Estimation of Ground Deformation in Landslide Prone Areas Using GPS: A Case Study of Bududa, Uganda

Landslides are a frequent phenomenon on mountain Elgon, particularly in Bududa district on the SW side of this extinct shield volcano. Landslides have led to the destruction of property and loss of life we, therefore, need to monitor them. Monitoring how landslides build-up makes it possible to timely evacuate people and build barriers to protect property against damage by landslides. Residents in Bududa have reported cracks developing in the ground and houses. These cracks continue to grow, suggesting a future catastrophic event. Such an event may resemble the 2010 landslide in Bududa, which killed approximately 450 people and destroyed much property. In order to mitigate the consequences of a new landslide as much as possible, we monitored ground motion in Bududa in eleven stations from June 2018 to June 2019. Six-hour session GPS observations were made, and deformation was determined over the observation period, June to September 2018, September to November 2018, November 2018 to February 2019 and February to June 2019. A congruency test was performed to determine how significant the deformation was. It appeared that the ground deformation differed largely at various monitored stations, ranging from 0.004 to 0.076 m, 0.001 to 0.067 m and 0 to 0.078 m in the East, North and vertical directions respectively. The values indicate that most slopes in the district are unstable, particularly in the wet seasons, which implies that future landslides pose a high risk for society.

BACKGROUND:Ectopic pancreas is defined as pancreatic tissue found outside its usual anatomical position,with no ductal or vascular communication with the native pancreas. We describe a case of ectopic pancreas of the small bowel and mesentery causing recurrent episodes of pancreatitis, initially suspected on computed tomography(CT)and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography(MRCP),and confirmed on histological review of the resection. METHODS:A 67-year-old woman presented with clinical symptoms and biochemical evidence of *** had similar episodes over the past 30 years with unrevealing investigations,and was concluded to have idiopathic pancreatitis. She underwent CT and MRCP,with findings suggestive of ectopic pancreas,a diagnosis confirmed on histology of the resection. RESULTS:MRCP identified a mass in the proximal small bowel mesentery isointense to the native pancreas,with a small duct draining into a proximal jejunal *** resected specimen consisted of normal parenchyma with lobulated acinar tissue with scattered islets of Langerhans,an occasional ductular structure,and admixed areas of adipose *** patient remained asymptomatic with normal biochemistry six months post-operatively. CONCLUSION:In an individual with abdominal pain,elevated serum amylase/lipase,but imaging findings of a normal native pancreas,ectopic pancreatitis should be considered,and can be evaluated by CT and MRCP.

Citrus huanglongbing（HLB） has become a major disease and limiting factor of production in citrus areas that have become infected. The destruction to the affected citrus industries has resulted in a tremendous increase to support research that in return has resulted in significant information on both applied and basic knowledge concerning this important disease to the global citrus industry. Recent research indicates the relationship between citrus and the causal agent of HLB is shaped by multiple elements, in which host defense responses may also play an important role. This review is intended to provide an overview of the importance of HLB to a wider audience of plant biologists. Recent advances on host-pathogen interactions, population genetics and vectoring of the causal agent are discussed.

盐胁迫通过干扰植物正常的生理生化过程使植物生长受损。植物在长期的适应过程中进化出了一系列抵御机制,其中细胞内渗透调节物的积累是植物面对逆境胁迫过程的常见反应。脯氨酸作为一种重要的渗透调节物,在植物应对盐胁迫的过程中发挥着重要的作用。黑果枸杞是一种多年生灌木,同时也是典型的盐生植物,多分布于干旱和半干旱地区,由于其具有抗旱和抗盐的特殊生理特性,是荒漠化防治和治理盐碱地的先锋树种。前期对不同种源黑果枸杞的耐盐性分析结果表明,随介质中NaCl浓度的增加,黑果枸杞叶片中积累的脯氨酸含量急剧增加,可见,脯氨酸的积累在黑果枸杞适应盐渍化环境的过程中发挥着重要的作用。但黑果枸杞体内积累的脯氨酸生理作用以及合成和降解的代谢分子调控机制尚不清楚。因此,本实验以黑果枸杞为材料,分析盐处理下的生物量、脯氨酸、抗氧化物酶活性、脯氨酸代谢关键酶等的变化,并分析脯氨酸关键酶合成基因的表达模式,以期为进一步研究黑果枸杞的脯氨酸分子调控机制提供依据。主要结果如下:1.黑果枸杞幼苗的生长受介质中NaCl浓度的影响,在50和150 mmol/L NaCl处理下,株高和根长维持稳定,各器官的生物量显著增加。黑果枸杞具有较强的耐盐性,一定浓度的NaCl可以促进其生长。2.随着盐浓度的增加,各组织中的可溶性蛋白含量、SOD和CAT活性先增加后下降,均在150 mmol/L NaCl处理下达到最大值,各组织中的脯氨酸含量持续增加,POD活性则随着NaCl浓度的增加持续下降。3.随着NaCl浓度的增加,脯氨酸代谢酶P5CS、P5CR和OAT的活性持续增加,Pro DH的活性则持续下降。脯氨酸含量和脯氨酸代谢酶之间呈现显著正相关。黑果枸杞体内的脯氨酸合成通路在低浓度NaCl处理下以Glu为主,高浓度NaCl处理下以Orn为主。4.从黑果枸杞的转录组数据库中共筛选到5个LrP5CS、1个LrP5CR、3个LrOAT、4个LrPro DH和2个LrP5CDH类似基因。它们在不同组织中均有表达,且受不同浓度NaCl不同程度的诱导。5.相较于250 mmol/L NaCl处理,基因LrP5CS2、LrP5CS3、LrP5CR1、LrOAT2、LrP5CDH2、LrPro DH2和LrPro DH3在50 mmol/L NaCl下表达量显著增加,分别增加了0.7、23.9、26.1、24.4、6.7、32.1和26.1倍。而与50 mmol/L NaCl相比,250 mmol/L NaCl下只有LrP5CS1和LrOAT1的表达量增高(9.4倍和1.7倍)。这意味着对黑果枸杞而言,50 mmol/L NaCl处理是多数与脯氨酸积累相关基因的最理想条件。综上所述,黑果枸杞通过生理指标、抗氧化物活性和脯氨酸代谢酶活性的变化,在盐胁迫过程中发挥抵御作用。

The development of aquaculture in Nigeria is constrained by the inadequate supply of high quality of fingerlings of African catfish(Clarias gariepinus).There are conflicting reports on the reproductive efficacy of Vernonia amygdalina when compared with the synthetic hormone Ovaprim(OV)and Pituitary Extract(PE)on *** histopathology of select organs in catfish treated with generic Ovaprim(OV),Pituitary Extract(CPE),and aqueous extract of Vernonia amygdalina(VAE)were *** female ***(average weight of 1 kg)wereevenly and randomly distributed to four *** in groups A,B,C,and D were injected intramuscularly with aqueous solutions of OV(0.5 mL/kg),PE(5 mg/kg),VAE(10 mg/kg),and distilled water(DW;0.5 ml),*** examinations of the ovary,liver,kidney,and spleen were carried *** revealed that OV-and PE-treated groups showed synchronous and synchronous ovarian development,vacuolar change of hepatocytes,thinning of hepatic cords,reduced renal haemopoietic compartments,tubular degeneration and necrosis,and decrease in splenic periarteriolar lymphoid sheaths(PALS).VAE-treated groups had asynchronous ovarian development with atretic ovarian follicles,widespread vacuolar change of hepatocytes,intact renal tubular and hemopoietic compartments,and preponderance of large and coalescing splenic *** conclude that VAE is an ineffective spawning agent,especially when compared with OV and PE,as VAE could not induce synchronous gonadal ***,VAE may have immunopotentiating,nephroprotective,and haemopoietic properties.
