loss during total mastectomy and axillary clearance in Accra is related to the stage of the disease and the size of the breast”. Design: Patients undergoing total mastectomy and axillary clearance were prospectively studied from June 2008 to June 2011. The breast and used swabs were weighed immediately after surgery, and patients’ full blood count was checked before and after surgery. Setting: Surgical wards and theatres of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra. Results: There were 80 women, aged 31 to 85 (Mean 50, SD 3.4) years, with body mass index between 20 and 46 (mean 23.7, median 28). Fifty one (63.8%) had Stage 3 disease, and 47 (58.8%) required neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Pre-operative haemoglobin was 9.5 g/dl to 14.9g/dl (mean 11.6 g/dl, SD 1.1). Post-operative haemoglobin was 9.2 g/dl - 13.4 g/dl (mean 10.9, SD 0.97). The mean drop in haemoglobin level was 0.75 g/dl. None of the 80 patients received blood transfusion. There was a linear increase in breast weight with increasing BMI. Blood loss ranged from 95 g to 1185 g, with majority (59;73.8%) losing between 100 and 400 gram blood. Only 2 patients (2.5%) lost more than 1000 g of blood. Less than 400 g of blood was lost with breast weights below 2 kg. Above that, blood loss increased to more significant volumes. conclusions: Blood loss during total mastectomy and axillary clearance in Accra was directly related to the size of the breast. There was, however, inconclusive association between tumour stage and blood loss.

Analysis of the Management and costs Associated with Rearing Pregnant Dairy Heifers in the UK from conception to calving

Good management of the pregnant heifer is crucial to ensure that she is well grown and healthy and calves down easily before joining the milking herd. This study collected primary data on all aspects of heifer management on 101 UK farms during heifer pregnancy from conception to calving including farm factors and associated costs of system inputs. A cost analysis workbook was developed to calculate the cost of rearing per heifer for each of the study farms. Associations between cost of rearing and farms factors were determined using linear regression and analysis of variance. Heifers had a mean age of conception of 509 d (range 365 - 700 d) and an age at first calving of 784 d (range 639 - 973 d). The mean total cost of rearing during pregnancy was ￡450.36 (range ￡153.11 to ￡784.00) with a mean daily cost of ￡1.64 (range ￡0.56 to ￡2.86). The inputs contributing the most to cost were feed (32.7%), labour (23.8%) and slurry disposal (11.2%). Total purchased and homegrown feed and grazing contributed between 25.5% and 65.4% of total costs with a mean contribution of 43.6%. The cost of rearing was lowest in spring calving herds and highest in all year round calving herds with intermediate values in autumn and multi block calving herds. The main variables influencing the cost were the number of days spent at grass, age at first calving, calving pattern, breed, herd size and region. Each extra day in age at first calving increased the mean cost of rearing during pregnancy by ￡0.33/d whereas every extra day at grass reduced the cost by ￡1.75/d.

chronic hepatitis c(cHc) infection affects almost 3% of the global population and can lead to cirrhosis, liver failure, and hepatocellular carcinoma in a significant number of those infected. Until recently, the only treatments available were pegylated interferon and ribavirin, which traditionally were not very effective and have considerable side effects. For this reason, interest in complementary and alternative medications(cAM) in the management of hepatitis c has been investigated. Some cAM has demonstrated therapeutic potential in chronic hepatitis c treatment. Unfortunately, some cAM has been shown to have the potential to cause drug-induced liver injury. This article will review and evaluate many of the natural molecules that interact with the hepatitis c virus(HcV) life cycle and discuss their potential use and safety in HcV therapy, as well as highlight some important interactions between medical and complementary treatments.
