Hypoglycemic and High Dosage Effects of <i>Bidens pilosa</i>in Type-1 Diabetes Mellitus

Ethno-pharmaceutical products have received a lot of international attention in the scientific community in the management of diabetes mellitus (DM). In this study we determined the anti-diabetic and high dosage effects of Bidens pliosa in type 1 DM (T1DM). Methodology: Thirty rats were divided into six groups and subgrouped into the extract and non extract treatment groups. The extract treated group was subdivided into three groups which received 200 mg/kg, 400 mg/ kg and 800 mg/kg dosage treatments respectively. The blood glucose levels were monitored using a standard glucometer for one month, and biochemical analysis of the two liver function enzymes;Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were carried out at the Institute of Biomedical Research (IBR-KIU-WC) at the end of week IV. The study revealed that Bidens pilosa maintained hypoglycemia for a period of two weeks and this status was lost in subsequent weeks. T1DM rats treated with a dosage of 200 mg/kg showed a better recovery (355.25 - 164.5 mg/dl) of the glucose levels, followed by those that were being treated at 400 mg/kg. The AST and ALT enzymes in blood varied with a mean ± SEM (33.72 ± 32.32 to -7.23 ± 12.61 IU and 22.98 ± 11.12 to 42 ± 38.2 IU, respectively) in both the glibencimide? and in the 800 mg/ kg treatment groups in the study. High dosages of extract were associated (P = 0.049) with increased systemic enzyme leakage. In conclusion, tissue degeneration caused by high levels of the extract was accompanied by leakage of various enzymes (AST and ALT) into the blood, which could be a major etiological factor for the development of secondary systemic pathologies, thus potentially worsening the effects of an existing T1DM prognosis in human patients. Natural background radiation dose rate levels and incidences of reproductive abnormalities in high radiation area in Abeokuta, Southwestern Nigeria

A 10 y (1999-2008) birth records from two public and most accessible maternity hospitals locally in the city of Abeokuta, Nigeria were used to investigate the possible association of high outdoor gamma radiation exposure on reproductive abnormalities in the city. From the delivery record of 11,923 births in the period under study, a total number of 485 incidences of reproductive abnormalities were recoded. These incidences comprise 228 multiple births, 190 still births and, 67 premature births. Using the available terrestrial gamma radiation exposure data for the city and different reproductive abnormalities, regression assessment was carried out using the Pearson Product Moment (PPM) correlation statistics. The correlation showed that the incidences of reproductive abnormalities and the radiation dose levels were negatively correlated and correlation coefficient values were very low for each of the reproductive abnormalities considered. Factors such as socio-economic potentials of patients, dietary and other environmental factors may have substantial influence on the reproductive defects in the area other than radiation. However, the present study has added to the radiometric information needed in understanding the relationship between natural outdoor radiation exposure and occurrences of reproductive abnormalities in areas of high radiation in the country.

Combination of Sorbents and Modification of Its Constituents to Enhance the Mopping Ability of Chemically Modified and Unmodified Biological Wastes on Crude Oil and Its Lower Fractions

Protein wastes (feathers, goat hair) and cellulosic wastes (corn cob, coconut husks) were collected, washed with detergent solution, thoroughly rinsed and sun dried for 2 days before drying in an oven and then ground, half of ground material was carbonized at a maximum temperature of 500?C after mixing with *** carbonized parts were pulverized;both carbonized and uncarbonized sorbents were sieved into two particle sizes of 325 μm and 625 μm using mechanical sieve.1.5 g protein wastes and cellulosic wastes were each used to mop up spilled crude oil, diesel, kerosene and petrol (separately before combining) by encasing them in a sac like boom of 2cm x 2cm x 1cm dimension so as to determine the efficacy of waste sorbents in cleaning hydrocarbon spills. Results of Tables 1(a)-4(a), 1(b)-4(b) and 5-8 shows that the sorbents mopped, desorbed and retained an average of more than 500%, 350% and 300% of their weight of the hydrocarbon sorbates within average of 90 mins contact time, the volume of sorbates mopped up increased significantly when equal weight of activated and unactivated sorbents were combined, the results of equal combination of activated and unactivated sorbents at each particle size and contact time were compared with that of calculated values, high percentage retention observed were a function of mechanism of absorption/adsorption. Each sorbent have a distinct feature that enhances its mopping ability. Large volumes of the hydrocarbon liquids were recovered by mere pressing, the sorbates were mopped up in the order;crude oil > diesel > kerosene > petrol. Protein sorbents with oleophilic and aqua phobic properties absorbed more of all the hydrocarbon liquids than cellulosic sorbents at any particle size and contact, the later tend to be more abundant and therefore cost effective;it was observed that both carbonized and uncarbonized sorbents are good hydrocarbon mops and therefore good alternative to synthetic polyurethane foam already in use. Impact of Oil and Gas Activities on Acidity of Rain and Surface Water of Niger Delta, Nigeria: An Environmental and Public Health Review

Acidic aerosols resulting from gas flaring and refinery operations in the Niger Delta are a serious environmental and public health concern. Several thousand tons of flue gas components (dust particles, SOx, CO and NOx) are released into the atmosphere by flaring billions of cubic meters of natural gas, refining and volatilizing the spilt oil. Heat wave is generated by flaring travels several meters away from flare points, destroying crops, farm lands, exotic species that are hunters delight while causing extinction of fragile soil flora and fuana. The occurrence of acid rain in the region implies that the natural receptors of the area are the final recipient of land and atmospheric pollutants. In effect, the water needs and public health of the populace are greatly impeded. Nitric and sulphuric acids are regarded as the sole contributors of nitrate and sulphate in precipitation influenced by combusted hydrocarbons: fine nitrate aerosols that dissolve in rain water are conversion products of NO2 that arise from flaring, power plants and motor vehicles. Scientific evidence has shown that rain water and surface water quality in the Niger Delta can accentuate the poor health burden, and may be perpetuated through generations unborn. Diagnostic health risk assessment has revealed that drinking nitrate contaminated water may be associated with spontaneous miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, adult malignant lymphomas, soft tissues sarcomas, cancers and lesions with added health burden associated with heavy metals and other ions. All these pose public health emergency and may significantly entrench health risk for generations to come. The study aimed at determining the patterns of use of VCT for HIV among the youths in Anambra State of Nigeria was done using survey research design. Multi-stage, random sampling methods were used to select 400 youth and the instrument for data collection was questionnaire. The results show that majority of youths （85.1%） willingly accessed VCT and major reason was to check own HIV status. However only （35.9%） actually use VCT as recommended （every 6 months） thus indicating poor response to VCT services. Proper education of the public on the importance of VCT services should be provided to improve the response to VCT services.

Partial Purification and Characterization of Cellulase Produced by <i>Bacillus sphaericus</i>CE-3

Cellulase is an enzyme produced by fungi, bacteria, protozoa and termite, that hydrolyze cellulose. They are known for their diverse applications in industry and medicine. The aim of this study is to purify and investigate cellulolytic properties of cellulase enzyme produced by Bacillus sphaericus CE-3 isolated from refuse dump in nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nigeria. Enzyme was produced by submerged fermentation at 30°C for 30 h. The enzyme was purified to homogeneity by dialysis in 4M sucrose solution, ion-exchange chromatography on Q-Sepharose FF and by hydrophobic interaction chromatography on Phenyl Sepharose CL-4B. The relative molecular mass of the enzyme was estimated using SDS-Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Effects of temperature, pH and metals on enzyme activity and stability and the relative rate of hydrolysis of various substrates were also studied. The Purification fold for the enzyme was 7.8, with 66.4 μ/mg specific activity protein and overall yield of 35.8. The relative molecular mass range of the enzyme was estimated between 22.3 kDa - 26.3 kDa. The enzyme was optimally active at pH 9.0 and 40°C, stable at pH 9.0 and unusually retained over 90% activity between 50°C - 100°C after 30 min incubation. It was strongly activated by Mn2+ but inhibited by Ba2+, Co2+, Hg2+, Pb2+, Cu2+, Sr2+, Fe2+, Ca2+ and Zn2+. The cellulase displayed high catalytic activity with untreated sawdust, followed by carboxymethyl cellulose, while sodium hydroxide treated sawdust was the least hydrolyzed. Since the enzyme is thermo-stable, alkalophilic and could utilize natural wastes like sawdust as substrate, it is obvious that it would be of great use in textile, starch processing and pulp and paper industries.

Removal of Pigments from Palm Oil Using Activated Ibusa Kaolinite: Equilibrium, Kinetic and Thermodynamic Studies

The effectiveness of Ibusa kaolinite as an adsorbent in removing pigments from palm oil has been investigated in this study. Ibusa kaolinite was prepared as an adsorbent by treating it with hydrochloric acid. The surface area of the clay was found to increase with increase in acid dosage up to a maximum and then de-creased while its cation exchange capacity decreased with increase in acid dosage. The activated clay was used as an adsorbent for the removal of pigments from palm oil. The bleaching process was investigated by varying the clay dosage, acid concentration and temperature. The highest removal of pigments was recorded at 7 M HCl concentration, 4 g clay dosage and 100°C temperature, and about 97.4% pigments were removed in 80 minutes. Four isotherm models, three kinetic models, and the intra-particle diffusion model were applied to fit the experimental data. It was found that the equilibrium data were best represented by the Temkin isotherm model. The experimental data fitted well the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Diffusion studies indicated that in-tra-particle diffusion is not the sole rate-controlling factor. The bleaching pro-cess was found to be spontaneous and endothermic, with increasing random-ness of adsorbed species.

Enhancers and hindrances to doctor-nurse interdisciplinary collaborative practice in Nigeria

The purpose of this study was to identify factors that enhance and hinder interdisciplinary collaborative practice (ICP) among doctors and nurses at the nnamdi Azikiwe teaching hospital, Nnewi, southeast Nigeria. The study was a cross-sectional descriptive survey and the quantitative method of data collection was employed. The population was all doctors irrespective of area of specialty and all nurses employed and working in the hospital as at the time of study. Proportionate stratified and convenience sampling methods were used to select study participants according to their categories. Using validated structured questionnaire, data were collected from 110 doctors and 95 nurses in the teaching hospital on their perception on ICP and factors that enhance/hinder ICP. Data were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Specifically, frequencies, percentages, standard deviation and graphic presentation were used for descriptive analysis of scores while the unpaired t test of mean score using Graph Pad Prism, Version 5.30 was used to determine the influence of profession, gender, and years of experience on perception of ICP at 0.05 level of significance. The study found that both doctors and nurses have positive perception on ICP. Their years of experience have significant influence on their perception. Clear individual roles and good working relationships enhance ICP while giving priority to professional status rather than expertise was seen as a prominent hindrance to ICP. The study recommends collaborative continuing education for doctors and nurses to enhance ICP in patient care. In addition, the inclusion of interdisciplinary collaborative practice programmme into the curriculum of medical and nursing students (where it does not exist) would go a long way to strengthen ICP and decrease hindrances when they graduate.

Iodine Fortification Study of Some Common African Vegetables

Iodine Deficiency Diseases (IDDs) occupy important positions in the health problems of developing countries. Salt Iodisation has been the common approach to solving these problems. However, apart from the problems of lack of compliance by salt manufacturers, and inculturation of the consumers, health conditions aggravated by high salt intake by humans have become increasingly relevant. These problems can be eliminated if the commonly produced and consumed plants are fortified with Iodine. The prospects are in the inclusion of Iodine-containing compounds in the inorganic fertilizers used by farmers. In this study, Potassium Iodide and Potassium Iodate were used as inoculants. Five different concentrations—0.1 M, 0.2 M, 0.3 M, 0.4 M, and 0.5 M of Potassium Iodide and Potassium Iodate solutions were used to inoculate the soils on which the following edible African plants were planted: Murraya koenigii;Ocimum gratissimum;Cucurbita pepo;Solanum nigrum;Amaranthus hybridus and Abelmoschus esclentus, Corchorous olitoruis, Solanum lycopersicum, Zingiber officinale, Telfairia occidentalis, Talinium triangulare, Solanum melongena. Controls were also planted. After 14 days, alkaline dry ash method was used to determine the Iodine concentrations in the plants. The results showed that Murraya koenigii showed the highest absorption of Iodine 6.90 mg/kg at 0.3 M using KI, followed by Amaranthus hybridus 6.40 mg/kg at 0.1 M. Solanum nigrum, Ocimum gratissimum and Zingiber officinale also showed good absorption. Other plants except Murraya koenigii, Ocimum gratissimum, Solanum nigrum and Zingiber officinale showed very low tolerance to KI absorption. The result also showed that Telfairia occidentalis showed the highest absorption of iodine 8.20 mg/kg at 0.2 M of KIO3 followed by Cucurbita pepo 6.40 mg/kg at also 0.2 M of KIO3. Murraya koenigii, Ocimum gratissimum, Solanum nigrum, Zingiber officinale also showed good absorption of KIO3. Some of the plants were not able to tolerate the

Quality of Potable Water Available to the Residents of Anambra State, Nigeria

Public pipe-borne water system had collapsed in Anambra state of Nigeria, for over fifteen years, challenging the residents of the state to resort to alternative sources of potable water, notably, boreholes. It is imperative to continuously assess the quality of the water. In this work, two boreholes each in nineteen communities, one from Aguluzigbo, in three local government areas?(Anaocha, Awka-North, Awka-South) in the state were sampled, and tested for pH, Conductivity, Hardness, Total Suspended Solids, Lead, Arsenic, Cadmium, Bacteria and Yeast loads. The water samples were all soft and mostly acidic. While there were not much threats of yeast, the aerobic bacteria counts were above the acceptable limits. The Lead, Arsenic and Cadmium concentrations were above the tolerable limits in most communities in Anaocha and Awka-South. Arsenic, Lead, Cadmium were absent in all the samples in Awka-North except in four communities where Cadmium was present. Suspended solid contents were also high in all the Local Government Areas. Overall, the quality of the water consumed by the people in the selected population calls to question?of?the water and sanitation component of the public health system.
